The Mk 3 has a fully cored hull but it's not as problematic as the earlier C&C 36, 38 or 40. The major area of concern is the masr step. For reasons unknown C&C used cheap bondo under the heel fitting. This cracks and crushes over the years and allows the compromised substrate to compress. This is also manifested in external cracking where the keel stub roll joins the hull.
The 27 is a stout and tough little boat. I owned a 35 MK3 and they are really fine boats. Effortlessly fast and a very responsive boat. Also comfortable below decks.
Hi there, I just purchased a 1987 35-3, and I'm pretty sure the hull is pure fiberglass. The deck is balsa core though. All the research I've done suggests that all mark 3's are fiberglass hulls, though I haven't drilled into mine lol.
Rob Ball designs from the 33 Mk2 on (including the 35mk3, 37mk2, 38mk3 and 41) Have portions that are balsa cored. The 33 only had it in the panels forward of the keel is my understanding and the 35 I think is similarly built.
It would not be my choice for a crossing vessel. It is a well built boat but a little on the light side for long passages and potentially heavy seas that you would encounter. It really was built as a Coastal/Great Lakes club racer-cruiser. Could it do it safely, probably. Just wouldn't be my choice of the tool for the job.
Well done. Very informative for a potential 1st time buyer. You are my new Cap't Q! Blessings.

Such a beauty. I have a '76 C&C 27 Mk lll and I would love to upgrade at some point to exactly this boat.

I have a C&C 35 mk1 from 1972 and it is the only one to have a solid glass hull. The mk2 and 3 have balsa cored hulls unfortunately.
How well can this boat handle ocean crossing? It seems like a good sailboat but many say it’s only meant for coastal sailing. Thoughts?
