In high school when we played him my senior season in basketball(his junior season) he stole a pass, and I knew he had a break away and noone really made the hustle to catch him...I was expecting a lay-up, and he was all of 6'1"....he went up and did a Dominque tomahawk windmill poke dunk ...... and all I thought was, I hope he goes to UT to play...dam!!
Been watching the Vols since 1985 and Al is my favorite of all time. No way we win the Natty without him. You could argue he was on track to be an NFL Hall of Famer before that damn neck injury. Thanks for the video.
Totally agree, he would have been in the hall if he wouldn't have got hurt. Either way, what an incredible player and leader! Thank you for watching, Go Vols!
What a great tribute to the finest VFL! In 1994 I was a freshman playing football at Jackson Central Merry High School, Al’s senior season. His love for football, his tenacity on the field, his joy in demolishing the competition, and his leadership on and off the field was an incredible thing to witness and be a part of. Every time we walked out on a field everyone knew this cat was different! My family attended several games over his career at UT and he always had time to say hello to us and other fans afterward as he left the stadium. In 2021 I took my kids to their first UT game in Knoxville (the Vols destroyed South Carolina!) to see Al honored for his CFB Hall of Fame induction. I even wore my old JCM football jersey to the game to honor where he came from. Got to see him at the Vol Walk and during pregame. I love the photos of my kids with the greatest Tennessee Volunteer of all time! Thank you Al, and Go Cougars!
That is truly awesome! Thank you for sharing that story! I imagine watching him in high school was a show each and every time he stepped on the field haha Amazing player and better person. We are blessed to call him a Vol, GBO!
I've been waiting for another great video. Al had so many great games. If it had to pick one, it would be the Auburn game. Al Wilson was an elite player and a great man. Thank you for starting this channel.
I wasn't born until 2001 but my dad made it known how great Al Wilson and Leonard Little were. They were DAWGS, I used to watch their highlights before every one of my football games. They don't make em like that anymore and they don't let you play the game like they did. Al was a dangerous man.
They definitely don't make em like that any more! The crazy big shoulder pads just add to how intimidating he was, thank you for the watch, Go Big Orange!
Man isn't that the truth kids don't play with that passion much anymore but if can find a kid that does watch out Al was one of my all time favorite Tennessee players he played angry loved that
He went to school at JCM.. I’ll never forget Wilson and at that time Kelsey Williams from HUMBOLDT stayed in the Jackson Sun news paper every week for top RBs. I was a freshman at Humboldt and after every game 5th quarter highlights Wilson and Williams offensive show.. we knew he was a bad man…. I didn’t run track but rumor has it he could outrun everyone…I know bc we had two RBs Williams who was built like Wilson, he ran a 4.4… Maurice Jelks ran a 4.3… they had the pleasure of running against Wilson and the rest is history… TN has had a lot of good LBs but Wilson is special. He meant business
Thank you for sharing that story, that's so cool! I know his speed was one of his biggest gifts at LB, so I have no doubt he was torching people on the track haha he truly was a special player with passion that went unmatched! Again thank you for the story I love hearing stuff like that, and thank you for the support! GO VOLS!
@ Kelsey Williams was an athlete at all positions big physical with speed at Humboldt High School.. which he won mr. football his senior year and should have won it his junior year…. BUT AL Wilson was the name everybody knew out of Jackson and surrounding counties.. you didn’t want no smoke from him on the field… that look in his eyes…. Those were the days
My favorite Vol of all time !!! We couldn't have won the Natty in 98 without him ! Would have been a NFL hall of famer had he not got hurt. His leadership was unmatched
A true beast! and I didn't even know the kind of year you all were having that year that really sucks for yall and him. He still made an unmistakable mark on every program he touched! Go Vols!
I was at the 1997 Vandy game. It was a tough defensive struggle. Late in the second half, Wilson got hurt during a critical Vandy drive. As he was being helped off the field, he stopped and turned back towards his teammates, yelling and barking something at them. The crowd went absolutely nuts. The Vols won the game thanks in part to his leadership.
Al Wilson is the definition of 110% leave it all on the field. Whether a Vol, or a Denver Bronco. He once ran stride for stride with Marshall Faulk, and got the interception.
Arion is and will be an incredible player at UT, and I am sure he has some of that fire Al had! Although, I have yet to see anyone match that level of intensity game in and game out as the great Al Wilson. He was truly special! Thank you for the watch, GBO!
I was a kid watching Al play in high school!!! I wanted to play for JCM so bad!! #7 Al #20 Wesley Barlow(one the best rbs I ever witnessed play)… They could’ve been state champs if it wasn’t for Germantown/Lincoln Co.. good ol days!!!
Had a sandwich at subway on the strip 2 weeks after the natty with him. He had a tostios bombers leather natty jacket on. He was such a nice guy. He was driving a brand new cadilac esculade suv. He looked like a silver back gorilla. I am 6ft tall and i looked him right in the eye but he was massive with a gental heart but i am sure that changed inthe grid iron. Greatest d player with reggie white ,eric berry and derek barnett . Those are the best but al had more passion for tlhis team and the big orange then all those players combined.
Awesome story thank you for sharing! His passion for UT was unmatched and off the football field I am sure he is an even better human. Thanks for the watch, GBO!
@UT_Vol_Edits no problem another vol and close friend i still talk to today and my fav vol I worked with a twin city Mazda in 2000. Do you rmeber billy Ratliff? His nick name is worm lol. He is a great guy also. He saved our natty in razorback game with the most famous play in vols history called the stumble and fumble . Only game I cried in to this day I was so happy. Was leaving the stadium and heard neyland roar we ran back in to watch 13 hand offs to the chz Travis Henry run it down their throats for the win and go 10 and 0 and headed for the natty. What a game and a great guy. He sales painting of that play on his Facebook if you want one. Just ask for the stumble and fumbel and the size painting you want. It's awesome.
That is awesome! I do remember Billy Ratliff and how could you forget the Arkansas fumble that saved our 98 championship run! I will have to check out that painting! I have plenty of Vols legends to make videos on but I would love to do a video over him or that play/game or even that just championship run season I think would be really cool, would that be something you would watch?
What is your favorite Al Wilson game/moment?
