When the Chinese first came over to the US, numerous Chinatowns were built across Northern California, serving as important Chinese communities that offered protection, entertainment, and survival for the early Chinese pioneers. Marysville's Chinatown became one of the largest and liveliest Chinatown in all of California due to its proximity to the Northern Gold Mines (Colfax, Grass Valley, etc.), and also the accessibility to reach Marysville from San Francisco.
During its golden days, Marysville's Chinatown had schools, shops, brothels, gambling dens, temples, etc. The streets were filled with activities, and Chinatown celebrated many festivals significant to the Chinese culture. One of the most important characteristics of Marysville Chinatown was that it was able to avoid arson and racist violence, which also drew Chinese refuges from nearby Chinatowns such as Chico and Oroville, which were both destroyed by racist MFs. However, even a prominent Chinatown like Marysville couldn't withstand the depletion of gold, which forced many folks to move out in search of new opportunities.
What is left of Maryville's Chinatown today? Join me as we explore the Last Chinatown of California's Gold Country!

Correction @ 23:50 - Marysville was "Sam Fow" (Third Chinatown), but still had a bigger population than Sacramento during its peak

My dad and his 3 brothers went to that Chinese school when they were young. They got out of American grade school and went there until the evening. There is also a memorial outside of the temple just passed the Silver Dollar. It’s dedicated to my grandmother. Her and my grandfather were very prominent people in the Chinese community.

Who was your dad? I might have known him since my brothers and I attended until it for closed down around 1960 by my mother Mary Wong Hai Yee, its last principal. When I started, it had around 15 students. The class exercise books in brush stroked character are now stored in storage. So our Chinese calligraphy has been preserved to this day!

I had the privilege and opportunity last year (or year before) to tour the inside of the Oroville Chinese Temple, and it was fantastic!! I also made a video about it, and thanks for mentioning the rock fences in Chico as I had no idea!

    • @irishgrl
      @irishgrl 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@jacks_off_to the rock walls/fences in Chico are vanishing as vacant land is being taken for development, but the best remnants can be seen off of Bruce Road.
Also could you provide the link for your Oroville Chinese Temple video? I didn’t find it when I went to your site 😩

      Thank you!
I also did some digging for you & found this news clip about a section of an historic section of wall that was removed when they widened Bruce Road when they built the new courthouse…I remember that, it was heartbreaking…at any rate, there are still more wall sections along Bruce Road closer to highway 32 if you ever come back up this way. I’m sure there’s info about them in a Chico Museum & definitely you can find info in the library on the Chico State University campus picture collections 👍
Also watching more of your videos, I answered my own question about where you grew up…CALLED IT!!!
Ps I love your earthy natural & humorous style. Don’t change. Just don’t. You are perfect just as you are!
PPS: what happened to my link? TH-cam strikes again? If you want you can search for rock walls of Chico CA & there’s a 2 minute video on the removal of a historic section.

Very informative! Hope you’ll go back March 1-2, 2025 for its annual Bomb Day celebrating Book Kai Festival. Your tour brought back many old memories. I attended that Chinese school from 1954 until it closed down around 1960 by my mother Mary Wong Hai Yee, its last principal. When I started, it had around 15 students - very vibrant and active! The class exercise books in ink brush stroked characters are now stored in storage. So our Chinese calligraphy has been preserved to this day. I am surprised the building has been shuttered to this day. Hope you continue to tour and explore Chinese Chinatowns and historic places!

[If your interested] I recommend watching the Marysville Bomb Day(I believe that's what its called) It's also on here on yt.
6:30 I d k what's it called. But its a good fortune ring competition. It starts with a ring place on a fire cracker that is also place on top of a wooden log. When it explodes. The competitors would try to catch the good luck ring. This is part of the celebration of the bok kai parade.
    9:34 forgot about them cats.

@@jacks_off_to The closest physical address is 707 Main St. Colusa, CA. You will also see a plaque (745 Main St) about the Colusa Chinatown.
In Colusa there was an infamous lynching incident to a Chinese ethic resident Hong Di back in 1887 (Hong Di was accused of shoting and killing his employer).
