The Rats in the Walls title is just too real a nightmare. In my old house, there were so many mice in the walls. Scampering little devils. But in all seriousness, I haven't heard of this tale by Lovecraft. It sounds really interesting, with the English family history and rats in solid walls. So creepy!
I first encountered it on an audio tape read by David McCallum and was shocked at the ending. I would argue that it is Mythos based - it does mention Nyarlathotep, after all.
This story is so creepy! Great reading and discussion, as always. I'm impressed you still have a copy of the old book you originally read the story in, even though you have newer more amazing-looking versions of Lovecraft books.
Wish I owned that edition of Great Tales of Terror and the Supernatural! Think I’ll look for it! Oh, after I’m done with my read-50-before-I-buy challenge, of course!
Great story. Stuck in my head on first reading it and has echoed throughout the years, not just because of the horrors surrounding the De La Poer (of the power) family but also the ideas surrounding the priory itself, as if the very architecture had some kind of power. This is a story where HPL managed to display some interesting ideas and some absolute horror simultaneously. Tough to ford my way through his prose here, but in a way that's a good thing as rereading it always uncovers something I might not have noticed before.
This sounds sufficiently creepy. Although it’s hard to tell if that’s primarily due to the story itself, or owes more to your spine-tingling dramatic performance. 😱
Awesome review! I didn't discover Lovecraft until my late teens (unfortunately), but this story, I think, has one of the best climaxes/twist endings of all of his stories. The build-up was a bit slow from what I remember but the pay off at the end was more than worth it! Such a great story! (I'm 25 now, and his stories still manage to unsettle me or make me feel uneasy, there's not many modern books that can do that as I'm pretty desensitized by this point lol)
I don't even have 2 say anything. A Great Story....Reviewed , and Read by a Great Book tuber. 👍😁👍 Nice Review, Great Reading, and Great Video. Also You probably could do Audio books. I've only listened 2 one in my whole life , on a long driving trip....So...I'm not one 2 judge, but it sounds good, and entertaining while you read. 👍😁👍
I went straight to my Lovecraft book to see how close I am to getting to this one 😆 it's a little way off yet! The name made me think of the Bram Stoker story called The Judges House
Have you ever listened to HPPodcraft? Your readings remind me of their excerpt readings. If you somehow haven't, you should! They have wonderful conversation/analysis.
Ah, yes! Another story featured in the early pages of The Dunwich Horror and other Stories, so it was one of the first Lovecraft pieces I read, too. I was a little younger than you were. This one definitely did something to me, and Colour out of Space was not far off, which I think is kind of the one that really hooked me in for good. Great points about Lovecraft and racism in general. Different time for sure -- that n-word was even used by people who were not especially racist, not really realising or thinking it was racist/had very racist connotations. It seems insensitive when we think about that now. I must admit that when i first read this as a kid I just thought the cat's name was funny. Poor cat. While the descent into madness and dengeneracy of the protagonist is horrifying, the very end, with teh postscript (if I remember right) where he says he's been locked up; they took his cat way from him ... that always struck me as being sad. True horror always involves bad stuff happening to peopel who really don't deserve it.
This story was the first Lovecraft story I ever rea and my favorite
I was looking forward to you covering this story and I was not disappointed! One of his most memorable tales.
This year is the centenary of this story’s publication. We will now be going through the centenary of the major HPL stories for the next 13 years.
Gives new meaning to the term 'renovators delight' ! Sounds like a great (creepy) story.

Yes, I really poured on the Melodrama for this one!

No wonder you're so weird and entertaining. Thank God for Lovecraft. 😁
You should have been an audiobook narrator
Thanks! I m sure Audible will be calling any minute!

I really look forward to seeing your video on this someday.

I have listened to that! I agree, I really enjoyed their discussions on Lovecraft’s work!

Lovecraft sure had that bad stuff happening to innocent people down! I remember also feeling bad about the cat!
Amazing review, man! Undoubtedly, Lovecraft is one of the greatest! Congrats for your channel and keep up with the good work ;)
Thanks! I really appreciate your support!
