Both songs were dope, with dope beats and hooks and bars, but "Ether" slightly edged it on the beat and hook (while "Takeover" had the better lyrics), which usually matters most to the average person. Plus, Nas was definitely the underdog in that one, and people always love an underdog story.

One of my favorite diss songs of all time was “2nd Round KO” by Canibus (a much better song than “The ripper strikes back” or whatever LL’s song was called), but he definitely lost the battle to LL. Push was a genius with how he did it. He hit drake up over several songs on an album, and a very dope album at that. But, more importantly, he exposed real dirt on Drake, possibly the worst ever in a rap beef (it’s either that or Jay’s “Carmen” diss). This was some deeply personal, hurtful shit. Further, it probably made Drake wonder what else Push knew about him.

I agree with you - astute observation about there being a permanent dark cloud over Drake's career. I think even if fans say they don't care in that moment, all they need is the right context in order to care all of a sudden. You have to understand that fans are fanatics and by that very definition not very rational. They'll conveniently "not care" because they're fans. They're predisposed to favoritism and they'll find ways to rationalize their favoritism of one artist over another. Even if Meek had dropped the most awesome diss in the history of mankind Drake's fans would've still rationalized the possibility of him not writing his own songs as secondary to the fact that "he drops great records and that's all that matters at the end of the day." Now cue in Kendrick. If Kendrick had been the one to make that accusation and enter the battle, I guarantee you more fans in general and Drake fans in particular would've been willing to entertain the idea that not writing your own bars is sacrilege in hip hop. Kendrick has the star power and emotioal entrenchment (ability to make fans irrational) to sway that point of view back to the traditional point of view of "write your own shit or else you ain't real". Add that to the fact that Drake hasn't exactly been dropping anything unpredictable or earth shattering and you have yourself a situation where that privilege being granted Drake particularly now that Kendrick has dropped is being withdrawn though not really spoken about. In the end, he never had a ghost writer (Quentin was always credited) and once you examine the reference tracks, Drake rewritten most of what Quentin spit. Most of his Pop fan base know nothing about Hip-hop culture, Drake wants his pen compared to rap greatest like his idols. The ghostwriting already killed all that, no amount of commercial success can't remove the legacy stains. Only Kendrick Lamar and J. War Pain was better than Back to Back in my opinion. It was direct and filled with aggression and bars. Meek's Summer Sixteen freestyle was incredible as well.

I didn't really notice until I watched this, that after the whole "drake v meek" thing and the metaphorical body bag meek had been put into by drake, I was still a fan of Meeks work and still bought DC4 and continue to check for releases by him. - What did he rebuttal? If I remember correctly, he didn't rebuttal anything Jay said (mainly, that Nas didn't own his own publishing to "Illmatic", that Jay boned Nas' baby mama, and that Nas was basically fronting, rapping about the life his brother Jungle lived)
- Did he pull Jay's card? No.
So why did Nas win the battle? He just had a better song (according to the public; I prefer "Takeover"). Same as Drake. If you have the better songs, you win, bottom line.

Not to mention, when Hot 97 did the contest on the radio, they made it "Super Ugly" vs "Ether", which is ridiculous, cuz "Super Ugly" was just a freestyle-type, mixtape record, whereas "Ether" was the "official" diss. It should've been "Takeover" vs "Ether".
That said, I wouldn't be surprised if "Ether" still edged it. Both songs were dope, with dope beats and hooks and bars, but "Ether" slightly edged it on the beat and hook (while "Takeover" had the better lyrics), which usually matters most to the average person. Plus, Nas was definitely the underdog in that one, and people always love an underdog story.

One of my favorite diss songs of all time was “2nd Round KO” by Canibus (a much better song than “The ripper strikes back” or whatever LL’s song was called), but he definitely lost the battle to LL.
Push was a genius with how he did it. He hit drake up over several songs on an album, and a very dope album at that. But, more importantly, he exposed real dirt on Drake, possibly the worst ever in a rap beef (it’s either that or Jay’s “Carmen” diss). This was some deeply personal, hurtful shit. Further, it probably made Drake wonder what else Push knew about him.
In the long run, Meek won. He forever tarnished Drake's legacy by exposing him as a fraud.

I agree with you - astute observation about there being a permanent dark cloud over Drake's career. I think even if fans say they don't care in that moment, all they need is the right context in order to care all of a sudden.
You have to understand that fans are fanatics and by that very definition not very rational. They'll conveniently "not care" because they're fans. They're predisposed to favoritism and they'll find ways to rationalize their favoritism of one artist over another. Even if Meek had dropped the most awesome diss in the history of mankind Drake's fans would've still rationalized the possibility of him not writing his own songs as secondary to the fact that "he drops great records and that's all that matters at the end of the day."
Now cue in Kendrick. If Kendrick had been the one to make that accusation and enter the battle, I guarantee you more fans in general and Drake fans in particular would've been willing to entertain the idea that not writing your own bars is sacrilege in hip hop. Kendrick has the star power and emotioal entrenchment (ability to make fans irrational) to sway that point of view back to the traditional point of view of "write your own shit or else you ain't real". Add that to the fact that Drake hasn't exactly been dropping anything unpredictable or earth shattering and you have yourself a situation where that privilege being granted Drake particularly now that Kendrick has dropped is being withdrawn though not really spoken about.

I didn't really notice until I watched this, that after the whole "drake v meek" thing and the metaphorical body bag meek had been put into by drake, I was still a fan of Meeks work and still bought DC4 and continue to check for releases by him. But on the other hand I don't know how I feel about Drake's work anymore. I was a big fan but now that his status as a great rapper has been tainted I find it hard to respect him as a "true artist".

Meek lost the war too, there are 2 Meeks Mills, the Meek before Back to back and the meek after Back to back. Meek proved to everyone he could not stand head to head with "Heartbreak Drake." Meek became a meme and it is hard to take him serious to this day. Sure, Meek Mill released a good album afterwards but just like Drake, Meek Mill's image was damaged as well, rapping about his Rollie in a diss track. Meek Mill being from the slums of Philly (where they pride themselves with great lyrical rappers) and Drake being the non-street kid who grew up with a middle class family and was often labeled as an emotional rapper, it is embarrassing that Meek would lose to Drake.

Drake is the greatest artist of this day, apart from lil Wayne who will always be the goat for my generation. But drake can’t go down in the top tier of rappers, there will always be an asterisk beside his name in my book. Meek may have lost the battle but he won the war by shedding light on Drake’s ghost writing situation. It was an amazing time for hip hop though and I’m glad I was able to see it.

Bro, “proved”? Look at the credits on any song and it will clearly list any and all writers. I don’t see how people look down on having co-writers on songs. Two heads are better than one. Drake can obviously rap. Please look at the credits on the biggest rap songs and you’ll see multiple writers. Who cares? The only people who act like having collaborators is a negative are people who live in the idea of (rap) music instead of the reality of it. Collaboration happens. Big deal.
