Hi Mel! Thanx for sharing. You can also use cheap large white kids chalk and grind or smash it up for the gesso/paste instead of baby powder for a thicker grittier texture. Thanx again good job! 👍😉
Mod podge can be made too. It's glue all and distilled water. I don't remember what the measurements were. Also I've used baby powder, baking Soda, and plaster of Paris and even corn starch. DIY gesso I've heard is a mixture of acrylic paint titanium, glue all (PVA) and one of the above powders (baby, corn starch, plaster of Paris and baking soda. One or the other. TFS! I have tried the baby powder and didn't quite like the smell. I will make a batch using plaster of Paris since the hubby bought me a huge run of it. Thanks again
corn starch so you don't have the baby powder scent. I use joint compound. Spreading it thin and scrapping it off makes clean up easier and gives the same over all texture and its dries faster.
I didn't have any baby powder, so I used baking soda.....it came out great.However, I used almost a full cup of BS, 1/4 cup gesso, and 1/8 cup mod podge.... put some in small container, used metallic blue paint, which altered the consistency a little. Still, very easy to use. Now, I have to buy more stencils.....only have 2. lol
That was awesome that you shared your journey!! I have a few different "recepies" for texture/modeling paste on my channel. Don't limit yourself to a "recepie", Texture paste as you found out is soo easy to make & when you do it yourself you can swap out ingrediants for different results. I swap readily between baby powder, cornstarch & baking soda. Some times I use sand, coffee & any number of other thing depending on what sort of result I'll need.
@Cooking With K make smaller batches as experiments and record the ratios that way you can know exactly what you want to make and how to make it when you go in for that large batch ;-)
Basically you can replace the baby powder with corn starch and replace the gesso with a mix of white acrylics (or any color), glue or mod podge and more baby powder... so basically - replacing it with white acrylics is bound to be OK, because you have the other ingredients... The acrylics is just for color, in gesso, too. So, you add more baby powder or corn starch until you have a desired consistency... If you think what you have in, you can understand that recipes are pretty much "something like that". Most mixtures work. If doesn't cover enough, add acrylics, if it's too runny, add baby powder, if it's too thick, add mod podge or white glue.
What's wild is that the last component is supposed to be "Gesso". A recipe for DIY Gesso is 1/4 cup talcum powder 1 tablespoon white glue , 1 tablespoon white paint ! Same stuff! It's a paste fractal.
Gesso is a 'ground' that is used on a canvas..Then its dried and sanded if needed before doing acrylic or oil paintings.. I am wondering if this home-made texture would be ok for doing impasto paintings but havent seen anyone that does impasto reviewing it...I am wondering if you laid it on thick with the pallet knife how would it be when it is dry?? Would it be stiff peaks, would it be dusty or crumble, ect?? I just spent $18 for Liquitex heavy body gel and wondering if this would work similar..

Spackling compound from hardware store ... is really the best and it is cheap. You use for wall texrure.

Can I make texture paste by only mixing plaster of Paris and glue? Is it okay to not add any colour?

You could use a paint stick to stir your mixture.
Mel, Gesso is a primer traditionally used to give artist's canvases a smooth surface for painting.

Mine keeps cracking when it has dried. What do I need to adjust/add to it to fix that problem?
add a bit of oil to the paste, 1 or so tsp.
