Hi folks, in this video I replace the front brake pads of my BMW R1250R - this process should be broadly similar to other large capacity BMW bikes wearing Hayes brakes from the last three years or so.
The are a number of Brembo pad replacement videos on TH-cam not many (if any!) on the Hayes caliper. If you have a biking friend with these calipers please point them in the direction of this video 👍
I had a lot of help and advice from Carl from Just The Way It Is, cheers Carl!

I won't pretend that this video is the most thorough or meticulous brake pad replacement video but I don't think I made any obvious howlers! Of course there are lots of opinions when it comes to common stuff like this so if you have one drop it in the comments 😁
There are various approaches when it comes to bedding in brake pads - Dave Moss demonstrates one of the more popular methods below.

By the way, yes I am aware of the R1250GS recall of leaking Hayes calipers from a couple of years ago.

I forgot to mention which pads I bought! With Carls advice ringing in my ears I ordered a set of Brembo 07GR90SA fronts - these are a sportier pad compound compared to OEM and since I take my bike on track days I thought they would be worth trying.

I thought it was a great Video , it really helped me replace the pads especially as there are no other videos out there for the Hayes calipers, it was a very helpful insight into whats required

Hi Rikky, excellent episode, and a lovely “how-to” guide for Hayes caliper users. Its nice to see you have more space in your garage now and that will make your life much easier as your motorbike collection grows… smile.

Thanks Carl and I hope I didn't give you too big a scare with my phone number gag 😂

Thanks for the video. I have Hayes calipers on my 2020 S1000RR and this will be very helpful when I change to SR pads shortly. The only comment I would make is that putting silicone grease around the pistons is probably not the best idea. It will just attract dirt and debris which will be drawn into the rubber seals as the pistons move in and out of the calipers. The only place you might use it is on the sliding pin, but even there, many people say to avoid it altogether.

Thank you for your comments and I hope the video helps! With regards to the silicone grease, I followed the advice of a experienced motor vehicle technician with several decades in the trade - that's how he does it and the reasoning behind it seems sound to me, however I do take your points that it may be best to avoid it altogether as one less potential cause of trouble down the line. As with many things in life there is a difference in opinion here, even between experts!

@@RikkyTang True. It’s hard to know who to listen to. I just finished reading a BMW technical bulletin covering this topic and they don’t use any grease or silicone.

Thank Rikky. You missed installing the pads into the caliper. You went to wash hands and then mounted the caliper. If I followed exactly I would have pumped the brake lever without the pads. That could be very interesting.

That's exactly what I thought. I was watching to see the pads being installed....which didn't happen unfortunately. Anyway, I installed pads on the front of my own bike last week and it was really dead easy. Brembo pads, definitely improved the power of the brakes.

Hi Rikky, what was the mileage on your R 1250 R when you changed the OEM front pads??...thx!

Hi Regis I',m sorry that I did not reply earlier. I think I was at 8000 miles (12900km approx.), but with my track days I'm sure that my brake pad wear is higher than normal for this bike.

Thanks for the vid. Not sure why you lube the pistons. Aren't they lubed by brake fluid. Other advice around sometimes says NEVER lube the pistons themselves. I'm now unsure.

Well intentioned, but really not clear explanation, confusing photography, not clearly showing. I’m now more confused than I started.
