Gago in the house! literally. Fab video mate. I cannot believe they blended yattarna, what a treat. Hate it or love it, you can't fault penfolds for innovation or craftsmanship at the highest level. Awesome
Love Penfolds! From CA (Napa Area) so am accustomed to Napa, Sonoma, Red Hills and Paso wines but stumbling upon your channel is breath of fresh air! Nice to see there is whole world of wines I’ve never experienced! Thank you for this channel!
Love Erin’s videos and Penfolds so this is killer. I buy Yattarna regularly. It is getting better and better and I think great value for money given the quality of what it is. Who doesn’t love Grange but it must be rationed given the cost. I also really like St Henri , Bin 707 and bin 798. At my daughters Christening we had Bin 707 for the after party and it was a huge hit.
Interesting solera experiment. You do find a handful of producers who have been doing that already. Payten & Jones with their Yarra Sangiovese (5 vintages I think) and Eloquesta done it with his Shiraz too. Tasty experiments in red land :)
Killing it. Both Ez and the team at Penfolds Exciting time to be into wine in Australia Practice your wine words in front of the mirror? If you have ever listened to the 12th man where Richie is practicing his call whilst in the shower in the morning, I guess it’s kind of the same with warming up for a day full of wine descriptives with PG Great Would love a Nadler rd/ Powell and son video and if you can get Dave or Michael S on would be awesome
Dave is great, and very talented winemaker. The descriptors come with the wines - I don’t plan them, no warm up required. Richie Benaud was one of the worlds great commentators (regardless of the fact that cricket is one of the world greatest codes)
Excellent. Read the reviews on Parker and the video reinforces much of it. Wow. Pushing the affordability ceiling that grange is. I wonder if they will start releasing grange with 10 rather than 4 years on it
No way to know. You shouldn’t be drinking them before ten years anyway - you can, but it’s missing the point. $1000 takes it well out of reach of most, many people I know have stories of buying them for $10, $20… all relative but it’s a huge climb in price. The one thing I can say is, having tasted them back to the early 60’s, they age very slowly, and gracefully. What it does emphasise, is the value of some of the other wines in the collection - Magill, RWT and St Henri for example. Glad you read the full write ups on Parker - thanks!
, Erin I am officially jealous of your job . Great post and info . Really different information on penfolds. 2018 supposed to be the best year in last ten years in barossa. I'm wondering if you rated the 18 in front of the 16 grange personally as happen to have one 16.
Great video again Erin and I have a follow up question to one I sent you a while ago. I am a huge fan of the 2018 Standish Shiraz and wonder how you rate it beside the 18' Grange now you've had both? I haven't bought a Grange for about 10 years and was wondering if the 18' was the vintage to jump back in. Thanks David
I don't know Erin, I have just returned to Oz from working in London and LA. Whilst abroad and being into rare books, rare coins, as well as beautiful wines... you really do get to meet the most wonderful and most interesting people. When mentioning you love wine the conversation immediately turns to Penfolds... "Oh you are an Aussie, what do you think about Penfolds... I love Penfolds." "Mmmm... have you tried Henschke?" I say. All you hear is crickets... Look... I love Penfold's, always have. I buy cases and cases every year... I believe the quality has dropped. The art has gone. I am of the firm opinion Peter is a brilliant manager, brilliant leader, even a fantastic wine maker with a vision... He is also a marketing expert. I cannot help but feel that Penfold's has turned into an overly commercialised global brand. The accountants and board room now rule and the true wine making craft and focus on utmost quality has been lost to mass production of continual new and exciting product marketed to an enormous audience and demographic... This year and last I have bought far more cases of Henschke then Penfolds...
I think that the marketing of Penfolds is strong, and perhaps never more so than in the past decade. However, marketing only gets a brand so far - it gets the wines bought the first time, but it doesn't get them bought a second time. Having just spent the last couple of days tasting premium Penfolds wines back to the great Bin 60A (1962) it's clear to me that the 'story' is only one part of these wines, the actual fabric of the wines themselves is something else entirely. Stylistically, the divide between brands like Penfolds and Henschke couldn't be wider, and perhaps your shift in recent years has something to do with a change in values around single vineyard/family owned VS multi-regional blends. I'm not saying either is better than the other, they each have merit. I would also add, that while we may say that the Penfolds brand is in hyperdrive currently with new ideas and projects (Champagne, Bordeaux, Napa, China, South Africa and more) it's always been the way, the MO for this brand, ever since its early, family owned days. Wine needs innovation to continually evolve and grow, so while I am not necessarily the biggest fan of every project going currently, I am a fervent supporter of growth and development. And that is what is happening here. At the end of the day... you are absolutely not wrong in your opinions, I just hope I can add a little to the web of thoughts. Thanks for watching, and contributing!
Great video Erin! Always a pleasure listening to what Peter Gago has to say about the new Penfolds release
Gago in the house!

Agree completely. And in the case of the blended Yattarna - I defy any Chardonnay lover not to love it

A pleasure to watch
Glad you enjoyed 🙏
Great info Erin 👌👌👌
A thundering Baritone ....love it.
It’s true!
Great video!
You were both great

I’ve certainly had plenty of red multi vintage wines, but I’ve never had a Chardonnay multi vintage wine that wasnt a champagne
Booked in for the dinner at Lamont’s to try some of these, can’t wait
Great!

I don’t deserve this video so excited ! Haha

Both great wines! I prefer the 2018. Stylistic call there

I’m a massive fan of the Standish, massive. I gave the two wines very similar points. I’d buy ten of the 2018 Standish
@@erinlarkin thanks mate.
