  • Shelly Pennefather was a top-five basketball recruit coming out of high school. She grew up with a strong religious background and that played major role in her college selection as she chose Villanova University. Pennefather holds the all-time scoring record for men and women at Villanova. Pennefather moved to Japan after college to play professional basketball. She made a deal with God that if she could pull her team out of last place and into the playoffs, she would vow to owe her time and postseason bonus to Mother Teresa's convent in Pennsylvania. Her team made the playoffs and she later gave up her basketball career to join the monastery, a life where she can only embrace her family once every 25 years.

For those who know the family - always a tremendous story. I was in Seton high school when this happened - her two brothers (Mr "P" and Mr Pennefather) and her dad(Colonel P) were some of my teachers. She has a better long term plan than most people. This story is always an inspiration, different, but the same, as
Tom Vander Woude of Nokesville (another basketball familly)
Both families are close to each other, and their children went through the same school as well.

if God would have told me that I would have a daughter, who would lock herself up for 25 years and then she would be permitted to give one hug and then most likely never again in this life...I would have worn a condom (I am trying to be as sensitive as I can, as I am used to being attacked for my religious beliefs).
I have no idea what was going on with the Poor Clares in the 1200s, but it certainly doesn't appear to be biblical Christianity to me.

@@d.levichestnutwoodboillot8022 Children are like flowers - you can never have too many flowers in the world. I - like any loving parent in the world - could never make that statement to my (five year old) daughter. My sadness of never seeing my daughter would pale in comparison to my love for her - I am not selfish to think my feelings should be more important than my child's life(or her ultimate happiness).

@@dansummers39 true, flowers are wonderful. And it is not her motivation to show love for God that I have a problem with. I think it is a beautiful thing to want to show love for God. But I don't agree with the method. I do not believe it is of God. These are rules made up by St Clare/St Francis or somebody else. These rules are not of God. Can you imagine Jesus not touching people because that is His way of showing love towards the Father? Who is it helping when she locks herself up like that? Who is it helping when she can't hug family? Does it make Jesus smile? Can you imagine Jesus, who raised Jairus' daughter from the dead, after he performed that miracle, can you imagine Jesus saying "hey, i know that you are excited that your daughter is alive and all, but don't embrace her or hug her..., it's for the happiness of the child and mother"? Life is hard enough. Is it not possible to give your life to God while working a 9-5 with 5 kids? Are we excluded from giving our life to God?

@@d.levichestnutwoodboillot8022 (Thanks for a good dialogue!)
Of the different "disciplines" of dedicating ones life to God - religious cloistered life is only one. "Married life" and "Single life" are also equally legitimate callings. Sister Mary chose a particular discipline based on what she felt called to do.
Using the analogy of "diets", which are also a form of "discipline":
Some diets are more strict than others, and allow an adherent to focus on specific things that make them a better person: no fatty foods, no salt, or smaller portions. What is best for one person may not be best for another. No matter what the diet is, it involves a sacrifice of ones self for overall betterment - and this will certainly include pain and suffering. (I have a sweet tooth, and saying "no to cookies" is a good thing :( ).
Whether you are a parent who sacrifices themselves daily for their children, a single person who may have a wider audience for their good, or a religious (some of whom took a vow of perpetual cloister), life is full of self-sacrifice. Sacrificing ourselves for something better is something we are called to do from our very human nature.

    • @TheMarymicheal
      @TheMarymicheal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@d.levichestnutwoodboillot8022 why it has to be always biblical?
If we take in the sense of bible, it was same with firstborns of Jews.
      How about mother Mary ?
Hasn't she felt the same, her son is not anymore of hers, that one day he will no longer be available?
She renounced and sacrificed her life for the next life to spend with God.
What else is more pleasing than this.
      Not all get such privilege.

I can think of far worst choices being made by people in our society. There are multiple shootings every month in the U.S., drug dealing is rampant, sex trafficking is now "off the charts". I see it this way: Get your own house in order, prepare for your Judgement Day, and never mind what anyone else is doing with their life!!
