Those ghostwriters get paid… a nice amount of money it’s called the music business
Its why I can’t say HipHop is Dead, like many claim. Perception / Optics makes you think garbage sell. But Kendrick, Schoolboy Q, Tyler the Creator, Pusha T, J Cole… all these guys make, “Real HipHop” and outsell MOST of the Pop Rappers and Lil Lils without pop or club singles. All these guys are capable of dropping a top album. Then there’s Lil Wayne, Common, Jay, Nas….. Kendrick routinely breaks Drakes records. Especially the album and tour records. J Cole can go platinum with NO features. Tyler and Pusha both dropped #1 albums in 2022. Schoolboy Q.. Oxymoron, Blank Face and Crash Talk dropped #1, 2 and 3 on Billboard and all dropped #1 on the Rap/R&B charts. Lyrical, boombap type rap has always been viable. I think Freddie Gibbs does pretty well, also. Benny the Butcher would be up there too if he stayed with Griselda. His albums were actually MORE popular Before he went to Def Jam. YES dope emcees are less in number but rare talent is just that…. rare.
Facts & say this to a casual listener & they’ll say “Nobody listens to them”, all because they don’t hear the music played in the clubs or on the radio heavy , like the garbage that’s in constant rotation.
I use Tyler as an example all the time. Dude be killin it , Albums , Merch , Concerts etc. extremely successful all around , with barely any radio play or play in the club.

I hate the ghostwriter conversation about Drake. The writers are credited on the song so they aren’t ghosts. Because someone uses a ghostwriter/co-writer doesn’t mean they don’t write songs. Most rappers take ideas/lines from studio councils, producers, etc. He’s literally written for Kanye West, a man who said “I don’t have writers” on a wax. People misrepresent ghostwriting, think of it as an all or nothing practice, etc.

He’s one of the few artists in all of music still moving six figures in the first week. And Kendrick’s singles are, for the most part, catchy and radio friendly. He ain’t some underground backpacker. Rap is a music genre like any other. Ghost writing been in it since day one...in every genre...and sometimes just flat out thiervery went get into the music it self across all genres
The public would be shocked at what songs werent written by their faves.
No... no they wouldn't. Or shouldn't. There's a general knowledge of songwriting being sourced out. I remember in the 90s getting my hands on CD jackets and reading who wrote what. Especially groups! You would see sometimes how a certain member was responsible for the songs you liked, or how another artist altogether wrote a whole song.
Bruno Mars wrote one of my favorite songs on a Adele album. Growing up in Detroit, our boy Stevie was not the only other artist writing for big performers. It's a part of the singing world.
Rap... hip hop, is a branch of poetry. Real MCs know this. Hell, even Chris Brown knows this. He talks about the line between singing and bars, and that he has never spit a bar he didn't write himself. Where would he, one of the greatest music stars out there, get the idea that this was necessary? That it mattered? Not from thin air....

If LL openly gave credit to whoever wrote that when it was released, I think it's tasteless, but his integrity as a rapper would be sustained.
