  • The Northern Cardinal is a common bird and has a very beautiful call. The red bird, as some call it, is very recognizable.

Dude same, I have one in my backyard that sounds like a loud alarm clock. I had no idea what kinda bird it was until I saw it yesterday. I had no idea a Cardinal could make that loud and annoying of a call lol

The first call is the one Carl(that's what we call him) makes when he comes to our kitchen window twice a day for peanuts,we say "Carl's here" because we know it's him and we throw him peanuts which he then takes and feeds to his mate Carla(That's what we call her) who waits near by for him,he feeds her first every time then gets his fill. They been coming to our house for every day almost 2 yrs now so I can tell you from experience, they're really cool birds to watch once you get to know a couple of them and see how much they care for each other.

You are so right.... not that it matters, but I've been watching the couples for a few years now & really really respect them. They stick together no matter what & take care of their kids together also. Mostly, it's the male that I've seen teaching their children how to eat & learn. Doesn't matter. She's probably back at the nest with another batch for him.

I lost the love of my life, 18 years together, he passed unexpectedly in October he was only 36... I hardly remember a time in my life he wasn’t there, and at least once a day I think about the first time I saw his blonde curly head over the school bus seat in 7th grade. Every time I hear and see the Cardinals in my yard, I think of him and I know somewhere that beautiful bird will fly to it’s mate, I hope that’s how it is when I die, I’ll fly right to him for eternity. For now, I have our son and that’s what I live for ❤️ 🪶

Nice job capturing the video and the audio! When I hear them in Southern Ontario Canada, they often sound like they're singing, "Pretty Bird, Pretty Bird, Pretty Bird, Pretty Bird". Your first one has the "Pretty Pretty Pretty Pretty" going on. I heard one today and thought how terribly LOUD from such a small creature! Just as in one of your video captures, there were two birds, a couple hundred yards apart, singing their hearts out. Thanks for your video! :-)

Thank you for this. I`ve had a male for years at my window every morning and feed him every day and sang back to him always and never noticed the rrrrrr at the end. Too bad I can`t roll mine tongue darn it :) He wakes me up before daybreak and outsings the morning dove. I can time him and so I have to wear earplugs but he`ll still peck at the window anyway. If I feed him too early than the racoon gets it and too late, the squirrels and chipmunks that are all named each year, all year for the squirrels get it if too late as well. I feed them all twice a day anyway and more:))

The cardinals by my house have developed a completely rendition this year. A few weeks ago it was almost like they learned a new language and are being very careful to enunciate the new syllable very clearly. If they don't get it right they start over. Even though the second part sounds the same as usual, like the ones in this recording, the beginning is so very different this year that I wasn't able to identify the bird with absolute certainty by it's call alone and had to see it to confirm it.

I heard the cardinal that lives on my property sing a pretty complex and beautiful set of chirps. I was looking for it here. I recognized one call (3rd I think) on this video usually warrants a duplicate response. perhaps a location/monitoring application between mates or older chics w/ mom also. Those calls have a meaning to them. What a wonderful creation.

It's the first of May, and I hear the birds calling around my house all the time. But when I started noticing the call last year, it had been months since I had actually seen a cardinal. My mother had told me she had seen a few jays, but I had to tell her it was the cardinals doing the sweeter and more loquacious calls because jays are closely related to crows and ravens and thus have a "harsh" calls. When I hear the cardinal's calls from inside my house, though, it can get annoying.

I've heard one (in Florida) that calls like #4 high-to-low four times, with the ending of #2 five low durrs. PEE-urr PEE-urr PEE-urr PEE-urr durr-durr-durr-durr-durr. It sounds like a retro video game sound effect, I wonder if he is copying centepede or something?

Yes, often times it does sound that way.

Some of the males in our neighborhood have a call
That sounds like “Bernice” and will be repeated 3 or 4 times

The one you call "a little different" at 1:08 is their territotial call during mating season here in Md. I have managed aq fair copy and see the results when I do it.

I'm listening to the same call right now in late July in southern Ontario. It's way late for mating season but that is what I normally hear in the spring assuming all along it is a mating call. He's calling loud right now that's for sure.

Thanks for this video. Heard the last call, which I imitate and talk to a bird, but I never knew it was a cardinal I was talking to! Glad to know this.

There is a male cardinal (perhaps two) living in our woods and he/they always call out with the fourth song.
