    Hi Jake,
    I'm inspired by what you have done to your garden. Had I come across your videos last year when I turned my front yard into a rock desertscape to save water, I would dig down about 1 foot and cover it with wood chips instead. I tried planting trees in that area but none survived. I didn't know why. I asked the folks at the nursery where I bought those trees and also Home Depot/Lowe's, they couldn't tell me why either. I finally had a gardener come by and he said the gravel and rocks are trapping the heat and cooking the roots. That made sense.
    I'm so inspired by you that I'm ready to tear up my front yard once again. This time I want to remove 1 foot of the hard clay soil and backfill it with wood chips in the hope that the soil will become fertile next year. I want to plant fruit trees on it.
    I want to grow organically. I couldn't help but notice that the water hose you're using may have heavy metal and other toxic chemicals in it. Have you looked into alternative hoses that may be more green and suitable for an organic garden? I would like to get your opinion on that.
    Thanks,
    Jonathan from Los Angeles, CA

    Well I must say this was certainly interesting to watch. I never seem to get enough of the way North Americans plant Bananas. I grew up as the daughter of a Preacher who was a Banana Farmer in the Southern Caribbean islands. The tools the gentle man used to dig up the Banana Sucker as we say looks like a Shovel. We use something called a Spade or Scoop which is long and narrow made of stainless steel and very durable. Especially when you are digging 3 feet deep Banana holes to plant hundreds of Banana Suckers at a time.This kind looks to be from Central America.We have Volcanic soil that makes our Bananas get huge and comes in a variety. Bananas are different than its cousin The Plantain pronounced ( Plan-tin) as we say.This type looks like what we called Green Figs. They are usually tiny like half of a normal Banana. Now I grow Topical house plants in Canada and just got a Rojo Red or Zebrina Banana plant. Very nice video enjoyed the new info. Cheers Charleen.

    i always plant the freshly cut banana plants as soon as they are removed from the mother plant, i dont wash them, dont treat them with chemicals, i just plant them and water them heavily and they always grow well

    In Florida, we don't bother with all those steps. Cut the pup free, go plant it. They grow quickly without much effort. Just need lots of water. I use an automated system that uses rainwater I've harvested. Maybe other locations require more effort...

  • @SigmundQFreud

    "Chunk of the mother root" = Corm. It is white and bulbous similar to the base of an onion. Your pup should contain ideally about 15-20% of the base mother corm as the corm acts as the brain of the plant. This will not harm the mother plant instead it will only stimulate growth of the mother. To give you an idea exactly of how resilient banana trees are, in hawaii to control weevils which attack the banana trees corm, They pull up the plant violently and quickly with no regard to the base or corm and machete off the outer base of the corm and carelessly remove all affected areas and replant. Imagine shaving your head with a machete... Then the tree is stuck back in the ground and takes off with a new breath of fresh air. These trees are incredibly resilient.

    I highly recommend growing ice cream banana in only a few months the thing is 7ft but the biggest thing that I’ve seen is that if you want your banana tree to grow fast it needs full sun after that you get the mother plant and the pup to be the same size and fruit in the same year

    So I just had the pleasure of watching this video I am 3 year late sorry about that. So I live up the street from you I have had Banana trees growing in these huge pots in my backyard. I have had them back there now for about 5 to 6 years . After watching this video I decided to go ahead and plant three of them in the ground . Of course each year the banana trees produced babies so I started out with one tree in a pot now I've got like five or six trees in one pot. So anyway I just wanted to say thank you for sharing the video I appreciate your backyard and I like your lifestyle as far as growing stuff. So thank you.

    Surround the banana tree trunk with chicken wire fencing then pack that with mulch to protect the tree through the winter now that's a lot of work but I like that but what I did also worked but wasn't as pretty I used the plastic that was used to cover mattresses to wrap around the trunk of the tree and it worked perfectly for the whole season

    When I was younger I remember we just dig the pup then plant it immediately. It survives without any problem. Maybe some of them die but I thought they died because we failed to water them.

    • @aaronwism
      @aaronwism 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      you need to let the corm dry in the sun first .the reason some died is cause they will rot if you don't dry them first as they are mostly made of water

    I thought Joey told you to let the pup dry in the shade three days and then soak it in the solution. You did the soaking first then let it sit in the shade. Was I mistaken or is there a reason you did it this way? My bananas in Florida have lost all leaves for two years and I will now be moving them to a south side of the house protected area and hope they do well. We are in north Central Florida and these banana trees previously did extremely well near Tampa and produced 90-110 bananas on each stalk each year. I am hoping for a similiar measure of success. Thank you for the video.

    • @organicgrow4440
      @organicgrow4440 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello,
      I think he did let it dry in shade as told cause the plant looked pretty dry when he was planting it in maybe he just skipped that bit between for us to assume it's done already & the benefit of having this all in one video ?
      Thanks, happy gardening.

    20:45 overwatering a banana tree.
    It is virtually impossible to overwater a banana tree.
    Yes, you can drown a banana tree in stagnant water however you can't overwater a banana tree in sandy soil or in soil in which the water passes through it so as long as the water just doesn't sit there -- banana trees it will only take what it wants

    I purchased 2 large banana trees from Lowes (8ft tall) that I will plant in the backyard. Do I need to prune them? or just plant them?
