    About Spectre Sound Studios:
    I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, and plugin effects.
    We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
    Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
    I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
    Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

    • @ESPmrBrough
      @ESPmrBrough 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      from my experience, it's mainly younger musicians, who dont actually hate standard; they're just annoyed that they cant play their favourite songs without changing tuning or key

    • @orlock20

      There is the baritone guitar where "standard tuning" is in B. Anybody with a baritone guitar will sound heavier than a guy with a standard guitar in drop C#.

    • @NebulonRanger
      @NebulonRanger 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This misconception is partly responsible for the dj0nt meme too. Sounding heavy is all about how the guitar and bass interact with the drums, most importantly the kick.

    Yo glen, I'm a sales associate at guitar center (just started and I'm not making any commission) and i have found that the people who buy the spiders (after me recommending blackstar, Marshall Code, and fender in that order before line 6) are people who want to try out a bit of everything before buying the first "proper" amp and like the concept of plugging into a real amplifier with a real speaker. I've gone as far as recommending bias/jamup and have shown them the IRig stuff we carry (what I started on, found it annoying) and they choose not to deal with computer software. For a lot of them it's about the learning curve that it requires versus the plug-n-play ease of the combo amps. I'm always honest, i tell em the pros and cons of everything, and I let them make their decision for themselves. There are still good people behind those counters, even at the chain stores! Love the channel!

      I'm glad somebody chimed in on that point. I always find that it's musicians that work behind the counter at music stores. Granted sometimes you may encounter a manager or owner who is just looking to make a buck but on the rare occasion I've had a question for staff they always seemed genuine in their reply. Even so far as admitting they couldn't help and referring me to a more informed employee. The more research you can do into whatever purchase you wish you make the better off you'll be. Search online, in stores, ask friends.

    • @xXjuangarciaXx
      @xXjuangarciaXx 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      dainbramage0 indeed it's musicians working most of the time. I try to be as informed as possible when dealing with a customer. A lot of people refuse to ask questions, but answering them is exactly what I'm paid to do, and I'm completely honest in my opinions of the gear

    Love you stuff Glenn. Never used a Spider, but I recorded my entire solo album using a Line 6 POD HD. Granted, it was $500 in 2012, but still a somewhat decent piece of gear. I think I got some decent tones at least, not the best, but still pretty good.

    How do I explain to my parents that different people like different tones, and that I'm not a big fan of the fuzzy sounding Bugera they got me without them saying "Guitarists 2000 times better than you use this amp!"?

  • @dreamrealitysyndrome
    @dreamrealitysyndrome 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Glenn, I appreciate your honesty. Not only that, I love how straightforward you are! Long ago I purchased a used POD. Now, I have something to film my Office Space parody with!
    Anywho, how do you feel about Zoom pedals? The other day I found a B9.1UT bass multi-effects pedal at a pawn shop, and I'm contemplating on purchasing it. I'm a guitarist who dabbles in extended range. I got a couple 8 strings and a few more 7's, and my primary amps are Peavey Vypyrs (the 60 and 120). Now, the Sanpera pedals that are required to control these amps are somewhat rare and quite expensive (to me. I purchased both amps for less than $200 via CL), but I need something better than the Sanpera I that I use for live shows. Presets, loops, channels and multiple options are all grossly important to me. Videos showcasing this Zoom pedal leave a lot to be desired.
    Would you recommend this bass pedal? Or is there possible solution out there? I look forward to hearing from you!

I've even purposely looked around a bit for shits and gigs in stores and online a few times, I'm from alberta as well so it's not like I'm super far away from where they're manufactured. Not defending line 6, even when i was a beginner i knew they were trash, but you should recommend some more cheap amps instead of always recommending the same one.

    also, people complaining about wasting a spider 5 amp? the video where it got destroyed proved it sounded worse than the spider 2 (which I assume is also cheaper) and there really aren't many amps in that price range that can say that. the spider 5 is a waste of resources.

    Hey Glenn, huge fan of your videos and I just got out of a session that I know you would LOVE hearing about.
    So the engineer the singer was working with said don't worry about an amp he had one. So I show up and the guy pulls out this old tweed Gibson amp... Not bad, but super buzzy. So he goes, "well this guitar player left this amp here..." And pulls out a Line 6 Spider and sets it down and plugs it in and goes "wow, this sounds killer man!" After playing through all four channels. Then he gave it to me on the insane channel (by the way this is a jazz session) and said, "wow man that's badass and WAY better than my Gibson tube amp" so I ended up doing the session with a cheap Shure vocal mic on a Line 6 Spider and it was just terrible. Never going without a small amp again.

    When I went to go buy my first electric and amp, the guy at the store said to buy a line 6 spider IV. 5 years later, he has his own studio and is now my guitar instructor and regrets ever selling me that amp. It's so ironic because he hated working at that music store. The other week he was telling me about how one of the techs doesn't even know how many flats are in the key of F! Yeah.... that's why I haven't been to that store in 3 years.

    Hi Glenn, I use to work in musical instrument retail back in the 80's (yeah, I am that old), but never sold anything to a customer that I thought was crap (gearwise, not the customer), unless they insisted it was what they wanted. However, I buy pretty much all of my gear from Anderton's in Guildford, and find all of their staff to be honest and forthright. Yes, you know the place, you've been there :-) .

      If I'm playing sax, having the guitarist and bassist downtune half a step makes things really easy for me (I get to play in the easier keys). Interestingly, if I'm playing recorder, standard tuning makes it easier--again, because I get to play in easier keys (E is easier on recorder than Eb. WAY easier.)

    I always forgot to comment on the Fearless Spider 5 review. I agree with you on the fact that these LineSux amps really live up to their name. As most kids in the days I bought a Spider Mark II because the music school had it and I was crazy about the Metal setting. 2 gigs with a failing amp (a big POP and no sound until a reboot) and a couple of years later I decided to fix my mistake and go for a Blackstar Series One 1046L6. Not a fair comparison, but hell, at least these guys know how to make amps.
    Keep up the good job in trying to knock some sense in the home recording industry ;) Cheers man!

    I got a closeup priced Line6 Duoverb in 2003 for Christmas when I was 13 and just getting started playing live with my first band. I was never totally impressed with the tones, but a 100w 2x12 amp for $300 that could give me enough versatility to get through any live set served me well throughout high school. I'm now running a Mesa Rect-O-Verb 25 head through the 2x12 Duoverb cabinet and it sounds great. Probably because the Duoverb was the original "high end" Line6 model so they actually loaded it with Celestion Vintage 30s. I just took the Line6 badge off the front of the cab so no one knows the difference.

    My first amp was a Line 6 spider III 15 watt. It's still in my closet. I don't regret getting it as a first amp. At the time it sounded amazing to me, but it was cause I just wanted to play loud and distorted metal music and mess around with weird effects. I've been playing for 7 years now and I still own that very first amp but it sits in my closet covered in torn up skate brand stickers and beaten to shit. I look at that amp and smile every now and then. So many memories were made with that amp despite how shitty it was. I honed my chops with it. I ended up getting a Blackstar combo a few years after that Line 6, and just recently got a Vox AC30 so it's been a wild ride for me in terms of amps.

    Glenn, I work at a music store (Guitar Center's main rival) outside of NYC, and I can promise you I don't get paid enough to "try to make a buck" off of our customers. Also, the Line 6 Spiders are not selling at all. We've had them for over a month, plenty of people have tried them and I can think of exactly one person who purchased one. They're confusing to use, are more expensive than other modeling amps and don't sound any better. In our store, the best-sounding amps were the Blackstar ID:Core amps, and those sold the most. When those went out of stock, the next best thing we carried, the Fender Mustang, became the best selling. I've found that any time I've seen someone sell something based on commission over quality, it gets returned just about every time. If you want some examples of great, affordable gear, I'd be happy to share.

      I'd like to know more about the ID:Core series, heard good things about them. I have a Blackstar HT5R mini-stack for my home practice amp and I find the sound coming out of it is quite impressive, and since it's a 5 watt amp, you don't need to crank it too loud to get that nice tube tone. I'd like to know how the ID:Core compare the HT5 since they're quite cheap

    • @TheSludlow3
      @TheSludlow3 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      HCkev as I have the 10w id:core combo, I would say that the tone is very reasonable for the tiny speakers. The line out sounds good too. With all that said the 10w is not loud at all. The speakers can't handle the low end at high volume especially if you are jamming with the aux in. Beautiful stereo quality also. I use mine for a speaker on my TV. I can only imagine that the 40w version would take care of any issues I have with the 10w.

    Hi Glenn, piano and synth player here. First of all thank you for the time you take puting together your videos as to save people like me precious time by sharing with us your experience.
    I am as of today recording at home a demo before I take it to a producer or sound engineer and actually start spending hard earned cash on an album. I am using a MIDI controller, a Yamaha AG03 a Shure SM58 and my laptop loaded with Logic Pro X, reason I am doing this is because sometimes it is hard to get my ideas through to others by plain use of language. So far most of the instrumental work I've been able to pull together in a competitive level through VST's, unfortunately, as you must know, when it comes to strings, like guitars or violins, it just sounds awful, too awful to even work on a demo. I am thinking on taking guitar lessons but I fear it will take me years to pull through to a competitive recording level... Do you know of any VST's that could at least pull well enough a guitar sound (acoustic and electric) to keep on a demo?
    Much appreciated

    Hey Glenn,
    I'd like to explain in detail about 'why' I commented to you (nicely) about the destruction of the line 6 amp
    ..., because where I live here in Indonesia, the young local kids always ask me to save my old 'used up crusty rusty' guitar strings for them and these truly appreciative and often talented kids are always genuinely stoked when they get them also.
    I have a basic home studio setup here catering for my songwriting needs, but I occasionally record some of these stringless guys, as I know in their lifetime they could never get the opportunity otherwise to record.
    As much as I'd like to charge something for my services (to help pay for my never ending gear costs) ..,
    I just don't have the 'heart' to even ask for any money from this local music crew - as their reality is it's considered a luxury if they can get a chicken wing to go with their rice - let alone actually buying strings and the luxury to record.
    One thing that is priceless though is the look of joy on their faces when they hear themselves produced in a track (playing my guitars), as opposed to the usual sound of their beyond beat up acoustic that has a horribly bent neck and is missing a few strings.
    Cheers Dave.
    PS: In my original comment to you about the line 6, take note that I did mention you gave other stuff away :)

    Hey Glenn. I'm really interested in your philosophy of cutting everything below 80hz in the bass and kick drum. I'd like to know your reasoning behind this in a more technical level.
    As far as I'm aware of, it makes sense to put high pass filters below 75-100hz on everything but the kick drum and bass guitar. I feel that all the other tracks in a mix should be making room for the bass and kick. Why filter the lower frequencies of those two tracks? I feel that that's their living space.

    • @SpectreSoundStudios
      @SpectreSoundStudios  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +FoxWood no absolute rule here. I'll cut bass guitar at about 75hz, and kick closer to 40. Do what sounds good

    • @RyanForsythMetal
      @RyanForsythMetal 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't forget that a HPF isn't usually a hard cut. I do the same as Glen, with a slope of 6dB/oct (not sure his slope) then follow up with a tight q eq boost @ 60hz (ish) if/when required. I don't have the math, but frequencies (30hz and lower) in the low end eats up headroom and is 'generally' inaudible in a metal mix. Like generally every other engineer says 'start cutting until you hear something missing, then back it off a bit'. Think with your ears.

    Now, I'm no sound engineer, but I've had a black star amp for ~5 years now, and I thinks it's great. It has good clean tones and great overdrive options. It never cuts out, crackles, or any other bs. Solid investment for home playing, and maybe small gigs, but I don't know how well it would hold up in a venue that required a lot of volume. Anyway, black star amps are worthy options if you're looking for a starter amp that isn't shit (mine was 300 I think).

    I think what people like about line 6 amps is that it's got that "cover your mistakes" heavy distortion nailed, the graininess even on low-gain settings really makes it easier to play. I'm not defending line6 (in fact I just bought a vox AC15 and am smitten by how it sounds) but I think anything with enough distortion to a person who doesn't know better is good for them, and they defend it because it sounds better than their previous 15w solid state practice amp.
    Their bass amps are palatable though, I'll give them that.

    Modifying changes sound drastically! I'm using Jet City JCH50 head, and Shockwave distortion pedal, hand-made Tube Screamer and Super Hard On (all are modified and hell a lot cheaper, sounds better and noiseless than original).
    If you want to get something cheaper, learn by yourself will definitely save your bank.

    My first amp was a Dean Markley Spectra that my parents bought me back in the early 80s. I can't remember if it was the 80 or 122. I also got a Gibson Challenger, which I still have, but the amp I sold for drum equipment when I became a drummer in the mid 90s. That was a fun little amp.
    Anyone else have this combo?
    Love the vids! Keep 'em coming!

    when I was a studio owner, I had at least one band a month come in with a line 6 product. we always sacked it for a tube amp- no exception- at the band's request. I think the line 6 has a use: a cheap way to try out on-board effects until a young guitarist can put a pedal board together.

    I got lucky when I first picked up guitar. Around 7 years ago went to a guitar center and was going to get a line 6/Epi combo. Guy helping me out pointed me towards a Strat/Fender amp combo and wouldn't stop repeating how bad the Line 6 was.

    Yeah, i have a question. I can't really get good tones out of the bias amp software. I'm not a metal player, I mainly use a vox ac15, but when I want to play silently i use the bias. It doesen't sound bad, but it just lacks the fullnes, and has really harsh top end. I got a decent sound in a mix with a lot of eq-ing, but i don't think that's the point. Do you have any tips? I use a Focusrite scarlett 2i2, and a pair of akg headphones.
    I like your videos btw. You do go overboard sometimes, but it's ok because you are right, and you prove the point!

    I actually got a Spider V for Christmas as a gift from my wife, since she heard me mention I was in need of a practice amp after my little Peavey Vypyr bit the dust. I mostly rely on VSTs and impulses for my sound, but I don't always want to play in front of a computer and I can't crank the 5150 at home. The Spider does not sound great, definitely agreed, but strictly for practice it suits me alright and it was a nice gesture, so I don't intend to get rid of it. The remote app is actually really cool, on the positive side.
    I do think there's a valid argument when people say you should have donated it or sold it for cheap or something, rather than just destroy it. You may think it sounds like shit - and veritably, it does - but there's a kid out there desperate for something to play through that does not care what it sounds like; they just want to play.
    I had to rely on the generosity of others for my first electric guitar set up myself when I was a kid. I bought my first electric off a friend for $40; a green Series 10 that was damn near unplayable. I bought my first amp (a Dean 15W) at Goodwill for cheap. I traded a pair of aggressive in-line skates (Salomon St-8s, for those in the know) for a BOSS metal zone. I knew I wouldn't sound like In Flames, but I just wanted to play. The BIAS giveaway is a nice gesture, but that still requires a computer.
    I get what you're saying that you don't want to give away something that sounds bad, but for some poor kid just starting out you would have made their year.

    About 5 years ago I picked up a Peavey Vypyr T60 (60w tube power section and 1x12 combo) for around $200 used. It's a modeling combo amp that competes with the Line 6 Spiders, but sounds waaaay better. It doesn't replace proper amps and software by any means, but it served me pretty well over the last couple years. Thoughts on the Peavey Vypyr series? Or perhaps even the notion that beginner combo amps aren't even relevant any more with the cheap software and plugins we have access to these days?

    I want to give a thumbs up to the Blackstar stuff. I have an HT Club 40, and I love it. I've played around with the little ones, and they sounded pretty great, especially for the price.
