- When the results of the Pokemon Trading Card Game Illustration Contest were announced and they feature Pikachu, Eevee, Pokemon Cards, Cheating Entrants, Traced Artwork and AI Art! A couple of days ago we finally got an update and we know who got disqualified. I'm here to give an overview of the Drama and spill the tea on what happened, who got disqualified and who took the cheaters' place. For a bit of positivity, I also rate my top three artworks of every catagory!

One artist girl was accused to use AI unfortunatelly. They use AI checker to check if her art is indeed AI. AI checker show it was, but also AI checker said that Originally Starry Night from Van Gogh is AI generated. So yeah, don't believe AI checkers,b ecause they're not accurte. You must first educate yourself and chech yourself, not with app or program if it is AI or not.

it's comforting to learn that laws are being put in place recognizing ai generated images as exactly what they are, other people's actual art cut up and stitched back together
gives me hope that there'll always be a place for creatives in work, seeing as companies won't like the idea of not being able to copyright stuff
That last charizard definitely caught my eye too. Easily the most emotional piece submitted for me. Those who recognize minior’s lore know that that minior is dying. Charizard is recognizing that some Pokemon only fly at the very end. It’s very emotional to me that charizard is sharing in minior’s final flight. In alola, you summon charizard to fly for convience. But minior isn’t able to experience that luxury.
Really loved the artwork that you showed off from the artists. The bidoof made of felt has to be my favourite because it's so damn adorable💘

The Pokemon Company needs to let their artists draw off model more often than they do. I remember the early TCG and those cards have such memorable art.

I’m glad they’re selecting other entrants in lieu of the disqualified entries. I’m mostly curious if any entrants who posted their art online after seeing the results are no longer going to be considered because the rules state it can’t be previously published works.

Tbh I'm still not too sure about the "AI is here to stay" comment, because that's what people said about NFTs. All tech fads nowadays die out like this in favor of the new stupid shit that tech bros can get their hands on
As someone more based in computer science than art, yes. AI is absolutely here to stay. AI isn’t some fad that requires human buy in to have purpose. It’s closer to the invention of the assembly line than NFTs, being a process that increases productivity.
What we know as AI art though? Much less likely. However, it’s more likely things get a lot worse for the anti-AI crowd. Currently AI has a legal hurdle. But once that hurdle is overcome, the challenges to artists will remain. How do you compete with the mass replicability of code? Ideally, through quality. But for the vast majority of people, AI art is already pretty good. And it’s only going to improve. (Hell, I agree with the judges that picked the AI generated images as winning. They may have flaws that TH-cam artists love latching onto, but they’re more visually appealing than plenty of other entries.)
AI art can overcome the legal issues either through simply “not stealing” (using either public domain or art they have permission to use), or AI technology improving enough to not rely on training data so close to the final version. Artists can try to instill in others a value for human-made works, but that will be an uphill battle. Especially if you aren’t very good at what you do. As long as people enjoy art though, it’s unlikely that AI art will fade away.

Companies not in the creative industry who don't give a shit (i.e. most of them) about having human-quality imagery will take any excuse to ditch freelancers. Even in the industry, like on stock image sites, it's creeping up hard and fast and the average person won't absorb an image long enough to notice all the ugly bits and utter lack of intent. Yes, please do look at the comment above Neogeddon's. Though, while the fact the average person is going to be perfectly content with AI art is important, it would also be appreciated to look at the rest of my comment.
On the subject of the "ugly bits," it's important to remember the quality of AI art is a moving target. If a job (not just art) absolutely requires a high level of precision with numerous details, AI may take a while before it's truly a threat. If not, AI gets scarier a lot faster.
To the "lack of intent," the manner in which appreciation of art is such an individual experience hampers the impact of this considerably. For better or worse, beauty's placement in the eye of the beholder makes it difficult to ever appreciate art to the extent of its creator.

I only draw a bit on paper as hobby, but I used to be in a band and we wrote original music, and let me tell you seeing AI take over in every art form and autotune too in music makes me so mad. The human imperfections make art, Art!

I actually have a friend whose art gets confused with AI a lot. It’s really sad because they have a gorgeous art style. It’s sadly just in that semi realistic style.

Truthfully, TPCi should ask for an appropriate social to both confirm the artist's credentials and to promote the artist.
genuinely i'm surprised they dont make it an option, it would be so beneficial to the artists and it would help to screen for cheaters
I think any art contests need to have progress pictures as a requirement along side their final entries, that would hopefully be an easy way to distinguish between real and ai art.
Why not have them submit a video recording of them creating the art?
It won't eliminate AI art completely but it would make it extremely hard for cheaters to cheat

Problem: Apparently AI can create speedpaints now. Pretty bad speedpaints right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if even those get improved as time goes on.
Because AI prompters are so desperate to pass as real artists, that they've made AIs that can create speedpaints. Instead of putting in all the work it takes to *be* a real artist.

I could be tripping but i feel like I’ve seen some of these BEFORE the contest came out, maybe on some long pokemon music compilation. But like i said, i could be tripping and having a Mandela thing happening rn.
AI art tends to look really similar depending on the model being used and what it's pulling from, so that may be why you're feeling deja vu with these pieces.
Really glad they're listening, and giving people whose spots were stolen a chance to be selected in the top 300.

As for my favorite entry, Gotch's Melmetal deserves to win the whole thing!
God, anyone who has a painterly/smooth or anime art style is kind of fucked with AI. Now their genuine art will have this stigma or double-take where people have to figure out if it's real

To me, the art looks similar to Mitsuhiro Arita's work on older Pokémon cards. As such, I can't say if the cards were or were not generated automatically by a computer program. I can say there are several works of a similar style entered under similar names; that deserves an investigation.

8:54 I whent to a mall close to where I live and they had on all the mall's doors (entrances and elevators) Ai generated images. It was so obvious, they literally had a different looking blue monster on doors that were side by side 😞

I've even seen speed paint videos that are faked with AI. In that video you can see the hand and pencil sometimes being broken and morphing into other things, but only if you pause it on certain frames. From a distance it looks like a real hand! So yeah they apparently getting so desperate to trick people now that AI bros are even trying to create fake speedpaints now!!! I just don't understand why they even go to these lengths to trick people at all... This is so stupid! Why try this hard to pretend to be good at something you're not. People are gonna find out, you can't build a good reputation in scamming people in the long run. I guess their only goal is try to get quick bucks if they succeed in one scam and then jump to next scam.
But the funniest of all was that idiot who did AI art for a real gaming company, he was found out immediatly. Like did he really think he was gonna become a pro artist as a fraud???

It's gotten to the point where I'm regularly searching google to see if there's any good news about AI art hitting a ceiling or something, and not being able to get better. But nope. It just seems to keep improving. Hopefully it can never draw hands.

If it helps, I have seen AIs getting worse and worse because everything they create that gets posted then gets used by the next generation, which keeps implementing their mistakes.
There are obviously algorithms made to select the artwork they pick from (which is atrocious) but generally they don't so they will hit the ceiling at some point.
that pikachu on the bottom right is 100% ai art too, there are just too many things that doesnt make sense, like that pikachu has no brown on its tail, his back leg is completly broken (ai just put a food where his tigh bone still is), the cloud in the middle is the only one that has a random fiddly blue thing coming out of it and the plants on the right in the background are bleeding ogether with the clouds if you look closely- I bet i could tell more ai thingys about this piece but yeah, it is obviously ai art.
But tbh, im glad that the contest autorities did response to the backleash about ai art and removed the other ones. I feel so sorry for all the artist that have to go through this feeling of possibly losingag ainst ai.
Those entries are all great. It would be difficult being the judge for these contests.
That favorite Absol in tbe snowy woods at night is amazing! I love that at first glance it looks like the Absol is an imposing predator looking down on some timid creature, but then you look closer and you see its got a kindly smile and a friendly gaze. Really encapsulates Absol's whole lore in one image! I hope it wins!

Most of the Pikachu are great! Although, you're favorite gives me the whillies! That is clearly a cat someone traced over and its even got the Squirtle/Psyduck hands like that stadium AI one had. Not for me at all!

Flygon is best Gen 3 Pokemon and all its entries are splended! Though that first one's wings seem to be on an odd place on it's body.🤔
That first Melmetal goes hard! Feels like a print you'd see at an auto body shop or a cool band album cover! The BotW one is my favorite! Like you said the way the metal is rendered so simplicity yet effectively really sells it. The Claaaaaawwww! The Claw is our master! The Claw decides who will stay and who will go.

I've entered everytime and sadly they seem to over look my art. I tried twice so far and they always pick ai artwork or better artists.
Only time I use Ai, is for reference (much like when you use photos via search). But all work done is 100% mine.

The “people are assholes” argument against AI is a cop out.* At least by artists who claim it’s their main issue. If all AI images were made known to be such, and the technology (not the training material, but the underlying code) improved to the point it did not need to steal from artists, the anti-AI crowd would remain just as bitter. Because the underlying problem they face is that code is far more replicable than human work.
The goal of AI is the replication of the human mind. The closer that goal gets to being achieved, the more us humans will have to grapple with what it means for a human mind to be replicable.
*On rereading, “cop out” is almost certainly too harsh. It would be better to say that the reasoning just isn’t thought all the way through.
Saw someone saying the only AI that should be allowed near this contest is the one from Zero Lab. Yeah I'd let them enter. Porygon as well if it wanted to get artsy.

Hey just want to say, there is this TH-cam channel, @pokedexfillers with 200k subs that posts ai generated Pokemon, what this dude does is take a comment from his video and turn it into a Pokemon using ai, every time i see this I get mad, if I really wanted to I could get the same results since he is using ai, more recent videos i have seen have more blatant ai use.
I wanted to enter this contest but for some reason they excluded Europe. Let's hope next year's is treated with more care (and regard for us European artists).
I admit I do use Nightcafe,but I personally don't consider myself an artist. To be perfectly honest I'm not really impressed for the most part with what Nightcafe produces either. Most of it is actually pretty crap,99% in fact. Little flaws here and there in genuine art is one thing. But my god you should see just how awful some of the results from Nightcafe are. It doesn't help that more than a few people who use it have some very questionable views either. Sometimes I will come up with little stories for the images the ai generates,but that's really as fair as any genuine artistic endeavours go with Nightcafe from me. I used to draw when I was a young boy,but I fell off and as result my actual real life artistic skills are stunted at a rather juvenile level ( I used to doodle crude cartoon demons, because I was an edgy boy 😅). What's sad to me about Nightcafe is that I know this young woman off of it who used to be able to make art in real life but her health started to fail her and so she uses Nightcafe as therapy for herself. So it's really a mixed bag of people. There's people like myself who use it more as a hobby now ( a pretty lame hobby at that 😑) and the young lady who uses it for therapy. But most of the rest are probably a bunch of chancers and scoundrels. Some of them even have the pure cheek to actually sell what the ai produces. Now that to me is really taking the piss and spitting in the eye of real artists. That really annoys me and I'm not a real artist. I'm a charlatan compared to real artists,so I can only imagine how upsetting it must be to real artists. Oh one last thing before I forget Nightcafe allows "artists" to sell NFTs of their "creations"! It would almost be laughable if it wasn't so horribly dystopian 😦 anyway I am sorryfor the long comment.

I hate how digital artists are acting over AI art. They are doing the exact same demonizing and attacking of others that was done to them by traditional artists when digital art first started, including the issues with copyright, tracing, and a "computer is doing all the work". I switched to digital art from traditional in 1999 and dealt with so much of it. Digital art is now a respected medium but artists either haven't learned anything or are too young to have gone through it. I've lost a number of old digital artists to bullying over it already and Ive switched back to traditional to avoid the gatekeeping and abuse.
Personally I think AI does have it's place as a new medium and as a reference and concept tool but only when the art it trains on is licensed. Until then it's breaching copyright and should not be treated as anything other than a fun tool.
I don't know why the pokemon competition hasn't done what photography competitions have done for forever. For photography they must produce the original files to show their image hasn't been edited or composed. Art could produce the original files showing the layers and process. While AI can fake process video's, it can't fake (photoshop) files with layers ect.
I hope that digital art programs introduce a feature that records all actions for the file much like accounting software does so nothing can be faked.
Just from looking at the three “unproven” art pieces, I’m willing to bet money that the Pikachu sleeping under the tree and the sleeping Eevee are AI. The black markings on Pikachu’s ears slope differently; one is an arcing slope but the other is a v-shaped indent. Plus that hind foot looks funky. Plus the lines for Eevee’s front toes don’t match up either; one is clearly defined (front) and the other doesn’t travel up as high as the front one. Plus the ear tufts at the inner base are off, one has three and the other has two (for a higher number, more complicated tufts of hair it wouldn’t matter as much, but for a simple number like that, it would drive me crazy as an artist myself if it wasn’t the exact same number).
Does the tcg do art contests like that often(like yearly or whatever)? I missed out of that since I had no clue it was happening but I really wish I knew it was happening
there was a big one like this in 2022, as well as a few smaller ones throughout the years. This is the first one that the UK has been allowed to enter.

I feel like non-artists should avoid calling out AI entirely without either 100% proof or without input from an artist who understands this technology. A lot of real talanted artists have been caught in the crossfire cause dumbasses who dont understand the signs to actually look out for with AI publically call them out. That sucks so much.

People underestimate how much damage accusing people can do. I've been accused on more than one instance from people who obviously aren't looking too hard, and they're almost always incredibly insulting and aggressive. While I appreciate the passion, you guys SERIOUSLY need to calm down. Unfortunately AI isn't going anywhere, but artists might if they not only have to content with AI but have to contend with rabid "fans" constantly attacking and scrutinizing them with little to no basis.
As Cuppa said, don't scrutinize the piece, scrutinize the portfolio. I've been drawing since the 90's, but the people that accused me of using AI clearly didn't even care to check.
Also Cuppa, I really appreciate that you didn't make this video purely as an obvious grab for views from drama, but instead take the time to show off some of the great art! Made it an easy subscribe for me.

Good art, I liked the ones that seem the most liked aren't low-vision friendly. I liked them too, but if asked for details to explain...can't really see things distinctly enough.
First hearing about this out of context, by "results" you mean the "top 300" (aka. "quarter-finalists"). According to the rules, quarterfinalists are required to meet additional verification requirements to be judged for the "top 100" (semifinalists), after which the actual, final judging will take place to declare the winners. So their update that certain users may be disqualified for violating the rules (while quite timely and welcome) is actually a pretty standard announcement.
Love people using AI to detect "AI" art 🙄
It's not even perfect but in a way it can act as a Turing test for AI art.
I think this is why I use the official Pokémon artwork as reference for my drawings...

We'll never know if more were submitted but didn't make the top 300. It is unlikely however that any of vigo's entries remain however as none of the 300 left match the art style.

I'm not an artist, I have dabbled with ai generation to make references and such though. I would never claim anything I've generated as my own work, and I will always prefer getting actual art made by actual people. Anyone who does try to pass off the amalgamation of other people's art as their own is being inherently dishonest.
