    Very interesting!! Always loved the PT boats! This story is one cluster after another! I bet planners were tearing their hair out!!

    Well-done, in-depth research. Particularly enjoyed the use of then-and-now and contemporary imagery and Google Earth for reference.
    Little surprised no one has made mention that the star of McHale's Navy, Ernest Borgnine, served in the Navy prior to the war and re-entered service after Pearl Harbor. No PT time, however. Aboard a destroyer/minesweeper prior to the war and a, something less than high-speed anti-submarine patrol yacht (sounds more glamorous than it actually would have been) on the Atlantic coast during the war.

      Thank you for the compliment. Yes I knew about Borgnine's service but honestly this video would have been two hours longer if I went down every rabbit hole! TH-cam just doesn't have the attention span.

    Great video. The more information that comes out about operations during World War II, the more you wonder how we were able to succeed. Clearly it was by determination of those military members on the lower ranks because the upper brass made so many dumb decisions. Sadly, officers were often made of men simply because they had college or a college degree, and that often does not translate into common sense.

    I've been on small craft along the SE of Alaska many times in the late 60s. It was considered foolish to run anything short of a proven trawler west of Cook Inlet and insane west of Kodiak.
    These were some stout naval men.

    Where did you locate the theme from "They Were Expendable"? I'd forgotten it contained lyrics.

      That's the opening sequence of the movie. Sadly, the soundtrack is not available on it's own. 1945 was a little before the age of the soundtrack album I'm afraid.

    The P.T. mechanics must of be able to take apart and put together those boats with their eyes closed..

      My grandfather was a .50 AA gunner during WWII who became the shipboard instructor on their care and maintenance. The final test was taking one apart and putting it back together in a dark room, while blind folded for good measure. You had to do it in under 1 minute to pass. I don't doubt the engine mechanics on PT boats were held to the same standards.

      They certainly got plenty of practice pulling the engines out and replacing them!

    did the officer who decided the boats go under there own power. get a disposable discharge?

    • @LesSharp
      @LesSharp  ปีที่แล้ว

      I really can't imagine the circumstances that would make that one the best decision.

    l m sorry to say it but those PT boat guys got the short end of every stick the US navy could dish out they deserved a better pensions for that one up north along with any infantry that went up there too !! That all was quite the shit show !!
