I can vouch for the 'semi-retractable claws'. In 1980, I moved to Saudi Arabia to work as an expat in the Oil industry at ARAMCO. We lived in a trailer park in the desert for a few months before we were assigned a proper house inside the expat settlement at Dhahran. Anyway, one night we heard a cat under the trailer, and discovered a tiny kitten in a piece of discarded plastic sewerage pipe. It apparently was abandoned by a less than perfect mother. We eventually took it in, fed it, and it purred loudly and snuggled up to us. Left it in a bedding box for the night. We also gave it a sandbox, which it used without training. AT bedtime, It howled miserably until we moved it into the bedroom, where it crawled up into the bed, purring loudly. We kept the playful kitten for a few weeks, but eventually gave it away to another couple & their son, as it played roughly and never could retract its claws. And our arms were always badly scratched, tho the cat continued purring and snuggling and was never really angry, and never scratched out of fear. They eventually moved to another ARAMCO site in Ras Tanura, and we lost track of them. We discovered much later that it was actually a Sand Cat, and NOT a domestic cat.
I think it is hard for cats to be gentle, because their skin is so much stronger than ours. A lot of bites and scratches are actually signs of affection that are not at all painful, if you have tough cat skin, so it takes a lot of discipline for a cat to learn not to bite or scratch too hard. I think domestic cats are probably very intelligent, which is how they figure out to be gentle enough, assuming they receive training from a good human. With that sand cat, you probably would just need to live with the scratches, since it will probably never understand that humans have weak, fragile skin compared to cats.
I’ve been watching nature programs since I was a young girl and I have never seen this beautiful feline before. Thanks for sharing this remarkable wild cat.

Cats are the only truly magical creature left in the world. And dolphins. And elephants. My longhaired dachshund is a genius so he's pretty special, too. But there's something about cats... My son was glad Molly cat wasn't any bigger. She tucked him in every night and was very strict about his bedtime. He had visions of a giant Molly picking him up by the scruff of his neck and carrying him off to bed herself. She kept him cozy every night. She had chosen him as her special human. Murphy, her brother, loved everybody. And they were treasured in return. The fun we had with those two goofy cats in the house!
My brother had a Tom cat. He, and his family had been out. When they came home. They're were two dead side winders, in the living room. The cats claws are perfect, for catching the snake behind the head... Good thing, he had young kids back then.

Cats are amazing! I live in an area surrounded by tall grass and sugarcane fields. It's not uncommon to find dead snakes in the morning, either in front of my door or just outside our gate, likely attempting to enter. I rescue stray cats, and they sleep all over the house. I also have tiny puppies, and my cats protect them from these snakes. There was also a memorable incident during a power outage when it was very dark. I had only one flashlight, and a bat flew inside. One of my cats instantly killed the bat with a single strike of its paw.
Sand cats have several physical adaptations that help them survive in arid environments, including large, furry paws that protect their feet from hot sand and a dense coat that insulates them from temperature extremes,Animals in frigid regions also need a substantial amount of fur on their legs to stay warm, nature is truly fascinating.

These cats need protection. That is a small amount population of these cats. And if hunting them for the sheer desire to kill something, anything without some protection, it can take less than two years to become endangered. But these are not the only species of small cats that are treated like pests. There is a tiny one of the Amazon (can't remember what they're called) are becoming fewer in number. So much focus on bigger species that the smaller ones, just as important, get overlooked & little to no funding for study.

There are videos aplenty of ordinary domestic cats with snakes. Maybe we don’t get to see the ones where the snake wins, but in the usual videos the cats are eerily fast compared with the snakes.
