  • Did you know the recorder has been used in hundreds of pop/rock songs, from the 1960s on? I was going to make a video where I talk about it all, but then I decided to choose a bunch of my favourite examples and just play it for you 😅
    A few notes!
    - there are soooooo many more songs. If I've missed out your favourite - next time! Share it below ;)
    - not all of these songs were strictly recorder, a couple were for flute or whistle. Or even synth. But I thought they fit the main theme and deserved a shout out!
Thanks to Windkanal magazine for compiling so many songs! You can find SIX youtube playlists featuring recorder in popular music here: www.windkanal....
The bands I included that actually feature really professional recorder players:
    - Burntfield burntfield.com

"El Cóndor Pasa" was compossed by Daniel Alomía Robles, a Peruvian Musician. Simon and Garfunkel just covered an arrangement by Los Incas, an Argentinian Folk Band.

I discovered your channel 1 week ago, it got recommended because I decided to try to start the flute again during the lockdown, so I watched a lot of flute videos and bam you got recommended.
I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL. Luckily I got my soprano and tenor recorders from my parents house from back in the time when i played in my middle school recorder ensemble, I might try to play them again!
And I think Toto should hire you for his next tour (if they reform), this Africa solo was GREAT!
    Cheers from France.

    Hello Sarah!
This was immensely entertaining and it really proved - as if there were still need to prove it - how versatile and musical the recorder can be.
About these songs, there were some that I had heard before but I admit I had mistook the recorder for a flute... please don't ban me!
Therefore I'm awestruck by how suitable the recorder is for pop and modern "easy" music.
And once again, a great video from you!

So I did a tiny bit of research and the reason the Africa "flute" solo has five sharps is (besides ofc just being the key), they actually wrote it for keyboard synthesiser! They used a synthesiser (for the recording as well) to emulate a "brassy flute" sound (per wikipedia), but certainly the part would be much easier to play on a keyboard than a recorder. Though I think your version sounds much nicer :)

Was looking for a "wow! gnidrolog!"-comment, almost thought I'd have to leave one of my own! That, and I was waiting to see if she'd play anything Gryphon.

@@edvinsmusic Came here hoping I'd hear some Gryphon as well. I did a guitar impression of "Second Spasm" a little while back, including the multilayered recorder solo at the end. But it'd be great to see someone try double-tonguing all three harmony melodies on the recorder! 😂 (I've got them all transcribed in MIDI, in case anyone wants a go at it... 😜)

"If I've missed out your favourite - next time! Share it below."
Here are a few exemplary tunes that play very well on the recorder, "The Lonely Shepherd” and “The Girl from Ipanema” on the soprano recorder, “Ave Maria” on the alto recorder, and the theme from "The Last of the Mohicans" on the tenor recorder. ( ͠° ͟ʖ ͡° )

Brilliant video, thanks :) I'm a clarinettist and I did the Africa solo for a friend on my A so only two sharps (phew). I play a lot of Nights in White Satin solos (or I did) on the recorder down the pub, also Men at Work - Down Under. My absolute faves to steal are the sax and fiddle solos/riffs from Waterboys' Whole of the Moon and Fisherman's Blues.

Not a Recorder originally (it's played on Transverse Flute) but I learned all of the Flute parts on Soprano Recorder to Firefall's "You are the Woman", that's my favorite Flute intro ever. The 1st fill I pitch an octave higher, the 3rd I play the low A as a high A... but it all still works. 😎

Sufjan Stevens utilizes the recorder pretty extensively in a lot of his records, though I don't know if there are any actual recorder solos.
