You do make a point there. To be fair, Titanic started being built in 1909, so they were only nine years into the new decade: Victorian ideals/styles hadn't been shrugged off yet in favor of Edwardian.

Would have been 100% First-class survival for children, but for the Allison family, who stayed on the ship searching for their baby boy, Hudson Trevor. Their nursemaid, Alice Cleaver, had taken Hudson and left with him in a lifeboat without telling them. Tragically, Hudson's three-year-old sister, Helen Loraine, perished as a result.

This was a great clip and long overdo as there IS very little talk about the second class aboard Titanic. I have read about it in bits and pieces, but never was there anything as comprehensive as this. To see the whole thing is very impressive. I am also a bit shocked at how small the second class accommodations were. Meaning the actual amount of second class areas, not the rooms, which looked fantastic. I can see why many said that the Second Class aboard Titanic was like First Class on other ships. But now seeing it, it just reinforced the level of luxury the Titanic had. It was clearly one of the most beautiful ships ever built and sadly, ships like this will not be built again. Just so much work, effort and detail went into the ship only to be lost on the maiden voyage. Very fascinating video and enjoyable! Keep up with the great work, this is an excellent channel!

I've been watching your channel for well over a year now and all I can say is that I love it. Your knowledge about Titanic is extraordinary and accurate. After watching this one on second class by Titanic: Honor and Glory I finally subscribed to your channel. I've been a Titanic aficionado since I was 10 years old. (now 77). In 1958 I begged my parents to take me to Manhattan to see A Night To Remember and just loved the movie. In 1962 me and a friend of mine (also an aficionado) did a commemoration tribute on the 50th anniversary of the sinking by building our own Titanic model ships.Last year, I became a member of the Titanic Historical Society. I find the Titanic Honor and glory videos fantastic and when I noticed that you were hosting the new second class video, I was excited but was also disappointed. You see, I was hoping to see the 3 types of the second class berths: second/first berths, regular second four and two berths, second/third berths. As you know the first and last were used interchangeably depending on passenger capacity accordiing to White Star Co .Only one channel discussed them ( The Great Big Move Channel-Titanic's Second Class Accomodations). It would be nice to see them on Titanic Honor and glory. By the way, I sailed on the QM2 twice and loved it. Keep up your good work.

I've never seen Mike so excited until "linoleum" was mentioned! LOL... He looked like a little kid who got what he wanted on Christmas morning... Since liquor isn't included in 1st class, I think I'd rather be in 2nd Class anyway, it looks much more "friendly"... Can you imagine sailing the equivalent of 1st class today on a cruise ship and nor having booze included? Never happen! Those hallways must have been a nightmare to navigate... oy... and can you imagine any ship having exposed lightbulbs now? Awesome vid!

I was always disappointed that second class always seemed to get overlooked in Titanic documentaries. I imagine ordinary people like me saving up to go second class. Many people don't realise that there wasn't a big middle class (second class) in 1912. It was a very small group of people.
That era consisted of mostly 2 classes - upper (first class) and lower (third class).
It was only during the mid-20th century (post WWII) that the middle class began to expand, due to socio-economic advances (such as education, health care, jobs etc.)
The majority of people back in the early 20th century were extremely poor, so the chances are - if you didn't know already - that your ancestors during that period would've been third/lower/working class.
(NOTE: this is not in any way derogatory or meant to give offence. It's just the way the world was. Both sides of my family were very working class at the beginning of the 20th century, and lived below the poverty line. It was only after World War II that their fortunes began to change).

    • @missanne2908
      @missanne2908 หลายเดือนก่อน

While in 1912 the largest segment of the population would be working class or lower, the idea of an upper class that was much larger than the middle class is ludicrous. The upper class in America in 1912 was around 1% of the population; in the UK estimates vary between 1-3%. Twenty percent of the UK population was middle class, 20% - 25% in America. My American ancestors in the 19th and early 20th century were all middle class - they owned their own farms or businesses, or were professionals or had other middle class vocations. It would be far easier to find someone with my background than someone whose ancestors came from the upper classes.

As a second class passenger, one would be thankful that you could easily locate the deck with the lifeboats. For a male passenger, ideally one would appear on the side of the ship where Officer Murdoch was initially loading and lowering half empty lifeboats so one could ask for a seat in the boat. I agree that the 2nd class Library looks inviting comfortable and would be my favorite choice for a location to read a book and socialize. This was wonderful Mike! I love the chats with the three of you exploring the part of the ship I probably could afford if I was crossing on the Titanic and again with stairs up to the boat deck...clearly for 3rd class passengers the route to the boats was more "circuitous."

2nd class seems like the best place for me to be in.
It have at least 80% of the luxury the 1st class.
No social obligatory meetings among nobles or world-class business men.
    Cheaper ticket than 1st class.
Overall a very cozy and comfortable place.
Now that I think about it. It's funny that despite all the luxurious commodity the first class of the Titanic or other Ocean Liner of the era have.
Today's Ocean Liner, the few remainings in the world, or Cruise Ship standard are much more similar to the 2nd class of the Titanic + the commodity of the 1st class.

Fascinating stuff. I'm really impressed with this simulation...the clocks actually move, and at the rate of an actual clock. Pretty cool!

I can’t get over how passable this would be as a modern aesthetic. Whilst some of the furniture is dated, the panelling and flooring actually fits well with some modern aesthetics. Especially anyone who has taste rather than the grey and beige washed people

I think I’d much prefer travelling in second class or 3rd class on Olympic class liners. Because of how compact it is. To me it just seems much cosier to have everything in one place. You have one staircase going from Boat deck to F deck with an elevator. Each landing leads directly to one of the public spaces. Then the aft side you have a smaller staircase which still connects you to most of the public spaces. You get a small enclosed promenade on C deck I believe it is and an open one on the B deck leval. The cabins are nicely decorated and furnished. I mean the second class areas are just so blooming lovely. Especially the lounge/library with its lush green chairs and sofas and the light wood panels. The dinning saloon is just gorgeous.
Then 3rd class is beautiful because of how practical it is. Sparsely decorated and furnished for sure but practical.
I love the 3rd class general room. To much it’s so cosy. Plain and basic but cosy. Plus you get the poop deck as your promande space. Come on that’s an amazing place for a good view of the ocean.
As much as I do like 1st class areas the other two classes are more to my tastes.

I also would not mind 2nd class being a more compact. I just stayed on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA and it is a fair bit of walking to find the various sights on the ship. We got turned around a few times.

Real quality linoleum back then could be polished to a mirror shine and it would hold up for a long time and a lot of buffing. I worked in a building from 1921 and it had the original linoleum and it still looked new because of maintenance.

I didn't forget 2nd class. I like 2nd class more than 1st in some areas. Like for instance, the 2nd class dining room is more nicer than 1st in my opinion. In the demo's of other people's streams, I always say to go to the 2nd class areas first

Nautical study once said that if you want to see how a shipping company really regards its clientele look at how they treated the second and third class rather than first, I'd have to agree and from this white star clearly had great regard for both, I've seen pictures of second class cabins from only a few years previously where the cabin looks more like a prison cell.

    At least *"S.O.S. TITANIC"* (1979)
got to feature Second-Class passengers including English science teacher and book author Lawrence Beesley (played by David Warner, who later starred as the villainous henchman Spicer Lovejoy in James Cameron's 1997 film).

Part of why Second Class is so mysterious/forgotten is that the sinking absolutely obliterated the entire interior. There are no comparison pictures with before and after except maybe a couple of recognizable exterior areas and scattered linoleum tiles. There's also the picture of the Smoking Room door's window in the debris field.
