For all that they moaned and complained about his videos, every Lagoon owner owes Colin a debt for what he did. Even Lagoon owes him for holding their feet to the fire and making them step up and address their mistakes.

I agree. Imagine he accepted hush money? Imagine a family lost to sea in a sunken lagoon 450 that never had their bulkheads addressed because they swept it under the rug and paid Colin to be quiet. I get that some owners were pissed, but unfortunately they were pissed at the wrong person and if I were one of them I'd be orgbszing the class action law suit against lagoon

Lots of pros and cons for a multihull vs a monohull. If you are sailing in pleasant weather and don't need to beat to weather, the multihull is great. If you need to close haul to a harbor, the monohull is more likely to get there under sail. Really bad weather is better survivable on a well-prepared monohull. A well-designed monohull will have better supports available to prevent falls when the boat gets pushed around by heavy winds and big seas. Every boat, however, is built on certain compromises: more room vs better supports, shallower draft vs pointing ability, more fun sailing vs less need to balance everything aboard. I chose a 47 foot monohull sailboat to sail 170,000 miles over 31 years with my wife and 3 kids. I still would do it again.

Also if you're going to fix one, you have to loosen your side stays so the boat can relax back to its original shape. It is the strain on the side stays that usually breaks the cross-members (bulkheads).

  • @david.seholm

I would go back to that boat in 4-5 months. The price on lagoons (and other catamarans) is coming down pretty significantly. Good condition lagoons with fixed bulk heads are selling at around $380-400K in the Med, and that is a far better sellers market than where that boat is. Going into hurricane season around July or August if that boat is still for sale they are either going to be in a far worse position.... and all they can do is say no, that does not hurt you.

You should also consider the fact that you will have gelcoat hairline cracks all over the boat, especially on the back deck where the upper structure has flexed around where the floor meets the walls. Ask Colin about the tons of gelcoat repair they did around the base of the upper structure. the cracking was so bad that pieces of gelcoat were literally popping out. Maybe a good bargaining point to consider. Pour some tonic water on the deck where you would expect to see hairline cracks. wipe it down and then look under a UV light in the dark. You will be able to see all the hairline cracks.

If you are thinking of changing your monohull for a catamaran, never lose sight of the equivalent space. You don't need a catamaran of the same length as your monohull to have even more space. You look at catamarans of shorter lengths than your monohull, and you will see that the space is greater anyway.
Tastes are personal, but my favorite catamaran is the ORC 42, which has more interior space than many monohulls of 55 to 60 feet in length, and is also very fast, so you will very rarely need to consume diesel since with only 5 knots of wind you already move at the same speed as the wind if you tune your sails well.

Hey alie . This is karen dussome's husband Ken . My personal opinion on a cat or mono hull is , stick to the mono hull . I think they handle rougher waters better and if you get hit by a wave from the side you wont end up on the roof capsized . Ive sailed smaller boats and i love the feel , just like you of listing to one side at a 45 degree to the wind and feeling the power . To me that is sailing . Loved the video chat again some time

Many years ago we wanted a larger monohull but price was a problem. We ended uo buying an ex charter Beneteau First 501 in Saint Martin and sailing her back to the UK. This is part of the same group as Lagoon catamarans. It was very tired but after a bit of investment and a lot of hard work we had our 51 footer that would have been beyond our finances otherwise. 25 years on and she is based in Mahon on the island of Menorca in the med. I am now in my seventies but a third generation is still enjoying her and I take the odd couple of weeks aboard.

  • @Cubamara
    @Cubamara ปีที่แล้ว

Two times the fun with catamarans. The additional space is great for people looking to throw parties on their boats. Catamarans are the party boat of choice at the docks and at boat shows. More space for stuff like surfboards, rafts, and other toys. More stuff to keep an eye on. More stuff for people to get hurt with. More stuff to clean and keep maintained besides the added space. More crap makes the boat heavier. A heavier boat will use more fuel, and travel slower.
Sailing a monohull is more exhilarating than sailing a catamaran. Catamarans stay stable, and you don’t get the same feeling with the movement of the wind and the water. Lagoon 450s are not performance catamarans. Don't have a clue concerning the exhilaration of speed you refer to.
Living on a monohull is like living in a basement apartment. Privacy on monohulls is harder to accomplish. More space enables a larger crew. Larger crew enables more drama. Drama causes you to throw people overboard.
There aren’t as many catamaran manufacturers, so sailors have fewer options when buying them.$400K for a +10yr old Lagoon 450, in need of care, is more than reasonable. Staying on the hard for as long as it takes to over fix some of these Lagoon 450s is not reasonable.

A cat would be out of my price range and I'm selling everything to do this. One that needs bulkheads had better be price adjusted.Even mono's can need bulkheads . Those final remarks were good for me. Sailing ! That's what its all about baby ! Remember, the only super fast cats are ones with small crews and not a lot of stuff , they need to be light. Not necessarily a cruiser typical lifestyle.

    @ronburton7090 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Fun episode. Like you, I love the feel of a mono hull but if you are going to be cruising around the world, or for an extended period, you can't beat the comfort and space of a cat. I'd rather be on Kiana in really heavy weather......but if you are cautious and watch the forecasts you will rarely get caught out. I'm sure Bruce would love a cat......boat that is.

Never have I been on a large boat or a yacht but catamarans are not what I consider a boat, technically it is !
More like a party barge or a golfed pontoon boat. Maybe better, if you entertain much ! Definitely faster !

So to be fair, to compare Keana to a cat.
Keane would have to be 90ft long...
And then you still have to ad one entire extra propulsion system.
Plus all the loads are exponentially higher.
Plus all the loads on the hulls are dynamic loads.
Plus all the running costs are exponentially higher.
I love cat, but if I could afford a cat I would likely be looking at monohull in the 70ft range.

If you never plan to go offshore, surf the South Pacific and are just going to do coastal crusing, then sure the cat is probably fine, but in a storm, offshore, i NEVER want to be on a cat. Lagoons were designed and built for island hoping in the carribean, not sailing offshore. The glass salon alone makes it unsuitable,, the freeboard and windage, it's inability to go to windward, the lack of a keel. A lagoon is not an offshore boat in any way shape or form. A monohull will always be safer offshore. You have a lot to learn.

    1) You could not have any better guys look at the boat.
    2) It is a Lagoon and they have bulkhead Problems. And I bet you you offer them 300 k they well take it. When people here "Lagoon" thats the first thing they think of and is the bulkheads.
    3) All you need to do is go back and watch what it takes to fix it.
    4) And for the same money you can buy a Seawind 1160 Brand New.
    5) Trying to compare a Lagoon to your Boat ( for sailing that is) your boat is way faster. Remember Lagoon is one of the slowest boats on the planet.
    6) The Boat market is slowing way down. It is becoming a Buyers market again. With all the New Boats hitting the market now the used market is getting flooded with Boats.
It is looking like 1995 all over again.
Back in 1995 I bought our 1988 42' aft cabin motor yawt for 250k.
Now remember the boat was 7 years old and new it was 1.6 million. But the boat markets bottom dropped out. People couldn't give Boats away back then.
And N O O N E is looking for a lagoon. Can you get a good deal on one yes, yes you can. Should you take it? That is up to you. You have to remember the boat is going to keep going down in price. That is a fact. And the Name Lagoon is in the dumpster and isn't coming out any time soon. And like I said you can get a Brand New seawind for that same money. And the seawind will sail Circles around your boat and any Lagoon.
I believe the 1160 starts at 300 and the 1260 starts at 400. And remember that is Brand New places. But go look for your self.
There is also the HH.44' Now i believe they start somewhere around 850.
Oo and I almost forgot the seawind 1370 . They just splashed the first one in the water a few weeks ago. I believe they have a Robe Rose package. It comes with water maker and washing machine no extra charge.
So yes get a cat. You will be happier and way more comfortable. Just look around you. You are seeing more and more cats every where.
Trust me when you sail across the pacific to the Hawaiian Islands or the French Polynesian Islands you will be glad you did it on a cat.
    Ok until next time,
Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii!

Be aware that Lagoons are notorious for sailing like shit. Like a brick. And it's no wonder if you look at their design. Wide hulls = low performance. Then there is the cardinal error of placing the rudder in front of the prop(like wtf. at least on the 2019 model). It's no wonder people say the interior architects who designed this boat build it around the curtains. Yeah, let that sink in for a minute. With this said. 500k is WAAAAAAAAAY TOO expensive for such an old boat. If you're seriously looking in the 500k range you really should have a look into Neel. Otherwise I would check out the 98-2008 or 09 models of Privilege. They have a great build quality, have slimmer hulls and there we're talking like 275-350k for something in the 45ft range.

    ABSOLUTE overpriced JUNK !!
Friend of mine bought a brand new one. On a trip most of the sealing paneling fell off, AC which is mounted under the roof (!)had condensation leaks every where. Bulkheads cracking, Doors would not open since the hull was bend. Diving platform aluminum was badly corroded. The ENTIRE cabin - deck joint de-laminated. On the widest gap you could put your hand in it ! Now the owner has to struggle with the "frenchies" who are very difficult to deal with.
Aside from all that, who likes to be on a boat that has sharp corners every where, hardly any hand rails etc. The interior looks like IKEA TUPPERWARE.
9 !!! Lagoons I knew of where hit by lightning in one year alone in our area, while other boats next to it had no problems.....
