I watched an old Big Z tutorial last night and to see how far you have come is amazing. You still have that infectious positive energy but your skills as a teacher and producer have improved greatly.
Hey, after searching hundreds of creators,I felt you provide the most value to your audience and with the most accurate and no bs tips. Recently discovered your channel so am excited to go through all your content. I just have one request, can you make a video about how to finish ideas and a series on how to progress in learning stuff about music? Pls
Thanks for the video suggestion, I'll definitely keep that in mind. Some of my old videos are pretty bad quality (teaching-wise and video production wise) so I definitely might re-visit some things I've already covered a long time ago with a fresh perspective
dude, thank you so much, i really struggle with my compressor for years, when i apply your tutorial, boommmm this is what i want, once again, thank you so much, hope you and your family always healthy
Thanks for the video! always a fan. For me, the best way to deal with vocals is to do it manual before I even put any plugins, cleaning all noise and artifacts. Every time you use compressor on a vocal it adds "color" to it, some times it will not be the desirable way and plugins will effect the vocal not in a musical way. After you do it manually, you have more control over the "color" and character of the vocal sound.
I clip gain first in Pro Tools. Then use a limiter (just like you in this video) and then normal compression. This way you have the most natural sound and the most control.
After compressing and re-rendering the vocals, I suggest applying direct volume curves to finalize the track. Another tip: emphasize vowels like "a," "o," and "u" in the refrain words occasionally. 👇 Otherwise, your refrain could sound cheesy and boring.
The reason people use vocal riding is because compression has a sound. If your vocals have too much dynamics, relying purely on compressors will result in a more uneven sound.
But isn't a vocal rider just doing compression with arbitrary settings? Pro-C2 allows you to customize those settings more precisely, and doesn't have the "sound" of some (old/analogue) compressors.
@@AutPen38 No riding is automation not compression. Im not talking about the harmonics of analog emulation. Im talking about the sound of having your dynamics squashed.
There sounds like theres some distortion on your compressed version like its too drastic or quick, is that youtube doing that or just something you didnt notice? p.s another super useful video btw, particularly enjoy your graphics to help simplify it all.
i was always confused about the ratio and now it's clear to me , thank you , but the question is a 100:1 ratio compressor is kind of a limiter , am i correct ? so why not using a limiter instead of compressor ?
One question though: that very silent part in the example vocal (the part with the "mouth noises"), how is that one affected by the compressor when it is not above the threshold?
Well, thank god I do it the right way haha, what's the difference between doing that with a compressor and a limiter? I'm pretty sure there is something weird when you do it with a limiter. That's a sick track by the way
Man you should really try Ableton for this style of music. I came from Logic and I'll never look back Ableton Live 12 Suite seems more built for midi and just electronic music in general. I hated Ableton at first.
Use "Mundo Wave Rider" instead of Waves Vocal Rider for much better results. ( fun fact: waves made their vocal rider by ripping off Mundo Wave Rider )

Yo thanks man! The old videos are terrible haha but I'm glad they're slowly getting better over the years
@@BigZMusic Nah bro they still hold up. It could be a cool idea to revisit some old videos and redo them with the skills you have now.

That was incredibly helpful, thank you. And wow, the quality of your videos is amazing!
I've seen other of your videos, but this one explains a compressor so well. Plus it's not an hour long video. Love it. Keep 'em coming.
Big Z never fails to DELIVER!

Great explanation, I wish we could see what's happening with compressors visually like this with our VSTs
Really well explained. 10/10 well done
great video, very good presentation method and clear analysis

Awesome stuff! 🙏
Love Ur Channel ❤
Biz what software are you using in your videos? I want to start singing and it looks great.

Great explanation. Thx
Finally someone explained a compressor
BRAVO!
Some additional processing on the final result, since the way you're compressing it dulls the consonants.. parallel processing with high pass perhaps?
Well explained.
So good.
This guy is a legend.
I always go by ear and feel
Hi Z, didn't you really use any manual vocal recording before or after the compressor? Thanks

Yeah I've just been using Logic for like 15 years so will probably never make the switch. It's like an extension of my brain at this point
Big tanks its very goof
Look ahead eh? That’s cool. I wonder if I have a compressor that has that on it. If I don’t I want to get one.
How come I cant turn on look ahead its grayed out
How do you calculate 120ms gap in the section ?
🔥🔥🔥🔥

MaFeMatiCZzzz baByyyyy🥳❤🔥
Whenever anyone asks what compressors are used for, send them to this video.
Bruh, what happened to the ratio in the end?
hahahaha I've been producing for 4 years, I learned how compressors work today😂😂😂
🙏🙏🔥🔥

😉
this was 6 minutes 33 secs well spent
We don’t need a balanced mix
I dnt knw how long it took you to make this video, I loved *everything* about it. Thank you🫶🏾
clip gain :::
I literally control 🎛️ by automating the gain 😆
