I get the normal smoke making him look around, but for example the smokes when you used the roaming ballista and the smokes after you make him fall from the roaming ballista along with many others didn't make sense to me.

If you stay in the smoke long enough, the map will turn purple. When you exit the smoke, Fatalis will roar. Hope this helps!
In simple, when the map is purple the monster has lost the track of you
