I grew up running the streets with my friends and stayed thru college. I live 3 hours east of DC now but always loved the city. Tip: The museums connected to the Smithsonian are all free. The National Zoo is also free, although there is a small fee to park on the grounds. Welcome to DC.

Don’t buy a car!!!! You don’t need it in DC, and parking is a nightmare and you often have to pay for a permit in your neighborhood. The Transit app connects the metro and bus as well as ride share including the city bikes and scooters to help you get where you need to go either the cheapest or the fastest. It’s so good! I hope you love DC, I really enjoyed living there.

If you are up for a longer roadtrip, you might try Chattanooga, TN aka the Scenic City. We’re not super fancy, but it’s a beautiful piece of the southeast. I would warn you about the heat, but I don’t think it’s much different than DC.

My husband and I have been together for 28 years. He’s my best friend and I think that’s really strengthened our love and our relationship 🌸
Food quality varies a lot in the US if you buy prepackaged deli meat it will last a while if you buy it fresh from the counter it will go off in like 3 days. Also, DC has so many great farmers markets right now they are really amazing, if that is something you are into.
I love how you approach your life decisions based on what is comfortable and best on your well-being. My boyfriend and I don't live together and have that friendship/romantic relationship where we both are so comfortable not living together 24/7. Like you as well maybe one day but for now I like going home after work and being able to relax without having to entertain someone on the spot as I walk through the door.

The deli meat is kinda gross, melbournian here, I travel to LA a few times a year and I noticed that as well and thought ewwwww…. I bought a roast Chook instead haha 😂 I love the Crest toothpaste and random I know but the Q-Tips cotton sticks are so much better than the ones we have in oz 😂 I always bring them home. Totally agree on trader joes, I think it feels more familiar to the produce I’m used to getting in Melbs

That said, people from ‘the`Peg’ are super-friendly people with good souls, but I could never live in that prairie snow. The Swiss raclette place sounds great … please give us the name. My daughter goes to Wash. every 3 mo. from Ottawa & we love raclette in the Winter. It always blows my mind that in Australia & EU, the appliances move with you. Be glad you’re not in Germany, because the kitchen cupboards also move with you! Laughing about driving … I always get confused when I visit Malaysia, from TO … & try to sit in the drivers seat, when I’m the passenger lol... you'll get the knack of it & drive n bth sides ... just takes a bit.

Most people in a new country, new everything would just cling to their significant other due to fear, etc. I love and admire your independence bc TH-cam is inundated with these “couples” that do not portray reality so thank you. I traveled to Europe for one month (from the U.S.) solo and loved it! People were shocked I did it alone. I was not afraid just excited.
