Snoozing is invaluable to new YNABers (like me) in the first month. I set up snoozed categories for monthly bills that had already passed in my first month! It’s worth noting that snoozing a monthly BUILDER target doesn’t change what you’ll need to assign next month to catch up! 😱
Oh, I am SO glad to hear that! Wish I could go back and mention that handy new YNABer tidbit in the video! And good observation on the target types! We miiight be seeing some upcoming changes to targets a little down the road here, so for the longevity of this video I left out the mention of certain target types. But you are correct! 🌻 Hannah
@@YNABofficial New YNABer here! This is exactly what I used snooze for last month. So glad it's February now and everything is unsnoozed and turning yellow or green :)
YAY! Wow, you new YNABers spotted the snooze before I even did! Love so much that it helped you start your new spending plan mid month and not have to worry about those expenses that have already passed. You're lookin' like a pro already! 🌻 Hannah
Welcome back, Hannah!! Love your humor and this was a great video! So far my most-snoozed category is also my #ynabwin. Back in Dec we moved a whole crapton of money around to completely fill up our mortgage category so that we can pay it off in full - BUT - we didn't do it yet. Instead, we've been living for 2 months "without" that money (just let it sit there in the mortgage category) to make sure we can still afford everything else (I got this idea from an older video of yours, as a matter of fact!). Of course, that also meant we didn't need to fund that category for 2 months, so it's been snoozed for Jan and now Feb. So excited to go to the bank and close the mortgage (scheduled for tomorrow!).
I just starting using YNAB and got way too ambitious with my categories. Snoozing has helped greatly so I can ease into my true expenses and work to prioritize my goals.
THAT TOO. I've been overly ambitious MANY a time. This is a really smart way to use snoozing targets-you'll get to those categories one day, but they might not fit the financial picture just yet. Good thinking! 🌻 Hannah
Now THAT is a pleasure to hear! 😂🤣 Thank you!! Doing my best to conceal dark circles and remember to eat 🙃 He is SUCH a joy, we are absolutely in love!! Best true expense ever! 🌻 Hannah
AHH SO THAT'S HOW YOU USE SNOOZE. The yellow pills have always annoyed me when I deliberately over-funded things last month! I've been putting money in the next month to get around it. TYSM this makes so much sense! 😂
I have a total annual target for my Roth. I want to deposit a fixed amount each paycheck. But, because YNAB can't manage bi-weekly target setting, the category shows underfunded until I hit a 3 check month. So I deposit my planned amount and then snooze it. I'd *prefer* a bi-weekly target, but this workaround keeps my brain from having a yellow category meltdown.
I started YNAB mid month. So instead of going back and trying to upload all the income and expenses from the first half of the month, I just snoozed all the categories that were already paid. They are all ready for next month but they aren't reminding me they are "underfunded".
Hey Hannah! Just saw your latest video on managing payees. I had requested it in the comments on this video. Very nicely done. As always. So are you going to go out on a limb about toolkit for YNAB extension? If you do, one of the features that I think a lot of people would appreciate. Is turning on goals/target column for each category. As well turning on the goal total when you click on all your categories. This was a game changer for me, and having confidence that all of my goals/targets added up approximately to my monthly income. Sure I could’ve written it all dowwn and done it with pencil and paper but it was so much more convenient to be able to see the total and then tweak individual category goals until it fit my income. Hope that makes sense and again thanks for being a mom
Oh Hannah. Missed you terribly. You’re one of the best things about YNAB. So funny and smart. If you’re open to requests? I would love to see one about managing pages where you do the renaming. Not sure if I have the protocol right and also how to automatically categorize. Expect there are a lot of us that don’t know how to use that properly. Plus, and maybe this is verboten but tool kit for YNAB has some super cool features. The one I just started using is the goals features and yes, I know. Goals are now targets. But just like you, I would add my target to the name fields for a category and that kind of worked. But if you turn on goal total and also goal column in toolkit for YNAB. You can first see if all your goals/targets for a month is reasonably close to your monthly income!! And you also can tweak your goals bit by bit until things do fit. And you also then see the goals in a column on your budget. Probably too much information. Again we really love you. Keep doing the videos.
Plus one more thing. If you decide to test, drive tool kit for YNAB, on my Windows laptop, I could not get the Firefox extension to work. But it worked just fine with the latest version of the chrome browser and that extension.
I use the snooze for my hair appointment category. My hair dresser cancels quite a bit due to health reason and it saves me money in the long run because I then get my hair done less frequently.
Hannah is back with one of my fav new features. The yellow made me twitch sometimes! Now I've got green everywhere :) Welcome back Hannah, so happy to see you.
This just blew my mind! I’m a seasonal worker so I’ve only been snoozing the things that I’m not worried about funding until I’m back to work in the spring, but I always hated the yellow leftovers on my loan interest (eg) that I intentionally overfund each month… I DIDN’T KNOW SNOOZING WOULD MAKE IT TURN GREEN! You may have actually just saved my life 🤯
Welcome back Hannah! Started snoozing categories a week or so ago for those that I knew I wouldn't be able to fund at all that month, but hadn't thought to do so when already funded at some point! Great tips and examples!
This really helps with our day care bill. It's $13/day, but we're billed monthly so it varies between 20-24 days/month. We budget for 24 days (the highest bill we would get) and then any "leftover" we snoozed and assign to another category.
Smart! Pretty much the same we do for our electric bill! Budget for the top and snooze when it's anything under. But also... ... did you say $13?? A DAY?! Where and HOW?! 🌻 Hannah
@@YNABofficial Canada! Getting down to $10/day average goal with massive federal funding. It was over $1000 just two years ago and is still over $12-1500/month for private/unlicensed.
😅 Ahhhhh, I see. Same! But, it's a good reminder at the start of each month to review your budget and manually snooze those categories again for the month. If I automate things *too* much I can easily slip out of good habits I've formed and stop checking in as much, as only being able to snooze in the current month has it's benefits! Awareness is always key. 🌻 Hannah
Select the category, go to "Edit Target", and you should see an option to delete a target. The category will remain, along with all the money you currently have in it, but it will remove the target. - Ben M 🤓
Great to see ya back Hannah! I never had the "will" to read up on how or why to use the snooze option, but NOW I'm on board and looking forward to snoozing! THANK YOU!
This is such a great feature. I’ve been using it like crazy. Very nice to have a green notification on a category you moved money out of to cover overspending in another category
Welcome back to the funniest YNAB person ever. Have sure missed you, so I’ve actually gone back and watched some of your past video’s just to be able to get a good laugh. Keep up the good work and keep those funny video’s coming. ❤️🌹
I've mostly been using it for savings with a target date where I'm assigning money irregularly. For instance, I'm saving my tax refund and quarterly bonuses for a big purchase. Some months I may not assign anything and then the next month I may assign way more than it says I should.
I love the snooze feature. But I may love this video more than the feature itself! Hannah is one my of my all time favorite content creators. Welcome back!
Another helpful thing is to expand when a target is due. I’ve noticed the app can only go for two years. Even though the website on a desktop can go further, it doesn’t register and adjust my monthly requirement. It’ll be helpful for when driver’s licenses are due, those memberships that can be due every three or more years, or getting ahead on graduation savings.
For things SUPER far out like graduation savings or drivers licenses, this is where I do a little number crunching myself and use a "monthly savings builder" target type instead. For instance, if I want $10,000 to buy my teen their first car in five years, I'll divide $10,000 by 60 months (aka: five years), and set a monthly savings builder target for that category for the answer to that equation: $167. This target type shouldn't expire and I can be confident I'll be on track to hit that goal by the time I want! 🌻 Hannah
