    @AshtonJ704 If you read the description for this video, and all our recent videos, you will see that I always list the camera I shoot with at the bottom of the description.

    The ending stutters due to framerate issues. After shooting briefly in 60P, I forgot to switch back to 24P, hence the jerkiness.

    I finally found a VG20 with lens and wow. This thing rocks. The quality for the price you can get these for is unreal. Thanks for the video and answering my questions on the VG20

  • @TheCameraStoreTV
    @TheCameraStoreTV  12 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    If you are familiar with DSLR videography, I think the VG20 is a fantastic choice. It also functions in auto mode better than all the large chip camcorders, so you can grow into it.

    The 60i mode on the VG10 and VG20 is actually 30P capture. No you have 30P capture with the VG10, and 24P, 30P, and 60P capture with the VG20.

    @fatcat752 We used a Rode Lavalier mic, transmitted with a Sennheiser G3 transmitter. For audio of Meagan, I had a Rode NTG-2 shotgun mic, with a WS-6 Deadcat.

    @videohog222 As mentioned in the video, it is only when using phase detect auto focus that aperture is locked. If you plan to use Alpha lenses in manual focus mode, why buy the expensive LA-EA2 adaptor?

  • @TheCameraStoreTV
    @TheCameraStoreTV  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @white8ass8kika Gain is the video term for boosting the sensitivity of the sensor. In a digital stills camera, this function would be referred to as ISO.

    @nazhif1 As mentioned in the video, the VG20 adds 24P and 60P framerates, a 16MP sensor that is better in low light, manual audio control, a touch screen, focus expansion, and the new AVCHD 2.0 Codec.

    @slow758 Depends on your priority. The NEX-7 is a much better still camera, but it lacks a headphone jack, audio control, and the much nicer video handling of the VG20.

    @fugzed That's true about the manual button, but it's still clunky. I prefer the way it was set up on the VG10, with all exposure controls in the same place. As far as the second record button, I found it extremely difficult to press from the top handle.
    As mentioned in the video, the F3.5 limitation is only in effect when using autofocus with the LA-EA2 adaptor.

    Having done a video on the VG10 and 20, we're giving a pass on the VG30. The kit lens is much improved and I like having the new shoe with an XLR option. Image quality looked the same as the VG20 to my eyes, I just wish they would add some image controls to the VG line.

  • @TheCameraStoreTV
    @TheCameraStoreTV  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The 18-200 is a pretty good super zoom, but the NEX 24 & 50mm lenses are some of the nicer primes out there. If you want a few primes at a good price, grab a Nikon mount adaptor and find some old manual focus AI lenses. That's what I do when using NEX camcorders.
    Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

  • @WikipediaLover94
    @WikipediaLover94 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you! I've been doing research and I think I'm gonna pick up the VG20. I don't really need the power zoom or option for on board XLR. I prefer only to use fast primes and if I need XLR's I would pick up a H4n or something of the sorts. Hopefully the VG40 steps up the game a bit.

    @jamm521 If you have a chance to use the camera, try holding the camera on the top handle with one hand, and press the record button. At worst it's impossible, at best, it's uncomfortable.

    @estrellasdeljaripeo1 For video, definitely the VG20. It has a much better mic, more comfortable form factor, and support for E mount lenses, which will let you auto focus and select any aperture.
    For stills, the A77 is a much better camera.

    So crazy to think this video is from 2011 :\ Around the time I got my VG20 and, well, I've used it ever since. Still using it for TH-cam + corporate stuff alongside an A6300 :D In terms of being versatile, it's awesome comparing this with MKBHD and the footage he got at the time, and just how different your end results are. I wish I got to use my camera in the snow though :P

    Good (funny) review too. Footage of the VG20 looks fine. The camera does have some shortcomings but overall (if I was in the market for a vidcam of in the VG20's range) I would pick one up. I'm also a long time Sony handycam user so I might be a little biased there. :D

    From what I heard and seen the aperture only locks on alpha lenses when using phase detect auto focus. so you actually can use the awesomely wide open apertures of the alpha glass.

    The MANUAL button can be set as a dedicated gain button. It'll be the same way how the iris and shutter are controlled. And that top record button is for the handle held application, and a dedicated record button placed right for the thumb.
    Curious to know tho, you mentioned you can't change the aperture off from F3.5. This only applies to using alpha lenses?

    Are you guys saying that the translucent, mirrorless lens 'filters' out quality? As in, barring a notable amount of light, ergo compromising picture accuracy?

  • @DavidMercer
    @DavidMercer 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    How do you think the video quality compares to the other DSLRs like the 5d (or the m4/3 GH2 hacked)? Sharpness? Low light sensitivity? Latitude in bright light?
    For non-narrative work is the VG20 a lot easier to use than DSLR (or GH2)? I'm thinking here of changing iso/gain, aperature, WB while in the field filming.
    How'd you like it compared to the AF100 (both in terms of quality and ease of use for more run and gun applications)? Or can they be compared?
    Thanks!

    Actually, the VG20 does true 60i and not 30p. A little hint though. You can get 30p on the VG20 by setting the shutter to 1/50th of a second (or lower) while in 60i. The camera is forced into shooting 2 identical fields to make one progressive frame in these cases. The VG10 was true 30p which was great, but the VG20 has a superior image sensor.

    @TheCameraStoreTV JORDAN!! Are the additional few hundred bucks worth it if I'm going to choose the VG20 over the VG10? I really don't mind the option to choose to shoot in RAW, since I just need something to shoot VIDEOS with. I think the only reason why I would buy the VG20 over the VG10 is that it can shoot 24p, whereas the VG10 can only shoot 30p (correct me if I'm wrong). The question is: IS IT WORTH BUYING OVER THE VG10? The few hundred bucks is very crucial. Reply please! :)

    I have the SONY VG-10 and use it for cinematography. It is VERY easy to cut it in post to 24p. I was ticked when SONY after a short time introduced the VG-20(The VG-10 should have had 24p). All and all I've had no problems with my VG-10 and rather shoot off it then a standard DSLR. Had to many people when shooting a film off the Canon 5 ask what we were doing, and reply was shooting a movie, their reply was always well I have one of those cameras guess I can shoot a movie then.

    Judging by the small video sample you provided, I did not see any benefits compared to a regular 1/3-inch or 1/4-inch consumer camera. DOF? Not that shallow. Resolution? Average. Skew and jello? Less than on the 5D/7D, but more than on a small-chip camcorder. Would like to see a comparison with the GH2.
