This is a great presentation. Even in 2018 it is good basic info. Makes better sense than all the other videos on this topic I have been watching over the last few days. Seems Identifying my phone trouble is complicated by the fact that there is a provider for internet and phone and contractor that fixes any faults outside the property. All cables are under ground. And so finding the source maybe from within my property. Inside on the wall is the jack point to be checked. Anyhow, I will persevere to keep my landline. I am old fashioned that way.

Hey Ron, thanks for your videos; really enjoy you and your videos. Please let me say, also, that I do office technology upgrades and moves pretty regularly and frankly, I don't remember the last time I moved an analog phone.

Is there an easy way for a homeowner to test for a short in an interior line between demarc/NID and the wall jack? I plug in phone at NID and get dial tone but no dial tone at wall jack. Have you made a video of testing for such? I have several lines going to the NID.

You could disconnect the wires at both ends and then using an Ohm meter see if one of the pairs is shorted. You could identify the pair but that wn't tell you wehere it is shorted. Sounds like a little wire tracing job good luck Ron

I still have several rotary dial phones in my home. Several years ago my friend and his family stayed here for a week and during their stay the son asked if he could use the phone. Without thinking I directed him to the nearest land line which happened to be a rotary. After 10-15 minutes I went to check on him and found him studying the phone like he was looking for a hidden touch screen! He considered himself to be very "tech savvy" and was too embarrassed to ask for help. It's an ongoing joke to this day!

Yes pretty funny the old tech worked really well and lasted decades compared to what we like to use today but a cell phone is so much more. Have fun Ron

Hey Ron, do you know why the phone wires (to plug into wall socket) that come with phones have the colors reversed? (like a pass-through cable)
I notice one end is RED->GREEN and you flip it and the other end mirrored GREEN->RED

    • @RonKipperDatacomm1

Ricardo Cooper In older analog phone circuits they required that the cord is reversed wired for them to work. You can think of it as transmit to receive. Newer digital phones are not polarity sensitive so they do not care. They still sell them that way as people still have older analog phones. Hope that helps

The phone lines ran on DC voltage coming from Batteries. Just saying DC does not explain what is really going on.
