The length of the Sabine Training scene did not bother me, She had more training in that one scene then rey had in 3 movies. Sabine felt so relatable in this episode with her struggling to fight, move the cup and was even rusty trying to operate the gun turret. Dave knows how to write female characters.
So a note about the Purgill. So the easiest way to understand them is as a literal comparison to actual whales. Their life is to always be migrating to find places to feed/refuel, breed and find places to shelter in the migrations. And the purgil do that in space rather than the ocean. As to why they are particularly at this planet is yet to be fully revealed but assumptions says they know this to be a place to jump between galaxies. So this planet maybe be like a home ground for them
If you look back to Rebels, Ashoka already began to act a bit less let’s say “bubbly and sarcastic.” That was before any revelation of Vader. Also, if you think back to her time with the Ghost crew it was mainly with Kanan and Ezra. Even, then her interactions were taking them to a temple and coming in to save them from inquisitors. She even left for a bit after first sensing Vader and that was even before she “left” afterwards. Her interaction with Hera was to basically give her info and instructions from the rebellion. All of this is to say I guess I’m not sure what kind of close bond or warmth she ever showed the crew. Her “crew” was the 501, Rex and Anakin. I just am not bothered by the portrayal. Also, Lucas has talked in the past (as far back as ‘83 in a “Making Return of the Jedi” book about all living things having the force. Yoda describes it this way in ESB and even Luke in TLJ. Do I love the idea about Sabine suddenly making “rocks float”? Not necessarily, I just don’t think anyone can say that this is a retcon or new information.
kanan simply taught Sabine to be proficient with a lightsaber. this was never meant to be anything more than what was on the tin. here is how to use this weapon without slicing your leg open because you are doing it wrong. He taught her enough so should use it, which he did and thus ended their lessons. that was all he set out to do. as for why they haven't mentioned him yet, i believe is because they are already adding references to things that no viewers know about like the relationship between Ahsoka & Sabine during the missing 10 years, plus adding new characters and plot threads, plus for those who haven't seen rebels (and who don't know anything about it) its a lot. adding a reference to kanan means they have to explain who he is, although if ever there was a point to mention him it would have been when jacen said he wanted to be a jedi, they could easily have added "like dad" but i suspect they didn't since its pretty common knowledge that jedi aren't supposed to have attachments and having wife/girlfriend and a kid might be a really big WTF?! moment for a lot of casual viewers.
I have been thinking about it, what these first few episodes are is not what the series is going to be about long term. Once they make that jump to the other galaxy there are no more rules, what this series will be is everything after that jump. I hope these first few episodes are just the calm before the storm.
I believe that Ashoka being so disconnect is a character flaw she has picked up since discovering that Anakin was dark vader. something she blames on attachment. She saw the greatest Jedi she has ever known turned into a monster because of the depth of his feelings for Padme. So i believe She is cutting herself off. I believe that is why she walked away from Sabine. It is actually a pretty established things that Masters and apprentices actually develop a force bond which ties them together. i believe in the Ahsoka book she talks about being able how she used to be able feel Anakin in the force through their bond. I think when she started feeling Sabine that way she freaked out and cut her ties and has been trying to emotionally shut herself out from everyone and everything. She is scared of those attachments and how they were able to change Anakin so much into a monster that she couldn't recognize. if you notice Rebels Ahsoka was more mature and serious but she wasn't close off like she is here. I believe that possibly in the anakin episode that is suppose to come, whatever happens to her in that will break the wall she has been trying to build to keep her safe. She will have to learn that giving into your attachments like Anakin did is obviously bad but closing yourself off and going way too far in the opposite direction is equally bad for you. Filoni likes to give characters traits and flaws that they can work past. Already, in my opinion, just having taken Sabine back on as her apprentice has warmed her up considerably than what she was like in the first 2 episodes. Just look at the smile she gives Sabine when they see the whale its near radiant for her or the pride on her face when Sabine shoots down the fighters after them, or even her reaction when Sabine tells her what Huyang told her about her potential, she was clearly not happy. matt: I dont think that Ahsoka is being/acting superior. i think she is trying to channel Master Sinube, the jedi master that taught her patience and who curbed a lot of her impulsiveness. traits that Sabine very much shares with her younger self.
Sabine leaving the ceremony is meant to show she feels unworthy of being celebrated because the real hero is doomed somewhere. Ahsoka was consumed by fear, abandoned others, questioned literally everything that happened in her life irrationally, leading her to be even more closed away, and leaving Sabine this way, without a purpose. Ahsoka sees how it makes things worse, redeems herself, and this eases the weight on Sabine who is able to be in a better place to make decisions. The war with Thrawn was always gonna happen, and couldve been prevented if not for Ahsoka and Sabine's trust issues and bullishness, but like Sabine's arc in Rebels Trials of the Darksaber, they see it as it is now and help each other move forward. This whole show is meant to be a prelude for the real story.
The new open is growing on me! Really like it! Don’t always agree with Matt, well technically never agree with on anything with Matt..but yes episode 3 was really short! So were the negotiations…..I loved the episode, really good! Agree with Shin, don’t know much of her but really like her! Only complaint I have with both of you is you two really is that you nitpick stuff that doesn’t have to be nitpick. It’s over analyzing, like when your boss does it.
I also guess I’m not understanding the frustration of not having gaps filled out in Ashokas time frame when that literally what Clone Wars did. Everyone was so disappointed that we never got to see what came of her after she left the Order. The first 6 seasons were about the Jedi but Anakin and somewhat Obi-Wan even more so. Yet they were barely a part of Season 7 for reasons towards the end. Season 7 was pretty much the Ashoka show. Then she pops up in Rebels and we get to check in on her more adult years. Now we get a show in which we see her older adult years. What other gaps are necessary? It’s hard to complain about not knowing about a character when the content is out there. Name a Star Wars character that we have followed more from their youth until there older aged years than Anakin and her?
Genetics work in ways that are very much not obvious from appearnces. things like brown eyed brown haired parents having a blonde haired blue eyed child. that makes no sense from looking at the parents and thats just the basics. how about getting deeper into genetics and have a mother having the genetically recessive O blood type gene (meaning that mom can only give their kid an O gene) and having a child whose blood type is AB. this should not be possible. typically people who are AB get an A from one parent and a B from the other. so having a kid from an O mom give brith to someone with AB should NOT be possible. but at someone someone had a strange genetic mutation and poof now we have an extremely rare gene that gives you AB blood type. and this is just how it works for humans. what happens when you start hybridizing humans and aliens? anything is possible. you can have children who are indistinguishable from one of their parents species. you could end up with a child who looks like they are neither of the species their parents came from. Look at Ligers. they show incredible variation. I've seen an image of a Male liger that looked just like a tiger but it had a Lions mane. that is pretty much exactly what we got with Jacen Syndula. We have someone that looks like one of their parent species in this case Human with the coloration of his mother's species. With Cut's kids, we get more of the opposite, we get what appears to be Twi'lek kids but with strange patches of coloration from their human father. its literally the same thing in reverse. in each case jacen and the Lawquane kids are both near perfect example of a child of soley one of their parent's race (human for Jacen and twi'lek for the Lawqueanes) with minor variations based on their other parent. If one hybrid child can look like a near perfect twi'lek, there is no genetic reason a different child could not look nearly perfectly human. If Cut and Suu were to have another child who knows what they might look like. they might appear human or they might litereally appear to be half human half twi'leck with half their skin looking human and having hair and their other side might have a single leku, and blue &/or pink skin. or maybe they will have kalico or checker board patches of varying skin alternating between human skin tones and twi'lek skin tones. Genetics is mostly a product of random genetic chance. We still dont even fully understand how our genetics determine our appearance. i believe i remember reading that there are over ten difference genes that help determine how tall we are. there are 16 genes determine our eye color! some of these mutli gene per trait genes work together in a codominant relationship, and in other cases some genes are dominant and others are recessive. brown eyes are obviously more dominant than blue and they are also more dominant than green which is determined on a different gene. so someone with brown eyes might have a recessive green eye gene that isn't seen because of the dominant brown. BUT thats not always the case because sometimes the brown eyed gene isn't fully as dominant as it should be and you get Hazel eyes, this is due to another one of those genes having an effect that changes how the brown eye gene should work. so again anything is really possible when it comes to genetics.
Hey guys, great show, and good points. Regarding Marrok, I'm almost certain that Disney is just trolling the fandom. I think that Sam is doing the voice, just for that reason, and by the end there will not be any big reveal; just a generic inquisitor, (The Zero Brother, smh). With Ahsoka I have to agree; she just can't be that happy go-lucky Clone Wars Ahsoka; this Togruta has fought and saw too much evil. I personally like this version of her; to me, from the storytelling point of view, makes a lot of sense. In the other end, Sabine will win the argument is she develops a weak, but evident connection with the force; after a lot of effort and self-discovery. If it feels earned the fandom will get behind her, I hope. Lastly, Jacen's absent of prehensile tentacles is easily explain; (take note Melissa), is like having kids in a mixed marriage - sometimes there's a clear blend, some others it goes one sided. In Jacen's case Caleb's genes were stronger, (at least externally), but hey, he has the green hair, and that for sure he gets from his mom - I mean, I hope, if not this galaxy far, far away is more interesting than I thought.
Matt: While i was really unhappy with you for the way you just kept on harping about Sabine in the first two episodes. i can totally understand where you came from the first couple of times you did your "im a rebel who rides a motorcycle" thing you have no context for them and they are laying out a lot for the characters to do and the short run time of these last two episodes isn't really giving us a lot of time to build those deeper connects yet. I am hoping that will change as we progress as i am hoping the characters will move past their issues and start becoming more emotionally approachable to those who don't already have emotional bonds to them. but it makes sense that you haven't developed that yet.
Live stream was great! The show time is so much better. You guys are really awesome. Fun to hang with. Thanks for letting us join you.

Ah damn I didn't know there was only 8 episodes, hopefully the story picks up and we see Thrawn next episode then. Setup's looking crisp btw Matt
hahah thanks!!
i believe both Ahsoka and Sabine call him Who yang which is probably appropriate since he was dr. who

seriously you guys must hate me, i dont mean to write such long replies but a lot comes out. sorry guys.
no we love the replies!! we appreciate how much thought you put into it. All valid points and we love the input. Its what makes doing the show fun!
