Same here! Never been lucky enough, unfortunately for me all the banks of streams and rivers near me have pebbles and rocks for banks, nothing sandy. I guess that the reason. I’d love to learn more though, sometimes it’s the hunting that’s the best part, good luck Ray
Finally found my first unbroken point in new years. I went years without but this year I've found about 4 broken points, a pestle, few manos and the unbroken point. I kept feeling like I was going to wake up any moment lol. I was starting to think I never would find one
Having grown up Sistersville, we use to find soooo many amazing artifacts at the river. Great to see someone documenting this! Now to binge the rest of the channel!

I have grown up around the mounds in Central ohio, spent many hours running around looking at them, but no matter how old I get, they never fail to amaze me !

There is a site called Reservoir Stone Mound in my area. Most people have never heard of it but according to the local history, it was the largest stone pyramid north of Mexico. Unfortunately, it was destroyed for the stone to be used in Buckeye Lake during the canal times and later by vandalism. There are still remains, tho according to ODOT, who surveyed it in the 90s . Once I get permission from the land owner, I hope to document what's left . Reminds me of the runway in the video, mostly just relics left. Unfortunately.
Not suggesting this would be a good site, but here is a story told to me by my relative, a building contractor who was constructing a home in Racine, WV. They kept uncovering Native American artifacts. One evening, the home owner was examining the progress in the home, and the lights kept going out. He looked through a window and saw what appeared to be an Indian. I know how crazy it sounds. Had the story not come from people i know to be honest and trustworthy, i would dismiss it.

Hey buddy, I live in Owensboro Ky and back in the 90’s an Ironworker I worked with he was a mussel fisherman and he pulled up a tusk from a Woolley Mammoth!! I kid you not. And a few years later he pull up a skull of one,,, they were both out the Ohio River just a mile south of downtown Owensboro.

I’m from Miamisburg Ohio and it has one of the two tallest mounds in the eastern US. You may have heard of it or perhaps visited it. What many people don’t know is the downtown of Miamisburg was at one time a large ceremonial platform overlooking the Great Miami River. It was made of clay and some of the buildings in town were made of bricks from that clay. Love your channel.

I’m familiar with the area that you hunt for points. I used to deer hunt outside of New Matamoros and my wife’s grandparent’s farm was near Williamstown West Virginia. Keep up the good work.

Lots of piles of rocks in some of the wooded area here in Atlanta. I've never considered them to be anything ancient. Left over rifle pits from

Thanks Stan! I’m not positive that’s what they were, but being on a small flat on the side of the hill like that, I’d say it’s probably graves. Maybe a family cemetery from 1,000 years ago.

Just wondering about the compass orientation of the road.
Excellent historical and archaeological video! You do a great job of exploring an ancient site. This is VERY similar to the Newark Earthworks - Circle : there’s a very large circular earth mound / wall that is like a castle moat surrounding what I believe was the village. This makes sense as a protective barrier from animals and other tribes, even blocking some weather - winds and snow perhaps.
In Cancun: there is a place called Tulum that I visited - huge pyramids for the sun and moon and carvings but the most interesting part is the wall (all stone) that surrounds the small city : it has one ingress and egress opening : the entrance only tall and wide enough for one person at a time.

Thanks for the adventure! Interestingly, it is recognized that the current Ohio River from Pittsburgh PA to Cairo IL did not always flow as it currently does. The current river is comprised of various ancient stream beds which typically flowed northward. The Ben Run Ruins are at a division point of the current Ohio. The ancient streams and their watersheds divided at that point such that the waters to the east flowed to the east and north toward the Pittsburgh area and on to Lake Erie. Additionally, the waters west of Bens Run flowed westward and somewhat northerly at one point. It was not until later in pre-history that the Ohio (known as the Allegheny in our early historic times) Valley was formed with its current watershed and flow. Perhaps this info will shed light on the significance of this site. Again thanks for the video!
That had to have been long long before humans made there way here, these valleys are cut deep.

Cool bottle. Im upriver on the muskingum in zanesville. Was poking around looking for anything in a bit of washed out hillside on my place. No native artifacts but did find a green coca cola bottle dated Christmas 1923 Cambridge on the bottom... Sticking right up out of the ground. Wasn't even visible just last week. Poked around looks like an old dump I didn't know it was there before... Can't wait till I'm not so busy and I can start digging out some more goodies

As a fellow West Virginian, I've been watching for a minute and rarely comment. I find education and amusement in every episode. But, that comment about Chester had me in tears! I still haven't found out why he walks like that. I'm guessing it was a Yankee bullet. But, I digress...thank you for doing what you do and keep up the great work.

Fort Ancient State Park in Warren Co. (think Kings Island) has many types of stone pavement, mounds, calendar, and more. Extremely nice museum there also. Every County in Ohio has yielded at least 1 Clovis point!

Very cool and informative video. I now know that I too have a Hutchison bottle. Found it years ago at an old forge site on property that was originally deeded to a revolutionary soldier. I also found an ingot of Babbit that the blacksmith would chisel off pieces to melt down and pour for bushings.
Thanks Much! Those bottles are hard to find around here, usually just pieces. I’ve worked with babbit before, helping with old oil wells. I find it on the river a lot
We've got several places like this in North Georgia. Well known are Alec and Fort Mountains and Little Mulberry Park. Possibly these were ancient observatories. There is usually a lack of artifacts within the confines of these enclosed sites suggesting that they were used as ceremonial/religious areas as well. Thanks for showing these sites. It truly is fascinating. Collecting artifacts got me interested in their history and I enjoy finding these sites myself as I've located several in my county. I've found rock walls and sites with numerous stone heaps throughout the woods. The professional opinion on stone heaps is that they were some type of marker but not a grave. Upon excavating the heaps of stone no skeletal remains are located and rarely any artifacts underneath. They could possibly be a grave marker. All stone heaps in my area are on the sides of hills, associated with visually appealing landscape and are usually surrounding or along a spring head or small creek. I've located 3 rock walls that seemingly go nowhere but are cool to check out nonetheless.

For what it's worth, my guess is the stone walls could've been for ceremonial purposes and the stone piles on the hillsides could've been related to the ceremonial stone wall. Maybe the Chief and other elders would be on the wall and the lower leaderships would each be where the stone piles were. But I don't know, that still seems kinda off. But I could also see the structures being used for more religious/spiritual purposes. But also, I could maybe see the wall and stone piles being used as defensive structures. But I can't figure out which side of hill they would be defending, considering there was perhaps a similar structure across the river on the WV side. It's all so fascinating!
Also, it does bother me that nothing is being done to preserve the stone wall and stone piles that still remain.

I love your videos, comedy, excitement of discovery & sharing of history all in one nice package. Your editorial cuts are classic, gotta love 'em! It's a great distraction of other events going on in the world today.
In regards to what that "runway" might be what is it's directional orientation? I was thinking to myself that it might be some sort of ceremonial procession walkway. It could be intended to depict the procession of the sun, the seasons or perhaps some sort of lore about the direction from which their ancestors came to arrive in that area? It could've also been some sort of lookout place or a boundary marking between different communities, what they perceived as the land of the living/dead or something else entirely.
I'm spitballing here so don't take any of it for gospel! lol
Hey, your guess is as good as any.👍 I doubt anyone will ever know. All we can do now is try piecing things together. The platform runs North and South. The Ohio River you can see below. Wow!! Scott, that blue bottle with Frank Kuehne on it was an awesome find!!. I have a Sistersville Wva Frank Kuehne but never knew what it was. I figured it was a soda before the coke plant was there. Thanks for the input.

Also the bottle i have that has Frank Kuehne on it is just like the newer coke bottles with the metal pop tab on top. The one you found must be from the beginning an rare.

I live just outside of Marietta,Ohio. I’ve found a lot of nice points every since I was a little kid walking plowed corn fields! There’s a lot of mounds around where I live and an small creek not far away with a cave and a mill ground rock where they cracked nuts and things ! Really enjoy watching your video! My guess is those rocks and mounds are biblical to the Giants! Been a lot of claim to giants bones in the mounds !

There are similar “small mounds” that I recall finding out in the woods and hills outside Paris Landing, Tennessee. I have always thought that they were burial sites. Up on top of hill in a pine thicket on property my family used to own. I have since always wanted to go back there and try to get permission to investigate further. I was way young then. Land Between The Lakes.
I think there’s a lot more out there than people realize. Erosion can take a toll over that many years.

Trackrock ruins (not the petroglyphs) on top of the mountain in Towns County, GA are similar but not as strewn. I have not been to see them, but there are videos. I enjoy your channel and have learned a lot from your videos. Thank you!

Usually when you find piles of large stones in the woods it’s where farmers cleared them out of their fields for planting. Not sure how true it is, but heard it several times on different TH-cam videos of the same genre as yours.

Interesting on the stone runway. I understand that "fences" were done that way in the early 1800's. Sheep and such would not cross over it even just at 3 ft. high.

Hello, Love your videos! I am about to read the article, but wanted to say mammoth bone have been found on Ohio, don't know about Mastadons. Also, when you were talking about the "tall tale" of the men who were digging and said it sounded hollow and the ground was going to give way....I thought, pyramid. Like the Mayans and Aztecs.

The giant fish at the damn story is a good one. I’ve heard that about giant catfish at Lake Texhoma,the size of those wagons. It was the same story they were big enough to eat you. And that they would charge ducks on top of the water and pull him under.

Hey Scott, I found my 1st artifact. I was working in my garden 2 days ago and laying right there was a dart point. We have a pretty good sized creek running though our property and thanks to you and your info, I will be building a sifter box and hitting it hard this spring and summer. @@cleggsadventures I spent a couple hours digging in an old bottle dump that appears to date from the early 1900's to the 1970's. I found six old mason jars (the earliest dating to around 1920), two license plates (dated 1934 and 1936) and a cool old iron stand.

There's a bunch of nice Indian burial mounds scattered throughout south central Ohio that most people don't even know about. We used to hunt points in a farmers field that was directly beside one of those mounds. I think the Indians used to pick the big open fields in between hills for their home base. No way anyone could ever sneak up on them in those locations, usually only one way in and one way out.

Lol yea I’ve heard theirs catfish big as Volkswagens in the Kanawha and Ohio river 😂those piles of rocks you’re seeing on those flats are because those flats used to be farmed the early settlers would pile the rocks up to make plowing easier nice video

@@cleggsadventures yea my family owns couple hundred acres and has for generations in Putnam county wv every flat has piles of rocks and stones believe it or not those hillsides used to be farmed back in the old days my papas and great uncles from the depression told several stories about hauling rocks with a horse and sleds to get them out of the fields any piece of ground a horse could get over they farmed it those were some tough old son of guns 💪 and women

This place could be a burial ground of giants. Isn’t that what’s been found inside of some of the larger mounds? That’s what I thought of when listening to the part about it being hollow underneath.
