I can only hope that in the long march of history, true brilliance like this doesn't get lost beneath the avalanche of mediocrity that is commercial pop music. Mastodon deserves to be in the same league as Tool, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin. Their music is a spiritual and emotional experience.

This is better than all of the aforementioned. Been a Mastodon fan since they were just a local band in Atlanta. Some epic metal came out of that Y2K era Atlanta scene that never saw the light of day. Something Left After Misfortune and Simple Sick Device are two that come to mind I wish I could resurrect. Regardless, Mastodon reigns and I can’t be sorry about that, they have always been musically exquisite and this album is truly perfect.

@@pecannny1443 Yeah lol. But yeah. Mastodon continue to be a breath of fresh air. Especially compared to other modern metal bands. Like Trivium and Dream Theatre etc. I just hope they finally explore their psychedelic influences more. Brent Hinds is a huge 13th Floor Elevators fan. And it really shows in songs like Joseph Merrick and Pendulous Skin. I'd love to see them do a psych metal album.

This is probably as good as soft Mastodon can get along with Cold Dark Place EP. It's crazy when Brent cracked his head open back in 07' their riffs started shifting with this album. They got way more intact with their emotions in the music. Some people don't like that that happened. You gotta admit that 4ths riff before brent starts singing "Crack the Skye" sounds like you are marching to heaven.

Although I really like their heavy riffs and everything, the more dreamy and spacey Mastodon songs were what brought me into them, songs that played a story in front of your eyes, that seemed coming from far far away, from a distant world, so to speak... This one is one of those, a masterpiece in and out.

Most prog metal that I know of is inspired by the likes of Dream Theater and that whole style. I enjoy What Tool and Mastodon are doing quite a bit more than bands like Dream Theater or Shadow Gallery. There is virtually no self indulgent wanking going on in this music.
