Nestled in the scenic hills of the Western Ghats in Kerala, Malampuzha Dam is the largest dam and reservoir in the state. Built post-independence by the then Madras state, this impressive structure combines a masonry dam with a length of 1,849 meters and an earthen dam with a length of 220 meters. Standing at a height of 355 feet, it crosses the Malampuzha River, a tributary of Bharathappuzha, Kerala's second-longest river.
The dam's reservoir spans 42,090 hectares and supports a network of two canal systems that provide irrigation to farmlands and drinking water to nearby villages. But Malampuzha Dam isn't just about its engineering marvels. It's also home to the Malampuzha Gardens, South India's only rock garden, crafted by renowned artist Nek Chand. The gardens feature vibrant rose beds, a freshwater aquarium, boating facilities, and a children's park, making it a popular picnic spot.
