The Disco sport is much cheaper feeling inside; lots of hard plastics which the Explorer Platinum uses soft padding & leather. Land Rovers don't become luxurious until you step up into the full sized Disco or into the Range Rover Sport, which then ventures into ~$80,000 territory.

Because it's the Platinum edition so it has a super nice interior. Did you even the watch the review? It has massaging seats for crying out loud
***** ok well that's your opinion buddy. You can think it's 20k overpriced if you want. Here's a fact for you though (not an opinion): if you want many of the features that this car offers (such as the massaging seats) from a more prestigious car (BMW, Mercedes, ect), you're gonna pay a LOT more than 55k. And again, that's a fact, not an opinion.

If im going to dump 55k on an explorer, make it look different from a regular explorer. Kinda like when you buy a yukon denali, it looks different than a regular yukon. Also, how are those front lights legal in california? The law says no reflecting headlights that have any blue should be allowed. Theyre blue and not projector beams, so how did they pass it. Where i live, i have strict cops everywhere so it has me wondering
My dad has a 2016 explorer sport, and its awesome. Its the bronze/orange/red color and has all the black accents outside (grill, lettering on the hood, door handles.
I love the Platinum. I'm a salesman for Ford Dealer and the whole Ford line is amazing. I've sold a couple of these. Fantastic cars.
How is the reliability?
Very nice review. Explorer now is a very nice SUV, with the Ecoboost it's fast and smooth. You can't get the Ecoboost in all the trim levels which I think it's too bad. The Explorer is now the choice vehicle for many police departments including the California Highway Patrol, so you know this is going to be a durable vehicle. As far as the MPG when tested they don't thump down on the accelerator like you are driving. Smooth acceleration will improve the mileage.
I have driven a bunch of the 2014 & 2015 Explorers and I loved them. Sometimes a little slow taking off, but still very nice. I do really like the new refreshed look they have now. Definitely would have been nicer if Sync3 was in at least this top trim or it would at least include a free upgrade once available, especially for the money one is putting out for the Platinum.

Is this the best selling suv in America? If it is I can see why. Best bang for your buck. If I'm in the market for an suv, I'm definitely considering it although the gas mileage does suck.

I love my explorer! and I paid 48k not 55k! it has way more features than what I would get in a Beemer or audi.

14 mpg is really low even for a v6 SUV
real world driving, 10MPG city + highway combined
My dad has the sport version of the same year (same engine) and it gets around 20mpg real world mpg
It's awful. "Ecoboost" and it gets worse gas mileage than something with a v8

It's crazy to think that this car has a 0-60 time that is about the same as a 2015 Mustang V6. That just goes to show how much Ford is neglecting the V6 this generation :(

I would take this over the other Suv you have tested.
This is a pretty cool SUV but I would like too see cooler and more rarer cars. Don't matter if they are older. That would be better. Still do some new cars but I hope you can mix it up a little. But you do a fantastic job on the reviews.
Which one has more 3rd row space, CX9 or Explorer, with 3 person bench. Both of these are super nice luxury wise but can't decide which one

Good review, I had one for a few days to try out as well. I was glad it doesn't have the Sync3, that system is pretty ugly and not as easy to use I would say. Too bad about the front and rear of this vehicle, they really didn't do a good job with this refresh.
Does the 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum have the right stuff underneath to be a real off-road beast ? Is the four-wheel drive desert & mountain ready ?
My dads 1999 Chevrolet Suburban lt, with the 5.7 vortech v8 will get 14 in the city if driven conservatively enough.
a 6.2 Sierra can get 14 in the city
Does ford really think people still use a compass that they have to put it front and center in the dash,???
I can already see the leather wrinkle behind your back, those gauges are boring as hell, you lose a seat in the second row of seats, and get 14 mpg.... my SUV seats 7,leather is nice and tight, the gauges are all digital and smooth as butter, and I get 19 city 31 highway with a 3.3 v6 290hp. guess what it is? anyone paying 55k for a Ford, especially this one, is insane.

Its funny because I was just thinking about my experience test driving both. I can tell you if you are looking for space the Flex is far better. My needs changed and I didnt buy either but thats my opinion.
I prefer the look of the Explorer but its not as practical as the Flex.

If you won't believe me, I'm actually 6 feet tall (you're 5'9), I still would fit in any roomy car whether it's front or back.
And BTW, I'm surprised that from June 1st to today you haven't thanking anyone but the press car givers (You have done an entire month of press cars.), so why wouldn't you do other cars from Tom Henry Chevrolet, Harrison Auto Sales, etc. It's OK, you can do more press cars. Speaking of press cars, do you think you're going back to press car status on the Friday Mustang update like you did before?
I will be mixing in some stuff from Harrison Auto Sales later this summer along with reviewing more privately owned cars again. I actually won't have another press car until August so the weekly updates will be in the Mustang for the next month.

In my country you cant afford the "basic" ford explorer for $55k, the basic version in here is the explorer limited and it costs $65k.
Wow how much of that stuff is not on the base model. Assuming lots of it considering the 20k price difference...

Nice review of the Explorer. No way I'm paying 54K for an Explorer, in any trim, but something to keep in mind when these start showing up on the used market. Have you tested the sport trim versions of either the Escape or Explorer?
Which one is nicer luxury wise, the new cx9 or this platinum explorer?

2015 Chevrolet Tahoe has more space more luxurious and is cheaper why is this 50k?
for 55k, I would go for a Lexus NX 200t. More luxury in my opinion.

Loved the review and I love the car but I don't think I would refer to it as a luxury SUV, it's still a Ford. I will admit I like it a lot more than any previous explorer though.
