  • This program is a journey back in time to when Tasmania's wild river valleys were being logged for the valuable Huon pine. We hear from men who were there in the 1930's, 40's and 50's when transport was by rowboat.

    Crews worked in pairs back in the day. Most axemen were ambidextrous but funny thing was, the father would be right handed and the son would be a left hander or (cack handed!) My grandfather was left handed, my father, right handed and my elder brother was cack handed! All axemen. Well, my brother only really thought he was cos the old man discovered a thing called a chainsaw in the early fifties. Worked the southern bush, hardwood though, not the pine. Great video Garry. You should be bloody knighted for preserving history!
