Following on from my last video on the chords to 'Work Song', today's lesson is on ideas for soloing over the chord changes. Leave me a comment if you have any questions.

Nice lesson. I like lessons on jazz standards. It's the best thing to learn to play jazz in a context. Thanks a lot Andy

Andy---- you sure have converted me to using the Freeze. I have one a while ago, but I never really grasped the potential until I came across your videos. Thanks again

It's such a good practice tool. Have you heard Bill Frissel using it?

I've heard Bill Frissel before but not with Freeze so I will check him out. He's a great guitarist.@@jazzguitarwithandy

Great follow-up to your previous lesson Andy! I love how you break your song lessons into these two fundamental parts of chords and harmony first followed by solo ideas. I feel I am getting a much more in-depth lesson on the song. Thank you for sharing your software information with me! I really look forward to using these new tools. I hope my e-mail response made it back to you. I have found that initial e-mails from folks not on your contacts list sometimes have a tendency to go to a trash or spam folder. Thanks again and Best Wishes!

Glad you got the email. I will check my spam. I used to do everything, but think it is more focussed if I split it into two .

Only just clocked your channel. Within 5 minutes, (and after many years) the brain finally took over from the fingers and all the lights came on. Of course now I'm stuck with an F drone in my ears. If ya still running your online sessions can you advise on soloing over South African marabi jazz on F C G7 C progression and in general how tight/loose should you hold the pick; especially on Django tremolo's? Thanks for turning the lights on!

Hi Karl, thanks for the comment and glad to have provided some help. Have you got a link to the piece you mention?
In terms of pick grip, it should be loose and relaxed, even when doing tremolo. Try to avoid tension in either hand at all times. I'd work on playing 16th notes to a metronome at a very slow tempo, with a loose grip and relaxed wrist. It won't sound like Django's tremolo for a while, but you need to be able to do it slowly and evenly to begin with. I always encourage my students to have a loose grip and I would prefer they drop the plectrum sometimes than have a death grip! Holding onto the plectrum too hard will make your notes sound tense and possibly lead to physical problems further down the line. Best wishes, Andy

Jazz guitar with Andy . Thanks for prompt reply. Loose grip, brilliant - I had kinda discovered this by accident on the tremolo but good to know and am applying that “loose grip” to all my playing now. Township swing, very simple progressions, Prince Kupi on Mahamba Uzobuya (Zulu for Go away and return) is one of the best. Have a listen and Finally down to business, can you do, one to one lesson online Zoom/Skype. Cheers.
