It’s his job to overcome typecasting. Will Smith was the Fresh Prince. But he took whatever role he could, legend of baggervance, six degrees, etc to show his range until he landed Independence Day and bad boys. And then he became typecast as an action star and had to counteract that with Ali, Pursuit of Happiness, etc. It’s an actors job to work their image and take roles that play against type. Tobey spiraled out of control because he didn’t want to be Spiderman anymore. Look where he’s at now.

Not sure how you perceived my comment as negative when it’s simply reality. Nothing is freely given in this world. Especially the dirty and toxic environment of Hollywood. If he wanted to remove the stigma of the Braxton role he needed to work harder and take roles that went against type. That’s just a fact. Denzel went through it. Will Smith, Regina King, etc. The list of actors of all persuasions is long and arduous. Robin Williams. Jim Carey. Or you can go the Samuel L Jackson route and make a lengthy career out of playing the same character. But it’s still your job to build your own brand.

Mainly because in the “black” community we all personally know a Braxton in our lives. Aka a nerdy light skin brother. Me being fair skinned myself I can understand his point so well. Always being seen the same by everyone. It’s similar to how in the “Black” community we will always see Tisha Campbell as Gina from Martin. She could never be anyone else in our eyes. Are actors stuck on personas or are the ones who have the ability to make anything happen not making it happen, i.e., casting directors.

I totally understand how Chris feels. The thing is those shows were our getaway back in the day. The characters were like family to many black households, so it will be hard to shake these characters when they had such a huge impact on black culture. I have to partially disagree… When Fresh Prince first came out Will was a goofy but very likable character. However, over the course of the show u could see his maturity although he was still somewhat silly he was able to grow. Additionally, his body of work has been more serious roles so I don’t even see the Fresh Prince, I don’t even see the rapper. I see the brilliant actor Will Smith. Sadly, Duncan has been typecast because as good as he was in the Braxton character, the character was one dimensional serving mostly as comic relief and victim of Jamie Foxx’s antics….

Stop it. The character IS a person. The actor merely brings him/her to life. Their job is to open the audience up to connecting w/ that person. It's a little absurd and out of bounds to carry the expectation of the audience to dissociate from an individual whose story they've bonded to emotionally & just happens to wear your face & likeness for the sake of YOUR range and depth as an artist....That's the casting director's job. While the watcher's goal is to buy-in.

@@wtdudley05 that's true and you hit that right on the note since if the jamie foxx show was the only role he had then he would definitely be professionally type casted but I clearly see his logic with how it's being bitter sweet and he doesn't regret it which is a good thing and now I see how chris tucker feels about Friday the same way that chris duncan feels about the braxton character and it was a good thing for both of those guys to spread there wings and try out different roles in their careers.

I don’t think people doubt his acting range, I think he did such an amazing job developing his character as Braxton it’s hard for people to disconnect the two... I always thought if you were angry at an actor for a part they played, or you can’t see past the persona of the character portrayed then that actor did his/her job in an outstanding fashion.

yep, my mom hated jet li because of the character he played in Letha Weapon 3 (I think it was 3) and did not want to watch him in any other movies; I had to really convince her to see that he was just acting and that's not him; and so she watch Romeo Must Die and has loved him since and then she started to give other actors who played bad guys a chance in other movies. She was so funny!
