    After taking a long break from strait razor shaving, I recently decided to start again. I am so tired of the disposable nature of everything I wanted to return to something that was more of a relaxing process. I have watched several of you videos and find them excellent. I have ordered a the stones you suggested and am looking forward to bringing my razor back up to a good edge. Thanks for your excellent videos.

      Donald, you are so right we live in such a disposable society. Straight razor shaving is more relaxing with its ritual and process making it almost meditative in practice.

    Very nice Eric. I've narrowed it down to 3 stones myself and 1 of them I don't have just yet. The Shapton Pro 1K for bevel settting, Shapton Pro 8K for maintence and the Suehiro 20K Gokumyo for finishing. The Japanese natural stone that you showed looks like a Suita (pronounced sweet uh) and it's a very good mid range/upper mid range stone. I love my Suehiro stone holders that I have.

    • @AdventuresInWetShaving
      @AdventuresInWetShaving  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Stephen your 3 honing stone choices are all fine stones! ;) Yeah Buddy!
      Glad to find out more about this Japanese Natural stone. I can tell you it's a very hard stone and it took a me a while to flatten. I'm hoping more for and upper range stone, but I'll be fine with a mid range stone as well.

    Great #SREFS Eric. I only have 1 set of honing Stones lol. I have a DMT Dia-Sharp Coarse Diamond Plate, C-WINDY 3K/8K Synthetic Stone, Shapton M5 12K ceramic Stone & My ILR 12k-15k(standard) & it was cheaper $54.00+tax & Shipping. The Diamond plate is for flattening my Stones, I could use it to set the bevel but I use the 3K for that. Eric, Have a Great Friday & a Good Weekend! Take Care My Friend!

    Great video Eric! There are so many good stones that work very well. Right now I have a Norton 220/1000, Norton 4k/8k, Shapton 12k, King 1200, an unknown coticule, the smaller ILR, and a hard black Arkansas. My cheapest recommendation to be able to hone a razor would be to buy a diamond plate and set the bevel with the king 1200, and take it to shave ready with a slurried ILR. The slurry is what will take practice but the edges are fantastic! Keep up the fine work!

      I have the same set of Nortons, how do u like them? Also is the hard black as killer as they say? I definitely agree with the diamond recc. I spent so much time recently doing some spine work on a gold dollar with the nort 220, the diamond woulda been so much more efficient!

    I also like the ILR ultra fine…(12-15000)
    I was using a balsa diamond /lapping film for awhile…But I’ve gone to a 8000/ILR finisher combo and I’ve been really enjoying the edge..
    It’s a smooth but sharp edge that is really easy to maintain.I have the 2.5 x 7 stone.It’s been great 👍

    I currently use lapping film - bevel setter 30 12 9 3 1 micron, sometimes .3 micron to polish...$ 25 plus a flat slab of float glass ...Im looking to get a shapton pro 1.5k and 5k but also maybe some cheaper stones in place of film and only use film in the polishing stage....fixing a blade or setting the bevel can be done but imo it takes too long- after about 20 laps on it you can feel the film is not quite as resistant as when the sheet is brand new. Btw 30 micron=600 grit but actually feels like 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper....also I suspect as you use lapping film the abrasive gets finer and finer

    Great! This was helpful. I am new, and yet to get a good smooth shave. I have tried lapping paper but it is used up before I really learn, plus it seems to attract particles. I think I will choose line up 2 and get each stone as I can afford them while attempting to finish with the higher grit lapping paper.

      Fantastic Idea Pipe Club with the Suehiro 1000/3000 and the Shapton 8000 followed by the Imperia La Roccia 12000-15000 finishing stone you will be all set! Getting each stone as you can afford them is the best way to go and you can still use the lapping film to get the high grits along the way. This is a journey embrace it and enjoy the journey!
