Everyone hates this Sally, but the way I see it Sally is not a specific character. It's just the way the actress chooses to portray her. I adore this Sally. She's so awful that I think I'm in love, and isn't that the strange, terrifying genre that Cabaret has created for itself?
Jane as Sally is brilliant. She's outgoing, fascinating, and she's not afraid of being as flamboywant as she wants to be. She's awesome and incredibly good.
I'm not super familiar with this musical, and I've never seen the movie (I know, I know). However, I found Jane Horrocks' rendition of this song haunting and jarring. Shit gets real here. It entices fear. When you're expecting a perfect-pitched song with perfect timing and don't get it, then your mind starts to panic a little. Someone mentioned that the club represents the beginning of Nazi's coming into power in Germany. It's the perfect match. I bet it was amazing live!!
Learning Norwegian right now I sympathize strongly with him taking down notes “make a pass AT her not AFTER her” 😂 So many “at”s and “etters” where we don’t say anything in English 😭
Thank you!! Thank you for posting the whole thing!! We saw it in NY with NPH's understudy. He was brilliant, but I had a very unhealthy attraction to Alan Cummings..I'm so glad I get to see him in this great role!!
I think Isherwood would have liked Jane's Sally. He thought Liza was too good. I think he said something like: someone that talented would have been famous already. I mean, I love the movie AND Liza, but I like Jane's interpretation, also.
I thought Sally Bowles was awesome when I saw the movie, and then I saw the music and hated her. That's the point. She's supposed to be annoying and oblivious.
No, shes not. She's awesome in all the ways possible. A bit annoying? Yup, but brilliant in all the ways possible.If you think that she's you are wrong.
I liked Liza Minelli and Jane Horrock's performances as Sally Bowles. I mean... I do have a penchant for dramatic, caricaturist performances so I mean, plus I love Jane Horrock.
jane horricks is amazing in this role, totaly how saly should be, annoying and too full of herslef to realise how bad a singer she actually is! so full of self delusion, the stage show os so different to the film and it is so good to see it here, thank you so much for posting xx
I hate this version of Sally. And that is right down to the director. And before anyone sais "You're not suppose to like her" I have to say that I don't agree. It all comes down to how you read the script. To me Sally is a very frightened and insecure woman who hides behind this sort of facade. To me she ruins her life herself because she's afraid that if she doesn't someone else will do it for her. That is the way I read the script, but every director chooses her/his own style.
+Ingrid Herlitz I absolutely agree with your reading of the script, but I think what really pulled this performance together was when Sally repeats the line: "You know what I'd like, a spot of gin..." when she's so beat up that she can't even deliver the line with her usual affectations. I really loved the over the top performance of Jane Horrocks because that mask is very boldly claimed. She's in a cabaret, she's a mediocre performer who's attraction is played up by her how "exotic" she is (the greatest irony of it is that it's a British musical set in Berlin about a British woman who thinks she's "mysterious and fascinating" [Toast of Mayfair, irony again]), and all the insecurities are poured out in her rendition of Cabaret, screamed out instead of sung. There may be other performances which capture equally all the characteristics I've described, but I genuinely enjoyed this performance.
I agree with you but I really like this version simply because to me This sally is at a point where she has actually become the facade . When you pretend to be something for so long you internalise it and it's part of you . I think this is best shown where she sings cabaret and she's not just singing she's shouting it, she's looking for feeling and emotion and can't find any . It's just a different way of looking at the character I think
@TRWolf -- I agree. Granted, Sally should always be portrayed as someone who wants to be noticed and who's convinced that she's irresistibly seductive...but there should also be something faintly pretentious and desperate about her as well. Unfortunately, I think Jane Horrocks is being a bit too heavy-handed with the desperation -- her version of Sally comes across as someone who's really trying too hard to impress other people (and quite possibly not succeeding as well as she'd like).
Interesting take on Sally Bowles. I appreciate the original approach but I think Liza had more charisma and charm, while still maintaining the character. This Sally is just a bit too much like a caricature.
well it's not an accident- the story is a bit biographical bassed on the writings of christopher something something... look up the movie "christopher and his kind" it's on youtube- you will see the parallels ;)
I don't know. I adore Jane Horrocks and Liza respectively, but...as an actress myself, I suppose I really enjoyed Liza's interpretation. She chose to play the opposite, and I respect that. Jane is playing the character as it is written, but sometimes, a spectator wants to see a unique perspective on the role. It is what makes that particular actor's performance so memorable. Anyway, I love Joel Grey and Alan Cumming, and again, they each interpreted their characters differently. Both marvelous.
@JavaJunkie555 If you are going by the movie version..this Sally wouldn't make sense. Sally is supposed to be a mediocre singer that works in a seedy club because she's not talented enough vocally to be in a more high class one. She covers her insecurities and mediocrity with false bravado, brashness and fantasy.
@dolphinofdespair Ähm, cant agree^^ I ever saw it- even in this version- like Bobby is working in the club, cause in the full version of "wilkommen" they say he is^^ Besides, i realy cant stand that Bpbby, but Viktor looks sweet. *g*
"You're not supposed to". Not exacly, idk why people who desagree with us who don't like the Sam Mendes version that the way they like is "the right way". It isn't. It's only different, we hate it, you love it.
Ahhh, I didn't know there were commercial breaks. I figured that they like censored a whole scene because they left out "The Telephone Song" didn't they? then again, I think that's just how Mendes directed it.
Everyone hates this Sally, but the way I see it Sally is not a specific character. It's just the way the actress chooses to portray her. I adore this Sally. She's so awful that I think I'm in love, and isn't that the strange, terrifying genre that Cabaret has created for itself?
Cliff is a disaster bisexual.
Cliff's a disaster.
a disaster
But we love him for it.
Kiss him... kiss him.... do it! (cuts out kiss scene) DAMMIT!!!
Jane as Sally is brilliant. She's outgoing, fascinating, and she's not afraid of being as flamboywant as she wants to be. She's awesome and incredibly good.
I love her

Someone mentioned that the club represents the beginning of Nazi's coming into power in Germany. It's the perfect match. I bet it was amazing live!!
I love her take on Sally! How else would she act if she's been wanting to be a famous actress and has been used and abused countless times?
Learning Norwegian right now I sympathize strongly with him taking down notes “make a pass AT her not AFTER her” 😂 So many “at”s and “etters” where we don’t say anything in English 😭
Wow...I can't believe that there must be people saying things about the two guys kissing...this IS Cabaret! It's meant to be risque!
It is sad that two guys kissing is risqué while straight people are just expressing love.
In the "Berlin Stories" she is eccentric and and not always the most well mannered person.
Jane Horrocks is brilliant.
I can't agreed with you more! She is marvelous! Asolutely one of my favorite Sally Bowles of all time
Thank you!! Thank you for posting the whole thing!! We saw it in NY with NPH's understudy. He was brilliant, but I had a very unhealthy attraction to Alan Cummings..I'm so glad I get to see him in this great role!!

Why did they cut the scene, there was another song number wasn't it?
I thought Sally Bowles was awesome when I saw the movie, and then I saw the music and hated her. That's the point. She's supposed to be annoying and oblivious.
No, shes not. She's awesome in all the ways possible. A bit annoying? Yup, but brilliant in all the ways possible.If you think that she's you are wrong.
@@theprinceofbrazil Nope. The character is not that talented. I'm afraid you're the one who is mistaken here.
@@theprinceofbrazilthere’s no right or wrong answer on what someone else thinks of a character lol
Sally is supposed to be UNTALENTED…from the play, I AM A CAMERA.
does the scene really end at that kiss or did they just edit the scene for tv?
Aaron Palmer idk I wanna know
I used to not like Jane Horrocks' portrayal of Sally Bowles. But I think her performance is growing on me.
Haha... I love Jane, she reminds me at moments of Glenn Close as both Cruella DeVil and Norma Desmond!
Cliff is wonderful
I love Sally’s portrayal
Wow, that kiss was actually really hot o.o
i think they did cut out the kissing scene!!!!!!! wth???
I liked Liza Minelli and Jane Horrock's performances as Sally Bowles. I mean... I do have a penchant for dramatic, caricaturist performances so I mean, plus I love Jane Horrock.
What happens after the main guy kisses the other guy at 3:10?
Well, happines I supposed
very dramatically she says "we could sneak upstairs, later on, if you like!"
I SAW SOME TONGUE THERE!!!
i love the woman playing sally!!!
jane horricks is amazing in this role, totaly how saly should be, annoying and too full of herslef to realise how bad a singer she actually is! so full of self delusion, the stage show os so different to the film and it is so good to see it here, thank you so much for posting xx
I like her facial expression when she says "ooh.. well it's your toothbrush glass!! =O"
what happened with the kiss?! how did he react? :P
Why did they take out "Don't tell MAma"?
I haven't seen the movie, but I love this sally I hope I get to see the movie
Wow, this audience has no sense of humor what so ever. Not a single laugh? Really?
Alan Cumming I love him!

No, that's not the point at all. She's actually more relatable in this version. She uses her "fecade' of "naughty girl" to hide her inner fears.
Ingridienser have you read goodbye t berlin? i think this is exactly the character christopher isherwood wanted
No one in England has her accent. But otherwise I'm liking this!
Jane Horrocks is fantastic.
. . .kinda want to punch Sally in the face. I think that makes her a bit more realistic than Liza Minelli xD
What was that thing at 3:13, why did it cut what looked like a whole scene?
@TRWolf -- I agree. Granted, Sally should always be portrayed as someone who wants to be noticed and who's convinced that she's irresistibly seductive...but there should also be something faintly pretentious and desperate about her as well. just now noticed ludwig is also a chaotic bi
I love Cliff
EXCELLENT !
WOOOO (O3O) that made me laugh bold men in Berlin XD
So cool
Alan Cummings......*sigh*
Cumming*. Bugs the shit outta him when people add an "s". XD
IS THIS THE GUY FROM BREAKING BAD????
Yes. Adam Godley. He's on the Hulu series The Great now. Such an amazing actor.
Please tell me they didn't cut more from that fabulous kissing scene.
Interesting take on Sally Bowles. I appreciate the original approach but I think Liza had more charisma and charm, while still maintaining the character. This Sally is just a bit too much like a caricature.
@BonnyDramaGirl
Really disruptive, wasn't it?
I'm assuming they censored it, because this was a version of the show filmed for TV broadcast.
"Wow this show is pretty cool, Alan Cummings is awesome and HELLO YAOI."
^ My reaction.
People who asked the same question about his freaky leader didn't get a proper answer either.
@snorlax42
Only the loudest laughter is getting picked up by the mics.
@dolphinofdespair
Is there a video with "your" version? Maybee you`ve got a Bobby that didnt make me role my eyes ;)
is this....RARITY?!?!?!
Mudville was near San Francisco, California.
@Bjoshgroban Moulin Rouge took some elements from Cabaret.
well it's not an accident- the story is a bit biographical bassed on the writings of christopher something something... look up the movie "christopher and his kind" it's on youtube- you will see the parallels ;)
Hmm.. Sally Bowles is supposed to be eccentric (prairie oysters?) and she's described as "the toast of Mayfair", hence the accent.
Who plays Ernst? He looks so familiar.
The american dude looks like Ronald Reagan
Both productions I've been a part of use a 2 second-ish fade to blackout there.
Nathan Lawrence nice
What casts?
No, but it sure does help!
Frauline Schneider sounds kinda jamaican....It makes me laugh of as we've been trying to get our english teacher to read a poem in a jamaican accent.
@JavaJunkie555
I am in agreement of that. Some of her characterization choices do seem odd.
I agree completely.
I don't know. I adore Jane Horrocks and Liza respectively, but...as an actress myself, I suppose I really enjoyed Liza's interpretation. She chose to play the opposite, and I respect that. What does she say at 1:46?
"We can sneak up possibly later on if you like." Is what she says.
ditto I like it either. We are doing cabaret at my college this fall. I see sally as a sexy young lady.
This Musical seems to be extremely similar to Moulin Rouge...
holy crap this sally is scaring the shit out of me, definitely not right for th part
por qué cortaron el besoooooooooooooo FUE CON LENGUA Y TODOOOOOOOO paja!!!!

@jerona I know! It's like, kiss-- CYMBAL! CABARET!
i totally agree. she's annoys me.
And she is mistaken. She is NOT Sally Bowels
@BonnyDramaGirl Commercial break. TV version.
@dolphinofdespair
Ähm, cant agree^^ I ever saw it- even in this version- like Bobby is working in the club, cause in the full version of "wilkommen" they say he is^^ Besides, i realy cant stand that Bpbby, but Viktor looks sweet. *g*
@piggibank42 He was impersonating Sally.
poor guy. Id wipe m mouth off too
haha i hate homophobes.
Sally has one of the worst faked accents. It's painful.
That's part of what make Jane Horrocks' Sally so great. Everything about her is fake. Sally's always pretending to be the person she wishes she was.
I really don't like this portrayal of Sally.
You're not supposed to, so she's doing something right. She's a detestable character.
"You're not supposed to". Not exacly, idk why people who desagree with us who don't like the Sam Mendes version that the way they like is "the right way". It isn't. It's only different, we hate it, you love it.

Oops. This is where part four is. xD Disregard my comment on part five. xD
Well, not all of them were, but I think it was definately a preference. Hitler wasn't aryan, after all.
Of course Hitler wasn’t Aryan. He probably didn’t speak Iranian or Sanskrit. The only real Aryans are those who speak the Indo-Iranian languages.
@broadwaylove52 I'm amused by their ignorance.
What?
Lol, my uncles play at Bryanston was so much better than this actuall play!x
Am I the only one who thinks Adam Godley resembles Nick Jonas..?
Erica Bradshaw Now that you mention I can actually see that! It's the eyes I think
