I personally do have one set ship for some characters, but like, I’ll also read fic for other ships too. Do I seriously ship MegOp? Nope! Do I seriously ship MegaSound? Nope! (Only in one specific au I have, but normally no.) Do I ship SoundOp at all?? Nope! But fuck man, I’ll read fic for MegOp, MegaSound, and on occasion when I find one in the wild/a good one, I’ll read MegaSoundOp, even if it’s just Soundwave being Megatron’s emotional support boyfriend/the official third wheel/qplatonic bf + living in the same house as MegOp. Some ships squick me, most I’m like huh. You do you friendo! And half of that is me going ‘hey, some of the stuff y’all make is funky (cool + /pos), so I’m gonna have a lil snack or two as I’m passing the stand. Love y’all.
I wholeheartedly believe multishipping and polycules are the answer to every ship war. Can't decide between Roceit and Anxceit? Anaroceit, next. Cant decide between Sonadow or Sonamy? They're both good, moving on. It just feels so good because people will be arguing over which one is better, but you just know "They're equally good, what's the point of picking?"
I will say this as someone who absolutely adores this solution in most cases and often advocates for it because it is so elegant: Sometimes I don’t like one ship that makes up the proposed polycule even though fandom wide it’s quite popular. If a person likes both ships but agonizes over it being non-monogamous, don’t. Or multiship. If they don’t like a particular ship, then they don’t have to. That being said, some of my favorite ships came out of this: Kataang and Katoph because Katara has two hands. Mainko: Mai x Jin x Zuko where all of them love each other. Lapamedot, the subject of one of my favorite fanfics ever: “Something About Roommates and Girlfriends” My most recent obsession, that I call the Timmycule, comprised of Timmy Turner, his girlfriend Veronica Star, their gf/bf Trixie Tang, his bf Jimmy Neutron, their gf Cindy Vortex, his gf Tootie, and her zucchini Sanjay. And while I shipped them as a polycule without being too concerned with liking any particular microship, Sashannarcy definitely came out of this impulse and for that I’m grateful.
The rarepair pioneering issue is 1,000x more painful when your brain has dragged you so deep into rarepair hell one half of your newest obsession _doesn't even have a canon name._ Or when a character who's never had fic made with them before has a really ambiguous name status in canon, and _you_ have to think of something to enter into the AO3 database to be connected to them _forever._ It's too much pressure for this young fool's heart 😭
Oh boy. This takes me back to shipping Susan Pevensie with the geeky kid from the train station in 2008. The movie never gave that poor boy a name. Some people called him Warren and the rest of us just went with "Ash" because the actor's name was Ashley.
My otp has one of the characters be canonically without a name. Not “they never gave them a name because they weren’t important enough” but “they just. do not have a name.” Almost every single fanfic I’ve seen gives him a different name/nickname

Like we don't get a sneeze and a "bless you" BUT there's a game of backgammon, a slow dance, a scene where one helps break the other out of jail, two kisses (one of which is my profile pic 😁), and one intervenes before the other can get hit by someone threatening them, alas they are still a rare pair because it's a rare fandom and I'm the only one writing fic content actively shipping them. My old OTP (completely different fandom) from a couple years ago got more attention online, and more fics, but way less canon interaction. I think in canon their major interaction was a single conversation where one of them talked about a sick horse and tried to avoid playing cards with their aunt. (And I do mean "their" as in she was aunt to them BOTH since they were cousins, but it was Regency England so that sorta thing wasn't frowned upon then). 😂

Someone had pointed out how me being not interested in x reader fics, but shipping generally sounded like I was aro. I thought about it, but I didn’t fully accept it just then. It took me a couple more years to realize. Now I’m good. Shipping is still part of my way of interacting with media, but I realize that it’s not something I want in real life.

Personally I perfer to project onto a canon character and then ship them with the other character that i like but more power to the self shippers! You guys have way more swag than I could ever have.
“You don’t know me.” “I do know you.” Made me ship Ty Lee and Zuko despite there not being too many interactions to go off of. I just really like Energetic, Good! paired with Dark, Not Good! because it’s just so interesting and cool; pretty much all of my favorite ships include it. Edit: as someone who writes for the _Murder Drones_ fandom, I pretty much just ship the trio together but also have variations of those ships in different fics. Can’t get into a shipping war if I’m a triple agent.

Honestly shipping and fan culture were so influential for me as a young queer person who grew up seeing fragments of myself in my favorite shows but never feeling wholly reflected. When I discovered fanfiction and AUs and the internet it was like something I'd been missing all my life finally clicked into place. It felt so validating to discover an entire community of people who had the same interpretation of a text as I did. Also, as cringe as it sounds, shipping actually helped me to form healthy relationships in my own life as an adult. The pretend queer relationships in media I loved were a better model for connecting with other people than the toxic/codependent dynamics I saw in typical hetero romances (fictional and IRL).

That’s exactly what I’ve been dealing with, like I wanna make some representation for myself but it’s so hard not to ship literally every character ever. 3:56 I accidentally stumbled into a self insert x canon ship once. I was just self inserting along with the story imagining if someone that was basically me was there, and I was like “well he’d definitely wanna be friends with this one character, they share a lot of interests.” Then I imagined them closer and being basically a qpr. I laugh MANICALLY knowing that my technical first introduction to oc x Canon ships, let alone shipping in general was this one time when i was 9 and playing club penguin, the veggie villain mission came out and i managed to complete it and i saw dot pop out of the closet. Something in my Brain clicked. Something that made me go "ok so my penguin just loves her now!" I still draw them occasionally.
Crossover ships are honestly some of my favorite ships imaginable, especially if the character you're shipping's canon options aren't the best people to ship them with. The amount of characters I have shipped with just this one cannot be estimated.

Sometimes, I ship because of the bittersweetness a ship has. Like, my current otp has so much chemistry, but the ending for them is like a Greek tragedy. The care for one another was always there, but the feelings weren't realized until too late. It's like that for a lot of my favorite ships. I don't know why I'm like this lmao😂

I wasn't in the GO fandom when only Season 1 was out, but I've seen some older posts where people legit thought the show was Queer baiting. When i watched Season 1 myself i didnt see that supposed "Queer Baiting" at all. People always think kissing is the ultimate sign or confirmation of someone's love, but that's simply not true. It's SO obvious Aziraphale and Crowley love eachother, because of their actions. Because of how they talk to each other. And ESPECIALLY because the literal author / creator of GO said that they are in love. Explicitly. People are weird.
It was a surprise to learn that people can be possessive or weird about ship they like, or hostile about ships they dont. To me, all ships are inevitably like speculative thought exercises on how a potential relationship might go between two characters. "What is a story that gets these two potentially unrelated characters to a happy ending together?" is a very neat question to me, even if i never write those kinds of relationship stories. Its fun, interesting, and a good prompt to write about, if youre the type to. Shipping is a great thing for fanfic people.
My favorite thing about shipping is watching fandoms tear themselves apart over nonsensical ships that everyone knows deep down will never become canon anyway. And even if they do, they'll probably wait until the last second to make it official.
Same it’s super fun. I saw someone had designed a fan kid for a crossover crackship and I wanted to see if I could make something like that, but was slightly more lore accurate to the newer seasons as the last of the two shows was coming to a close. It was Emperor Belos x King Andrias. The result of my work is now one of my favorite OCs.
I love ships that work well thematically, canon or not. Like say you have a story about societal norms; character A is trying to fit in because they are afraid people will shame them for who they actually are and character B is trying to stand out because they are afraid of being a failure. Them coming together states a new point in the narrative and makes everything so much more interesting. I love ships that just... make sense. Like they have to happen even though there are story consequences.
The aspec shipper just came for my life holy shit I don't even really do a lot of canon/canon shipping like if you don't tell me two characters are in love explicitly I probably won't see it (and even if you do tell me they're in love I'll still probably not really see it lol) So shipping must not be for me then right? Wrong! I get attached to a character and then decide that they still need someone to smooch (or "smooch") and I make a whole ass new character that I can custom-build to be someone I could see smooching that character instead of trying to pick someone from the lsit of existing characters to try to make make sense in my mind And I adore it don't get me wrong, but I'm just here sometimes like "why are you even like this hello"
I personally like ships that have a certain amount of canon behind them. Whether they're a canon relationship or not doesn't matter, but I like ships whose canon banter can very easily be interpreted as flirting. Like Komahina, for example.
You know what's fun? Go back a rewatch a show or movie you haven't seen in decades and see what ships you get out of it when you come back to it. Rewatched something I hadn't seen in 20 years, didn't even care about shipping back in those days and found myself a great handful of ships to enjoy on my own without annoying ship wars. Yes, I have to make my own content, but sometimes it's just nice to have the sandbox to yourself for a change
I have, on multiple occasions, ended up rolling my eyes at the main couple whose beautiful romance we’re supposed to swoon over, then proceeded to swoon over the side couple whose relationship is meant to be comic relief. Okay, you two blandly pretty teenagers/twentysomethings are in a ✨Dramatic✨Forbidden✨Relationship!✨ Whatever. I don’t care. I’m more interested in these two middle-aged weirdos bonding over some bizarre interest that the other characters jokingly make fun of them for.
It's a lot of fun to me personally, so I can't really judge anyone that does it. It's a lot easier to get into the mind of an OC than a canon character and watch them get butterflies in their stomach when they're with or thinking about their love interest

I (a fanfic author) sometimes have the "wheel of fanfic" where I for example put a bunch of names on a picker wheel and whatever it lands on will be the ship. It sometimes helps to spark new ideas and challenges. Harry Potter/Zuko? Sokka/Aang, can I even do that? Gotta try right? The wheel said so and now my fanfic mind is racing!

I have a confession about Splatoon that I would wish to share now that I have found the area to do so, hear me out. My brain made Cuttlefish x Octavio fanfic. The premise of it was that, when they fell down the thingy or whatever in what, Splatoon 3, yeah I think that’s right, that they would end up in the same area and have a tea party on a table-shaped rock. That’s it. Nothing else happened it was just old man yaoi but tea party. If I remember correctly Cuttlefish packed the tea for the Agents or the Squid Sisters or something and just. They just had a tea party that’s it, at least until the point in which the plot of Splatoon 3 progresses beyond that point. I remember an image of Octavio crossing the tentacles he normally crosses while using one tentacle to drink the tea (don’t even ask me how that works with the whole “they die when submerged in water” thing, it’s a mystery and a half), and trying to pretend as if he didn’t care but also he had nothing else to do so. *sorry about how this is formatted text wise it’s just REALLY embarrassing for me to share this. Most of my ships spawn from seeing what other people ship and throwing them at my brain wall to see if I like them too. Except Polyninja. I came up with that one all by myself.
I remember when I was younger I would ship the most randomest ships in the fandom because other people shipped those characters. Did it make sense. No. Was it fun. Yes. Then a few years later I wasn't much of a fan of shipping, I'd be ok with canon ships, but anything uncannon I'd just be like: What? Why? They're cannonically JUST friends why do people ship them? Now I am a casual shipper and ship whatever I want whether canon or uncanon, though I'm quite picky with my ships. With some I'm like, Ok, sure, these two are cute together I guess. BUT with a rair few times I have seen ships that I just love, and love thinking about. This though has only happened like two times, I think. I have a ship where I was one of few who shipped it in it's first season where it was super unpopular (The characters had small but very good moments) but in the second series (what came out late November of 2023 so not too long ago) the two characters Spent most their time together and had a lot of moments together because of that the ship skyrocketed and i was excited but i found out that weirdly enough some of the people who also shipped it from season 1 got oddly defensive over the ship. I'm personally just glad the ship is even this close to being canon (It's currently in the top ten of ships in the fandom on ao3 and in it's subsection it's currently fighting for the top spot with another ship)

Two of my favourite ships of all time are Rigby & Eileen from Regular Show, & Vinyl & Octavia from MLP (the latter being my current fixation). I wholeheartedly believe multishipping and polycules are the answer to every ship war. Can't decide between Roceit and Anxceit? Anaroceit, next. Cant decide between Sonadow or Sonamy? They're both good, moving on. It just feels so good because people will be arguing over which one is better, but you just know "They're equally good, what's the point of picking?"

I will say this as someone who absolutely adores this solution in most cases and often advocates for it because it is so elegant: Sometimes I don’t like one ship that makes up the proposed polycule even though fandom wide it’s quite popular. If a person likes both ships but agonizes over it being non-monogamous, don’t. Or multiship. If they don’t like a particular ship, then they don’t have to.
That being said, some of my favorite ships came out of this:
Kataang and Katoph because Katara has two hands.
Mainko: Mai x Jin x Zuko where all of them love each other.
Lapamedot, the subject of one of my favorite fanfics ever: “Something About Roommates and Girlfriends”
My most recent obsession, that I call the Timmycule, comprised of Timmy Turner, his girlfriend Veronica Star, their gf/bf Trixie Tang, his bf Jimmy Neutron, their gf Cindy Vortex, his gf Tootie, and her zucchini Sanjay.
And while I shipped them as a polycule without being too concerned with liking any particular microship, Sashannarcy definitely came out of this impulse and for that I’m grateful.
The rarepair pioneering issue is 1,000x more painful when your brain has dragged you so deep into rarepair hell one half of your newest obsession _doesn't even have a canon name._ Or when a character who's never had fic made with them before has a really ambiguous name status in canon, and _you_ have to think of something to enter into the AO3 database to be connected to them _forever._ It's too much pressure for this young fool's heart 😭
Oh boy. This takes me back to shipping Susan Pevensie with the geeky kid from the train station in 2008. The movie never gave that poor boy a name. Some people called him Warren and the rest of us just went with "Ash" because the actor's name was Ashley.
My otp has one of the characters be canonically without a name. Not “they never gave them a name because they weren’t important enough” but “they just. do not have a name.” Almost every single fanfic I’ve seen gives him a different name/nickname

Like we don't get a sneeze and a "bless you" BUT there's a game of backgammon, a slow dance, a scene where one helps break the other out of jail, two kisses (one of which is my profile pic 😁), and one intervenes before the other can get hit by someone threatening them, alas they are still a rare pair because it's a rare fandom and I'm the only one writing fic content actively shipping them.
My old OTP (completely different fandom) from a couple years ago got more attention online, and more fics, but way less canon interaction. I think in canon their major interaction was a single conversation where one of them talked about a sick horse and tried to avoid playing cards with their aunt. (And I do mean "their" as in she was aunt to them BOTH since they were cousins, but it was Regency England so that sorta thing wasn't frowned upon then). 😂

Honestly shipping and fan culture were so influential for me as a young queer person who grew up seeing fragments of myself in my favorite shows but never feeling wholly reflected. When I discovered fanfiction and AUs and the internet it was like something I'd been missing all my life finally clicked into place. It felt so validating to discover an entire community of people who had the same interpretation of a text as I did.
Also, as cringe as it sounds, shipping actually helped me to form healthy relationships in my own life as an adult. The pretend queer relationships in media I loved were a better model for connecting with other people than the toxic/codependent dynamics I saw in typical hetero romances (fictional and IRL).

I wasn't in the GO fandom when only Season 1 was out, but I've seen some older posts where people legit thought the show was Queer baiting. When i watched Season 1 myself i didnt see that supposed "Queer Baiting" at all. People always think kissing is the ultimate sign or confirmation of someone's love, but that's simply not true. It's SO obvious Aziraphale and Crowley love eachother, because of their actions. Because of how they talk to each other. And ESPECIALLY because the literal author / creator of GO said that they are in love. Explicitly. People are weird.

It was a surprise to learn that people can be possessive or weird about ship they like, or hostile about ships they dont. To me, all ships are inevitably like speculative thought exercises on how a potential relationship might go between two characters. "What is a story that gets these two potentially unrelated characters to a happy ending together?" is a very neat question to me, even if i never write those kinds of relationship stories.
Its fun, interesting, and a good prompt to write about, if youre the type to. Shipping is a great thing for fanfic people.

I love ships that work well thematically, canon or not.
Like say you have a story about societal norms; character A is trying to fit in because they are afraid people will shame them for who they actually are and character B is trying to stand out because they are afraid of being a failure. Them coming together states a new point in the narrative and makes everything so much more interesting. I love ships that just... make sense. Like they have to happen even though there are story consequences.
I'm fine with shipping someone with multiple characters, but not every character. There are some I just plain despise.

I have a confession about Splatoon that I would wish to share now that I have found the area to do so, hear me out. My brain made Cuttlefish x Octavio fanfic. The premise of it was that, when they fell down the thingy or whatever in what, Splatoon 3, yeah I think that’s right, that they would end up in the same area and have a tea party on a table-shaped rock. That’s it. Nothing else happened it was just old man yaoi but tea party. If I remember correctly Cuttlefish packed the tea for the Agents or the Squid Sisters or something and just. They just had a tea party that’s it, at least until the point in which the plot of Splatoon 3 progresses beyond that point. I remember an image of Octavio crossing the tentacles he normally crosses while using one tentacle to drink the tea (don’t even ask me how that works with the whole “they die when submerged in water” thing, it’s a mystery and a half), and trying to pretend as if he didn’t care but also he had nothing else to do so.

Most of my ships spawn from seeing what other people ship and throwing them at my brain wall to see if I like them too.

I remember when I was younger I would ship the most randomest ships in the fandom because other people shipped those characters. Did it make sense. No. Was it fun. Yes.
Then a few years later I wasn't much of a fan of shipping, I'd be ok with canon ships, but anything uncannon I'd just be like: What? Why? They're cannonically JUST friends why do people ship them?
Now I am a casual shipper and ship whatever I want whether canon or uncanon, though I'm quite picky with my ships. With some I'm like, Ok, sure, these two are cute together I guess. BUT with a rair few times I have seen ships that I just love, and love thinking about. This though has only happened like two times, I think.

I have a ship where I was one of few who shipped it in it's first season where it was super unpopular (The characters had small but very good moments) but in the second series (what came out late November of 2023 so not too long ago) the two characters Spent most their time together and had a lot of moments together because of that the ship skyrocketed and i was excited but i found out that weirdly enough some of the people who also shipped it from season 1 got oddly defensive over the ship. I'm personally just glad the ship is even this close to being canon (It's currently in the top ten of ships in the fandom on ao3 and in it's subsection it's currently fighting for the top spot with another ship)
4:41 As someone who has to come up with ship names for my own OCs: I either immediately find the perfect name or still can't figure it out after a week. A ship that I don't even ship has an absolutely perfect name, but the only "canon" one still has none

So many of these are so real but especially the one about being an aroace shipper (I NEED REP BUT I LOVE MY SHIPS), & the one about what you shipped when you were 11-14 staying with you forever. Two of my favourite ships of all time are Rigby & Eileen from Regular Show, & Vinyl & Octavia from MLP (the latter being my current fixation). I'm 19 now but I've shipped those since I was 7 & 9 respectively, was obsessed at the start of high school, & I'm 19 now, still obsessed 😭

When I was younger, I used to think that the goal of having a crush was to enter a romantic relationship, but now, I’ve realized that those feelings don’t need to be acted upon. I’d rather regret a lack of romance later than ruin a friendship now.
If you are genuinely bothered by the idea of a romantic relationship with him, it's probably better not to be in one. If you're going to be happy in a relationship, you generally won't be upset by the idea of it. I doubt you'll regret the decision you made judging by how reluctant you seem about dating him in this comment.
