  • In yet another trail vs XC bike, I time 2 laps on my cross country mountain bike (Niner RKT9 RDO) and then 2 laps on my trail bike (2018 Giant Trance Advance 1). This tests was done on cross country type trails.

    It was an entertaining video, and the results were expected for that kind of ride. Other XC loops with more technical aspects, especially in the downhill parts, might yield different results. It would be interesting to see the comparison.

    I have been on the fence about owning two mountain bikes but thanks to your insight on both bikes. I decided to keep my 29er felt xc bike and add a 27.5 trail bike to my stable as I would miss my xc bike's fast climbing fun!

  • @pepeanza6187
    @pepeanza6187 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    For that kind of trails flat and wide a 29er always is gona go faster, it doesn't matter if is a XC bike or trail, I have my own test where I ride in Mexico City you have to climb a lot like 800mts in like 11kms a lot of elevation in the climbs on my xc hardtail 29 I can make almost 10 minutes less than in the full suspension bike, on the way down I can make that 10 mins less on the full suspension so in the end is all about the terrain that you ride.

    Appreciate this comparison. Results are pretty much what I would've expected. I did catch the stretch where you almost caught that deer! That was double cool. I guess it all boils down to, "run what you brung!" Sure, purpose built bikes excel at what they are designed for, but, short of racing, you can ride pretty much any bike any where and still have fun. Point is, just go ride! See ya, I'm going riding now!!!!

    Surprised it was this close, thanks for sharing! Generally speaking, I think your timing comparisons could be more accurate by approximating the same fatigue level. Pushing on all runs and alternate XC-Trail-Trail-XC. That order matters. Then average times. If you don't have as much time, then XC-Trail-XC and switch it up to Trail-XC-Trail on a second day, averaging within-day, then across-day.

    Hi Clint, nowadays bikes are crossing over xc / trail for example the Scott Spark (not rc), the new Canyon Flux and the Epic EVO. 110 to 120 mm travel on these bikes, they are a bit slacker but still nippy. Would love to see a comparison of one of these bikes against a traditional xc and trail bike. Most blokes can only buy one bike and a bike like the ones in the examples may therefore be an ideal choice. Thank you for the posts, I enjoyed your Marmotte (spelling?) posts. Take care Ysbeer

    Hi Clint....Great video....I have to admit, I rather 'over bike' in general then under. For me I'm more XC but you are never truly XC in the NorthEast at most places so I when I'm out there I prefer a little more slack and 2.6s for when those downhills are coming on those leisure rides. I'm losing some speed for sure, but rather have the confidence when the heavier stuff comes.

    Thanks for the great video, my question is for endurance races 8 hours or longer in the saddle...does the geometry of the trail bike make it more comfortable over the cross country bike for a long day in the saddle.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not really. I found that the geometry really just affects the handling and rougher Terrain. Most people choose a cross-country bike for longer rides like that because of the pedaling efficiency. You would be worn out trying to Pedal a long-travel bike for 8 hours in my opinion.

    Hi Clint, I am using a rigid bike since more than 4 years now for every XC or marathon races. Of course on training sessions a lot trail bike riders challenged me as they thought I would be not able to keep their pace. What shall i say, on no trial against no rider I lost! And I am riding a lot and a lot with others. I love my rigid bike and would never change back to any kind of suspension. You should try to make a comparison against a rigid bike! Hard work but a lot of fun and anybody start again to learn how to bike and how to manage a trial. PS: I am not saying you can't!!! :-)

      Lightweight cross-country mountain bikes make really good gravel bikes. not quite as fast on payment but not too far off. You said downhill single track. Definitely not for rugged downhill single truck that is suited for an enduro or downhill bike.

    Hey Clint. long time lurker, first time poster. After watching your midpriced vs high end trail bike series, I settled on buying myself a 2017 trance 2 (LBS had a sweet deal on it because its a year old and a hideous color) I already have an xc bike I love and I wanted something that would be more versatile for when I travel away from the Houston TX area into hill country. I will be upgrading the wheelset after Christmas but I was wondering what other modifications you could recommend to make the bike feel a little more like my XC bike. After riding it a few times, I love the way it descends but darn it I do miss the way my XC hardtail takes off like a rocket. I understand that I will never get this bike to feel like my Giant XTC 29er. but after my wheels are upgraded, where do I go from there? Do I modify shock and fork settings, modify stem length or switch components? Thanks in advance and keep making awesome videos!

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +james ward light weight carbon wheels and faster tires (like Schwabe Rocket Ron) would be a big step. Maybe slightly longer stem. Run a bit more rebound damping and a tad less sag in suspension.

    Nice vid, great comparison. But, i am very curious how big the difference is when you ride with the exact same tires + tire pressure on both the xc and the trail bike.
    You see, i actually don't think the weight is going to be too much of a noticeable difference (unless you're racing maybe). And with your suspension set a bit stiffer on the trail bike, the overall extra resistance and power loss will be not that much compared to riding an xc bike, i guess?

    My new Tallboy hauls A$$! It blurs the lines between trail and cross country. Just my opinion, but if you went to a tire with almost a continuous side edge on the front and more round in profile it would greatly improve the front end washing out. Any tire I've owned that has alternating side nobs is sketchy as hell. I've read countless reviews on Noby Nics that say they are unpredictable in corners. I hit some super click mud hidden beneath leaves on Friday on my Maxxis Minions and it stuck. The bike spun about 100 degrees but it bit down and kept it upright. I'm running and Ardent Race 2.35 and Minion 2.3 which is stock on the Tallboy. I also notice on softer dirt the carry speed a hell of a lot better than 2.1 & 2.2's I'd run in the past.

      If you're losing races by a minute or two and it really bothers you then you probably need a full suspension race bike. But if you're just out there to have fun and push yourself then the stumpy would be okay. You may just want to get some smaller tires.

    Manuel Fumic was successfully racing XCO World Cups, which are gnarly as hell, on his F-Si Hardtail! Your singletracks on the over hand are really flat and easy... So from my point of view, it makes absolutely zero sense to even consider a modern long travel trail bike similar to 2018 Giant Trance, in such circumstances. Trail bike = jumping, rocks, aggressive breathtaking descends, bike parks to some extent! For everything less, XC bike is more than adequate! ;)

    Thanks so much! This video speaks exactly to the question I was asking myself regarding my next bike.
    I have a 2017 Roscoe 8 and I have loved every minute of it and put about 2000 miles on it. I have done 4 races on it, with a skinny wheel set up on the front. Obviously, still not a fast bike.
    I thought your use case analysis right at the end was spot on: the cross country bike on flat trails or any race. Otherwise, the trail bike for the mountains. Simple.
    As another rider pointed out, guys like me might have the temptation to go for one of these 110 mm fast trail bikes. Like the Scott spark, etc. I have some desire for a full suspension to be able to jump with a little more confidence, and I would also like to go faster. My buddy just bought a very high dollar Pivot 429, and I am sure it is both faster and more trail capable than my old Roscoe!
    So the question becomes do I buy a jack of all trades, and just maybe use the Roscoe in the winter time. Or do I go for the absolute fastest cross country set up, and also get a longer suspension trail bike.
    Decisions decisions.
    Thank you so much, just wanted to let you know where my head was at as one of your viewers.

    Completely and utterly disappointing in this so-called side-by-side comparison. Although it really isn't a comparison that all.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Flying Lap Productions you missed the point of the comparison. The point is to figure out if a trail bike, set up as a trail bike, would somewhat keep pace with an XC bike. This in effect answers the question of whether a trail bike (again, set up as a trail bike) could be fast enough on XC trails and be the "one bike" in a quiver. It would not make sense to swap tires every time you rode XC-type trails. So in my view the test was very valid.

      Clint Gibbs no I didn't miss the point Clint. but you can't compare different bikes on different tires if you're going to be comparing their outright speed. never mind that the 29er rolls much faster anyway, but now you're not even testing a controlled group, it's not a comparison at all.

      Clint Gibbs now if you were testing tires you would do it on the same machine using different sets but you're testing the speed of a type of bike the least you could do to make the test more reliable and credible is utilize the same compound and same tread design tires on the different style type of bikes.

      +Flying Lap Productions I keep my tests pretty grass-roots to be suitable for most "average Joe" riders. I don't have access to a vast variety of gear (e.g. multiple sets of tires), as most riders don't either. Follow me?

      Clint Gibbs no I don't follow it doesn't make any sense to me. Just like another viewer posted comments below, the least you could do to make the test somewhat comparable is riding on the same tires that's really not asking too much. I don't see the point of testing two different bikes on two different sets of tires what are you accomplishing by that? It has nothing to do with being Grassroots. I understand that concept, but your so-called tests or comparison has no relevance that's my point.
