Thanks for the end of the video. My Dad just passed away on his 60th birthday. He always wanted to do Moab and we made plans to but his health got in the way. For his memorial we went to Moab for him with all our jeeps and it was amazing. Life is short live it to the fullest you can.
Having just come through cancer treatment, I have to totally agree with you Nate. We only get one ride, and we never know when it might end. Waste nothing…
Hope you are doing better Michael Phillips, I broke my back in 2000 and my ankle was broken and twisted around backwards back in 1992 but until my testosterone level bottomed out at 37 in 2018, I was still living my life pretty much and even went to West Virginia riding the Hatfield and McCoy trails with my brother on our SXSs in 2012
I seriously CANT WAIT to see your video Shawn! You tell stories so well and we will get a different view from what Nate had. Plus….rope swing!!! Lol. So good getting to know you! Hope to hang out again soon!
I love that you will have such a different perspective lol. Us splitting up will make for two completely different videos! Hit me up if you need any footage that you saw in the video buddy. I got you 👊
Nate this is one of your best videos ever. You have become so good at telling a story and the editing is outstanding. Your bush repairs for the tire, fuel filter etc. were awesome to watch. It was great to have a chance to sit down with you at Expo PNW. Hope to see you on the trails someday soon!
There are hundreds, maybe thousands of Rubicon trail videos. This is by far, the best one I have ever seen. Actually no. It's the best TH-cam video I've ever watched. Thank you.
I did an upgrade on a buddies Tacoma by installing a cotter pin in the transmission line "bypass" block to keep the lines open at all times. In addition to that an added trans cooler up front and he hasn't had further issues. Hope that helps.
@@DirtLifestyle Nate, pinning that plunger in on the bypass block is very helpful in keeping the temps down before they get hot. You can find it inline with the trans lines under the passenger side. There's a plunger on the side with a tiny hole on either side of it, like a hydraulic timing belt tensioner. Push that plunger in and hold it while threading the cotter pin through to retain it. Love the videos and I'm glad I could provide some helpful info. 👍
Is this only for an Automatic Trans? The cotter pin deal. I’ve seen my low oil pressure like come on, once in 70,000 miles. But I was at an extreme angle.
Yeah it's for the transmission cooler bypass valve. It's s small block between both lines that is closed when the fluid temp is below a set temp (re-routes fluid back to transmission instead of cooler). When the fluid reaches temp the valve opens and allows the fluid to go to the cooler up front. Pinning it locks it open 100%.
Your ending really got me Nate. I'm lying in bed with a blood clot in my lung, I can't take the heat and humidity outside. So my 502 Suburban swap continues to sit and wait for me. I'm missing out on trail rides with my wife and daughter and the unknown of upcoming test dates and results is not leaving me in a great state of mind. 51 yrs old and I wish I had at times done more for myself and my family than always helping others. It felt right and good at the time, and even though I would never turn my back on someone in need if I was in a position to help, I'm lying here feeling like I short changed myself and my family. To anyone reading this, along theblines of Nate's closing remarks, if you're able now, get out with family and friends and run some trails and enjoy the time you have NOW, don't wait. Thanks for the video Nate.
Life is Short, Amen Last year I turned 60, forced to go on disability at 57.5, I have had several severe health conditions for years & continue to get more as I age (my sister & brother passed in their 30s). Do not wait to do the things you want later, later is now. I hope when I do die, it's in a beautiful place like I see in your videos. I will probably never make it to the extreme trails you experience but I will be leaving Wisconsin in the winters & going to remote places in the southwest camping. Thank you for sharing all the wonderful footage.
I'm glad Shaun talked you into making the video. After watching this, I have to say it's a masterpiece. I think this will be your most well received video to date.
Was an awesome time hanging out with everyone! It’s always nice when you meet some good people. Thanks Nate and Shaun for doing things like this. Honestly, it’s the best way to do a trail like this. A bunch of people who have never done it with a couple that have. After doing it though, I would prefer to take three days. It gives you a chance to really soak in being there. Then you can really relax and enjoy everything that’s there. From the wheeling, to the scenery, to the springs themselves. Definitely returning to do it again! P.S. Leo, let me know when you get that skid plate. We’ll go playing again!
@@jasonjohnson4214 I’m in. I’ll be making a top for that thing so I can enjoy some colder/wetter wheeling. I’m always down for having to top off but sometimes it just gets miserable. Hahaha Maybe something in September/October. My August is already full.
For the peeps who didnt watch this vid to the end... and there are thousands of Ruby Trail vids, you missed the great words. "How many trips left?" Indeed sir. Thanks for reminding me. I am probably 20 years older than you and my wife and I live by that as best we can. Headed to Catalina Island on thursday. Too hot to Jeep here is AZ. Be well.
After 25 years of thinking about doing the rubicon I finally did it last month. It was awesome! You are so right, you just have to get up and go do things before it’s too late.
Don't apologize for talking numbers. As another builder / suspension nerd, I love to here it. I've always been fascinated by how there is no apparent "perfect" wheelbase or tire size. One obstacle the 110" wheelbase rig will absolutely idle up without any drama and the next its all f'd off and banging limiter followed by a stock tj on 33's idling through with open diffs laughing. It might be one of my favorite parts of wheeling. It seems like every setup has its place.
That zip tie job works really well! I used the exact same trick when I was out in Wyoming. I blew the top of my plastic radiator on a previous rig. I melted a zip tie into it and drove it all the way back home that way in the heat of the summer. Good job making that thing work!
As I get older, and as well as my dad getting older, I can relate so much to your closing statement about wanting to visit so many places before it's to late.
This video really hit home for me I'm 52 currently having a 88 YJ Bill one tons LS and just can't wait to get that done so I can get out on the trails and everything and get my 13-year-old out there my 33 year old and have a good time thank you for the videos keep up the great content
I completely agree Nate. Get out and live your life. So many of us, (myself included) get so wrapped up in day to day struggles and work, that life goes by and before you know it, it's gone. I'm going to be 51 this fall and it seems like just yesterday I was 25. It really is true that the older you get, the faster the years seem to go by. Thanks for the reminder to get out and live! I hope your message reaches many people. Great video and that zip tie fix was borderline genius! Keep living life Nate and bring us all the videos!
Wonderful video Nate. One of your best and very Attenborough with your VO work. It took me three attempts to finish today (life and family interruptions), and you even got the Mrs to get excited about the Rubicon. Thank you.
I’ve learned the trick to soup bowl is turning passenger/right. Feels wrong, but it’s correct. Nothing beats waking up on the trail, already in low!!! Glad to see you picking up the trash, The Rubicon thanks you!! I’m gunna remember the zip tie melting trick. 👍 Even though it didn’t work… Life is short, enjoy it while your here!!🤘🤙💯🏁
Im 52 almost 53 and i keep telling people to stop talking about stuff and go do it. My bucket list is way longer than the time i have to do it so now i will do as much as i can. Thanks for the great video and the inspiration at the end. I will do this trail when i have a rig capable of doing it.
Nice video and comments at the end. My wife and I were able to check the Rubicon off my bucket list last year. We're in our early 60's and along the lines of what you're saying at the end, we are now planning and making trips that we thought we'd do after retirement. But that's still a few years away and seems to be getting more distant with current situations. So we're doing them now. Cheers!
I'm one of two Isuzu VehiCross' that have done the entire Rubicon trail. Not gonna lie, it was intense! I had doubts going through it but in the end (day 3) we were golden. No breakage just a heim joint repair got me through. What I remember most was the friendships that were made and forged along the way. Epic trip!
You are 100% correct, the rubicon is a magical place! I was there about a month ago and camped at buck island, and even though the bugs were absolutely terrible, I still had an amazing time!
Awesome trip, wonderful outlook on our short reality of life. Thanks .I hope that a few thousand people took all u had to say to heart. Cheers from B.C. coast
Arron is the man! And a modest team player built in to his nature. Nice rigs all around. Very tricky and technical. Good job to all the crawlers navigating that!! Send more to watch please!! Thanks Nate!
Awesome trip and great message at the end. These trips where you're challenged, and you have to pull together as a team are where lifetime friendships and memories are made. The rubicon is truly an amazing place, it's one of those things you don't understand until you experience it. Keep up the great work.
Problems, troubles, and breakdowns are half the fun (as long as its not catastrophic and/or injuries involved.) When things go wrong, it makes things exciting. It gives reason to stop, have fun, joking around with each other, work together, and overall just enjoy the experience. When things go perfectly smoothly, it seems like things go by too quick and it can be "boring" (relatively at least. Its never boring going on an adventure haha)
My uncle passed away in 2021, a few months after our last camping trip. I still can’t fully digest the idea. Who would’ve thought it would be our last. And he was in his 40’s. Now I go out as much as I can even alone when everyone is busy.
I was just talking about trailering my jeep from NC to California to do the Rubicon sometime within the next couple of years. After watching this video-- I want to go ASAP. Awesome Job!
Your message at the end really hits home, life is way to short, I lost my brother in 2019 and I’ve always wished I could just go wheeling with him one time
The best video you've produced to date ! One of the classic trails, a few expected break downs, gnarly rock climbing, creative trail repairs, different rigs, beautiful scenery and great camera work ! This one had it all.
Discovery 2 or bustttttttttt. I love the taco but the D2 is way more entertaining than just another jeep or toyota. I did have a laugh when you basically got the 3 amigos on the toyota though haha. Loved the video though and thank you for the content
Looks like a group of some great people with you there. You’re definitely right about life being short, and as a mid-lifer as well, appreciating every minute I can . Great video bud 🤙
Awesome video Nate! Especially the comments at the end. Truly something to take to heart. Life is short, make the most of it while you can. Thank you!!!
The trail changes every year. The year you did Little Sluice in your TJ it had much more small rock in it (I did it the same day as you back then). This year Little Sluice is much rougher. All the smalls have been beat out, washed down, or ice broken and all thats left is big and sharp boulders. I love doing it year after year and seeing the differences.
It used to be even bigger. They did "maintenance" on it, that is probably around when you saw it. It is technically a county road. Wayalife has a video done right before the maintenance and the rocks are huge!
An AMAZING video of a BEAUTIFUL trail. What it revealed to me is that this is a young man’s activity with a budget BIG enough for an awesome build to tame an off-road adventure such as this. Your message at the end was GREAT but my truck is more for camping excursions than rock crawling and the fact that I’m 62 yrs. Old and I drive a Hummer H2 that’s 20 years old, which are both excuses but an awe-inspiring video just the same!!!
Oh I need to thank you for your attitude and your message, it's true! There's another great TH-camr from another interest range who said "20 years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the things you did! And that's just the way it is.
I like to camp at buck island lake. It is one of the most scenic spots on the trail and I think it is closer to the half way point. The part of the trail by buck island is also one of the more difficult sections. After that the trail eases up quite a bit.
Such breakdowns is why I choose to do the Rubicon with the Jamboree. Lost some freedom to do as wish on trail but pretty nice to know we had mechanics and helicopter support if rare parts and repairs needed.
42 mins, that is a lot of content. Thank you Nate That stinks that the Tacoma is having issues like that. I want the Tacoma to be good to you. Thank you for sharing and being honest about the Tacoma's issues so far.
I really loved the closing message, it’s such a good reminder to appreciate what we have, including the time we have left. Thanks for the awesome video, Nate. You’re the man.
Great video Nate, it brings back memories of when I ran the Rubicon in a full sized 1970 Blazer with a swapped in 6.2 diesel, some where around 35-40 years ago.
Great job. Very true. None of us know how long we’ve got here. I started wheeling 4 years ago and have ran the Rubicon in a friends lj. Quite a ride. Thanks for all the work you do.
I've had this trail on my list for so long but this video makes me realize just the level of preparation mechanically, mentally and financially you need to have before tackling this trail with confidence. A regear, some slightly larger tires and maybe a little extra armor and my Tacoma should be ready within the next year and I'm going no matter what. Thanks for the amazing storytelling Nate!
🙏 for you and your perspective on life. I hope you’re able to make it back in time for your sons bday. Can’t wait for the next vid. Keep up the great work!
Wow!!! I'm trying to think of what I can say to let you know how much I enjoyed this video!! And I still can't... Hands down the best trail review, and general how to go out and have a blast video ever! You got a new sub. Keep them coming
My Tacoma does that too while climbing steep hills “transmission fluid overheated”. I was told that it’s not really overheated, it’s only because the truck is at too steep an angle where not enough transmission fluid is detected by the sensor. All the other cruise control stuff are mainly because of your lift and front bumper/grille changes messed up the sensor.
The solution to the transmission overheat is a manual swap! There’s been a few trails on my 6MT taco that I had no issues while my AT counterparts struggled with. I’m not sure how much it will help with the shutting off problem on inclines but I’ve heard from a few people that putting an oil catch can or an air oil separator in helps alleviate oil burning issues. Supposedly the crankcase vent is on the driver side rear valve cover and at steep inclines pools up with oil and makes its way back to the intake. My suggestion is maybe drop the oil pan and baffle it like race cars so you don’t hit oil starvation and then add in that separator/catch can to prevent smoking
Did that trail in 2003 and 2004, it is awsome. We had a major break on the slabs soon as you leave Loon lake then the truck going back to the parking lot put a fan into the radiator on a hard drop.We spent the first day and night only about a mile in since the part for the first broke truck was in Sacramento. Rear carrier split in half in a dana 44 with a lock right and we replaced it with a Detroit out on the rock slabs.
Love the trail. I have a YJ on 33s, what a challenge. My son Morgan and his buddy Brice have lifted JKU's. We went when there was snow in May, reverse direction half way. Did the whole thing end of June. Great times
My 2017 Tacoma had the same oil pressure issue, once, mid climb on a ledge, on Charleau Gap trail. Wasn't an issue before or since on equally steep climbs or descents. Really like the truck but I hate the "nanny" tendencies of all the electronics.
That is a great way to describe it. "Nanny" electronics are currently the only thing failing and unfortunately they are taking out perfectly functional systems like cruise control and traction control. I can live with the low oil issue since it's only occasional but it is still kind of lame lol. In any case the only problems I'm having are related to these overbearing nanny systems.
Your words at the end really hit home and I hope everyone takes you up on your suggestion. I like to take my Dad on Epic Jeep trips and we leave for our last one in two weeks. His body can no longer take the pain of riding through trails like he used too. We make our final ride together in two weeks. Rubicon, Fordyce and Moab. Wish us luck.

Great video, thanks for taking us along 😀
Cheers!
Great job on the video. And what you said makes you think of what you want in life, thanks for taking us along with you on the ride.🤙🤟✌
Best offroad video I've seen! The Rubicon is definitely on the bucket list!
I completely agree 👍 this place is magic...
Amen brother, life is short and you get one shot! Love the taco 🤙
My uncle passed away in 2021, a few months after our last camping trip. I still can’t fully digest the idea. Who would’ve thought it would be our last. And he was in his 40’s. Now I go out as much as I can even alone when everyone is busy.
WOW!!! You deserve an award or something for this video. What an inspiration this is. An amazing mechanic, an amazing human. Thanks for this.
By far the best video you have made keep up the good work and I love your message at the end
I had ten minutes to watch something and bam 45 minutes later. Great adventure, thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching and for taking the time comment. I'm glad you enjoyed the adventure 👊
Beautiful trail. I love the Rubicon. I was on the Rubicon at the start of Covid. All the jamborees were cancelled and it was like a virgin trail.
Sounds like a dream!
This video was nothing short of a movie. Definitely inspiring a trip to the Rubicon for me. Keep up the great work!
As an old jeep graybeard, I'd have to say that you would make Grainville King proud, Nick.
I was just talking about trailering my jeep from NC to California to do the Rubicon sometime within the next couple of years. After watching this video-- I want to go ASAP. Awesome Job!
Nate I had to watch this video again! Its just SO good!! Im so glad I got to experience the Rubicon with this group of amazing people!!
Warms my heart seeing a Taco lead around a bunch of Jeeps
Now just get those nanny gremlins figured out lol
Your message at the end really hits home, life is way to short, I lost my brother in 2019 and I’ve always wished I could just go wheeling with him one time
Very sorry for your loss man 🙏
I love my brother and couldn't imagine what that must be like.
The best video you've produced to date ! One of the classic trails, a few expected break downs, gnarly rock climbing, creative trail repairs, different rigs, beautiful scenery and great camera work ! This one had it all.
Great job on the Rubicon video. Quite possibly the best video you've ever done.
Thank you!
Probably one of your best videos that you have ever made! Really enjoyed that.
Drove this entire trail when I just turned 16. Most fun week ever. And the stars you can see out there. Best middle of the night piss ever.
Thanks brother 👊

Excellent video, thanks! What a great reminder at the end.
Thank you 🙏
And well said!
one of, if not the best vid you've ever done ! thanks man.
Thank you!
Thank you Nate
That stinks that the Tacoma is having issues like that. I want the Tacoma to be good to you. Thank you for sharing and being honest about the Tacoma's issues so far.
Thank you buddy 👊
I'm still hopeful that I can find the root cause of these issues
I really loved the closing message, it’s such a good reminder to appreciate what we have, including the time we have left. Thanks for the awesome video, Nate. You’re the man.
Was great to see the rig at NW Overland Rally. Didn't look all that much worse for wear.
Great video Nate, it brings back memories of when I ran the Rubicon in a full sized 1970 Blazer with a swapped in 6.2 diesel, some where around 35-40 years ago.
I plan on taking a bit more time. Hopefully my Gladiator does well. Small group, less than eight. Multiday! Nice Video!
Great job.
Thank you! Welcome aboard my friend 👊
I forsee a fuel filter relocation kit hitting the market. The Rubicon is a beautiful trail. I ran it in the 80s and have great memories.
In the 80s!? I'm sure it was alot different back then...
That sounds like quite the adventure!
I would love to do the Rubicon òne day. Both of my trucks are too big and not capable enough at this time. One day though!
This has to be my favorite video of all time!! Great work
Wow! Thanks man!
Love the trail. I have a YJ on 33s, what a challenge. My son Morgan and his buddy Brice have lifted JKU's. We went when there was snow in May, reverse direction half way. Did the whole thing end of June. Great times
Nate, as always, great video. This one hits different and is now my favorite video of the Rubicon Trail.
Wow thanks man! I'm honored
You are the hidden gem on TH-cam that I have been looking for Nate
Thanks Nate as always a great video and your so right about getting out and doing it.
Sorry Nate not sure I put Matt in there.
Awesome work nate, you're MacGyver trailside repair skills are unmatched and you've built one hell of a toyota.
Man Nate that was one of the best video’s i have watched all year , thanks so much for taking the time to make it for us , it was great 👍
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching 👊
I’m just so psyched you’re wearing a GFC hat! Haha Please tell us you’ll be working with them on a project soon
Nate, I appreciate all the work you do, in order to put this well-crafted video.
Very wise words at the end Nate. God Bless you.
Couple potential leads... search TSS recalibrate, VSC reset... Great video and good luck!
I was debating doing the rubicon this fall but I think your closing just sealed the deal for me. No doubt in my mind anymore. I need to do it.
