    Understand this, there is no leprechaun riding a unicorn to oil company mixing a special cocktail for 2cycle oil. All the oil derive from same stocks just different qualities. Its about diluting properly for 2cycle to burn. If you put to much "2cycle oil" it smokes. 2cycle oil comes from same stock as 4cycle oil. Its just been colored and labeled "2cycle oil" and you pay more for less.
    Look inside 2cycle you will see a piston, cylinder, pushrod,crankshaft! Same thing inside of high-performance engine. So use the best oil you know for the job.

      If you’re going to use regular motor oil for your 2 cycle engines like they did 50 years ago, you need to mix it using the ratios they used 50 years ago. 25:1 or 32:1. Modern 2-cycle oil is formulated differently than conventional motor oil - don’t try substituting 2-cycle oil for motor oil in your car or expensive 4-cycle engines, you’ll quickly learn it’s not the same thing with different labeling.

    Sir, great video to help home mechanics! I'll buy the Honda Transmission Fluid. My mower is over 12 yrs old and has about 300+ hrs. Transmission is fine but I'm going to replace it. I use M1 10w30 High Mileage oil and change it twice a year. I believe that one secret to mower life is to keep the blades sharpened. I change blades same time as oil change. I also clean under mower each month. Doing this cuts down strain on thick grass. I have the 190cc engine and use it to mulch 2 large pin oak leaves every fall. I have not raked leaves since 2012!

    Thanks !! I went to my small engine shop and asked for a common old motor that I could disassemble and learn. He gave me a HRX 217 HXA !! No self-propulsion and won't run unless on 'choke'. $700 new ! But the owner just bought a new one rather than repair. Leaky seal on the shaft may fix transmission. Carb cleaning should fix idle. I DON'T LIKE OUR THROW AWAY CULTURE !! THIS WAS THE ONLY VIDEO I COULD FIND ABOUT RE-FILLING TRANSMISSION.
    The rest are all 'remove and replace ($245). THANKS !

    Good info thanks. Hey, fwiw, Yamaha in their Hydrostatic transmissions they call for 10w-30 Diesel Oil. That may be another option for people not wanting to buy the Honda HST oil. Guess I just like when companies don’t sell their branded stuff, but give you a oil spec that lets you buy what you want.

    Damb thanks for the drilling the hole in the discharge chute idea. I got the same mower 2018 used almost a month & my Husqvarna Hu800awd was fixed. So the Honda went in the basement until late last year just to run a tank of gas threw it, then back in the basement. I have to change the belt on the Husqvarna AWD. Yep the Honda would clog up. I do 23 yards per week with the lil mowers.

    Is there a danger to running the old fluid for an extended period if the mower speed is satisfactory? My HRX is original from 2009 and has never had the hydro fluid changed. I hate to tear into it unless I need to. However if swapping fluid will extend the life then I’ll do it.

    • @thisismee3642
      @thisismee3642  ปีที่แล้ว

      The way the system works is hydraulic pressure. In order to keep the pressures high tolerances need to stay tight. Old fluid doesn't provide the needed friction reduction to insure long life of the unit. Best to maintenence change it while it's working great rather when it starts slowing down. The reason it's slowing is because it is looking it's viscosity. Oil breaking down and not providing the friction resistance to reduce the wear. I would change it it it has been in service for a few years just to maintain the unit. Just know to buy a new unit is $150+ vs $15 for a bottle of hydrostatic fluid.

    What's the difference between 100% synthetic and full synthetic? Other than the fact that in your example at 3:25, one was motor oil and one was ATF.

    • @thisismee3642
      @thisismee3642  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Full synthetic *example* 80% conventional regular oil 20% pure synthetic oil.
      100% pure synthetic oil is all contents inside of bottle is synthetic oil.
      So full synthetic mixes regular and synthetic oil. Yet when used in duty situation the conventional oil breaks down faster.
      Conventional oil may evaporate flashpoint at 350°f and synthetic at 500°f. Using air cooling engines that idle at 325°f no load. Then when loaded temperature increases significantly especially if it 2cycle the rpms can go up to 9,000rpms producing even more metal softening heat.
      That is why I use 100%synthetic even in my 2cycle. I sold an lawn mower oil change to a neighbor. He was standing right there during engine warm, oil drain and refill. When engine started, it was ruff at first because of old conventional oil. Once the 100% worked its way around internals. He even noticed how smooth his briggs and stratton started running.

    Hi Thisls, my 10 years old HRX2173HYA trans still runs strongly but it gets hot after 1hr running (I found that while try cleaning grass cake underneath) and can not touch it, no leaking oil (very dry axle). I need your opinion, change the fluid or replace the transmission?
    Thank you.

    • @thisismee3642
      @thisismee3642  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lets get one thing understood. I dont like spending money unnecessarily! So spending $300+\- for transmission on a $500 unit out? Since it is still strong cant go wrong fluid change $15. Next thing is the unit will get hot because it operates by means of hydraulic pressure. Anytime you create pressure the temperature will rise. Temperatures above 125f* will not be comfortable to touch. These residential mowers are intended to operate for about 30-45 min once a day once a weak for about 4months out of the year with the factory honda fluid.
      I would invest in high quality 100% sysnthetic fluid. I used amsoil 20W-50 Synthetic Hydrostatic Transmission Fluid with my hrx217 and it became a duty mower. Duty is what you are doing by running it constantly for more than 45min a day, everyday. With the amsoil you have to let it warm up for about 5min then it is ready for duty work. I would recommend 100% synthetic engine oil also. The regular conventional engine oil not really a duty oil especially in these air cooled engines.
      Check out this video. Start at the 4:17 mark. It shows engine temps at free spin. Once you load it with grass and self propel. The engine temps rise significantly

    • @thisismee3642
      @thisismee3642  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also check my other videos for long lasting equipment advice suggestions.
      If you use synthetic use 100% synthetic. That way all the contents is synthetic. When you use full synthetic. The contents may be 85% conventional/15% synthetic. And of course the conventional will breakdown first. Amsoil has 100% synthetic hydrostatic fluid. My experience with amsoil 100% syntheitc was I had to let it warmup first before it performed maximum. Once warmed up it. It becomes a duty mower.
      Using the honda specific hydrostatic oil with be operational at startup but break down fast depending on use. If you only using your equipment for 1 20min cut per week 4months out of the year use honda fluid. That is not duty use of equipment. Still recommend changing the fluid after 2-3years of homeowner use.
      If you cutting 3+lawns a day 4months out year then leaf mulching 1 1/2 months. Use the amsoil because you are using your equipment as duty. That is where the amsoil shines. I recommend changing the oil after about 1year of duty use to keep it fast and operational for your commercial business.
      Once you get the hang of replacing the fluid. Its no question about doing it. Then it becomes harder to just buy new equipment because current equipment is proven with minor maintenance. Once minor maintenance smooth out. You really start to see your capital build because its not constantly being pushed out $800+ every 2-3years for new equipment

      @@BruceAvilla amsoil 100% synthetic hydrostatic oil is for duty use!
      let me correct this. My problem was using the synthetic "motor/engine" oil for the hydrostatic transmission. Because I was reading forums and people was saying they used 30w "motor" oil so I improvised and used 100% synthetic "motor" oil. It worked but intermittently. So at the time I switched back to honda specific hydrostatic oil.
      Then I found that amsoil had 100% sythetic hydrostatic specific oil. I used that and what I found is I had to let the fluid warmup. Once it was warm/hot! It became a duty mower. I sold a hydrostatic fluid change to a lawnmower man. And told him warm up first. The mower became duty for him.

Spin with a drill, engage the metal lever(with the spring on it) activating the self propell if it still works the output shaft will start spinning. Output shafts spinning, it works, now find out if there is a leak and fix it.
