  • Every week, Eco India brings you stories that inspire you to build a cleaner, greener and better tomorrow.
    Biogas units are transforming rural India, especially for women who are homemakers. They're able to cook faster and easier with far less indoor air pollution. Not a bad way to combat deforestation.

    Bio gas usage has been around for decades in rural India. My grandfather had an amazing system installed at his home back in the 1970s…and mind you it was village

    I was surprised why villages in place like Sindhudurg were not using biogas, because in my village Rajapur (couple of km away from Sindhudurg) people are using it for 30+ years.

    My uncle has installed this more than 10 years ago and is still using it fine. At that time it costed around 18K, with subsidy. Nowadays Central government has stopped subsidy i think. Here in Kerala lot of people have cows at home but very few are aware of this. With the subsidy also removed, nobody is going to use it now.

    In eighties, GoI started gobar gas movement in rural areas, which failed primarily coz of dome cracks. Then came the floating dome concept and balloon storage technique. The demonstrated model is the oldest, with a difference, that the dome is being placed underground, which is likely to increase the life the plant

    • @jarjarbinks3193
      @jarjarbinks3193 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any idea as to why the dome cracking happened? low-quality concrete? In my village, back in the 1980s, only the rich farmers (who had almost a dozen cattle in their household) opted for biogas. Out of the 4 families I knew, only 1 was a concrete dome and others were just dome made from steel. Even after a few years of installation, they were complaining that it required a lot of maintenance, didn't produce enough bio-gas, and wasn't worth it. Sad to say that all of them are defunct now as their kids left the village and they don't have cattle anymore.

    There are also solar ovens. I have one from India made by Rohingas I think. They’re effective even in Canada for 1/2 the year. Use these on fine days and the biogas when not.

      I think 25k is after some govt incentive. Not sure how much that incentive is. There is no way such a structure can be made for 25k (including material and labour).

    Good initiative!
    On another note, I’m a bit disappointed at the state of this district which lies so close to India’s richest state, Goa. This probably is another example of why we need smaller states.

    Don't blame whole deforestation things on villagers. Government is also equally responsible for such conduct. Industries acquire lands and cut whole forest for its own benefit and land.
