Got mine in 2014 for winter trips, by far the most comfortable pad I have used. Now I use it all 3 seasons. The crinkly noise is very noticeable, however, it doesn't bother me. With use over time the crinkle fades a bit.
I'm on mine now for it's 3rd year. I was skeptical about ultralight mats, but this is undeniably one of my most trustworthy pieces of kit as well. It's well worth it's cost.
Agreed. I got the max because I'm a big fella and it's so comfortable and the heat it kicks back is like laying on an electric blanket. It does crinkle while it's deflated but not a lot when it's properly inflated.
I have used this pad all the time, never has let me down. I always get a good nights rest. Keeps me warm and cushioned even as a side sleeper. Only complaint is that my legs tend to hang off the sides of the mummy profile, but it’s ok.
Just ordered the wide version. Everything else I've tried has failed. Not fun shivering and trying to stay warm. Thanks for the great review! They run about $260 now but will be worth it. I love cold weather camping, and at 66, I need all the help I can get! Now off to Grayson Highlands!
The Outdoor Gear Review : Hello Luke ! Thanks for your testimonial on your favourite sleeping pad the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm Sleeping Pad ! This review is impressive due to the amount of times you state , that you have enjoyed a comfortable nights sleep ! The durability of a product is always determined over a period of times used , and judging by the condition of your pad its provided you excellent value , for the amount paid [ $150 ] of one hundred and fifty dollars ! This in turn works out to about $1.50/day for the 100 times you have personally used this sleeping pad !!! Thanks S.S.S./*Tom
I bought my Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm Sleeping Pad because of your first video on it. I don't think it was that expensive back then. Very happy to hear you still like it, I love mine. Thank you for all the hard work you do to bring us these videos.
Thermarest makes great stuff. I've had mine for probably twenty years. Just used it on a backyard campout a couple nights ago .. worked great! Just like the day I bought it. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Luke, I own the NeoAir Xtherm but I enjoy the Big Agnes Q-Core SL much much more ! It does not sound like a bag of chips and the design keeps me in the center better . As always thanks for the videos !
I never even thought of noise as a potential problem with outdoors sleeping gear. If that keeps you up nights, you are likely to have a hard time with just nature on it's own I suspect. Well you learn new stuff all the time I guess. Still - personal dysfunction due to noisy sleeping pad, seems rather exotic to me ...
specs on that are super top end; I have one myself My 2 issues with it are the crunchy sounds and IMHO its not the best pad for a side sleeper. noise factor depends on how restless a sleeper you are IMO what has been your experience with those issues. its a study high quality product with rave reviews all over the interwebs keep up your favorite gear series; its your gear for a reason
i use this but the larger version both in my hammock (great with the baffles lined this way) and my tent, and its so good, i can lay on the side without hips touching ground and its really comfortable if you deflate it a little bit, also on top of this the r value is soo good. only downside is that its a bit crackly and noisy when moving around but, really theres nothing but love for this product
Holy cow bro you would die from the heat in Texas lol Your temps sound divine! I remember going to play a show at 7:00 at night and it was still 110 degrees (actual temp, not heat index) Love that jacket :-)
Hey Luke love your awesome reviews as always (my favourite American channel along with Dixie/homemade wanderlust) I hope you have got yourself the Flextailgear mini pump by now (or the thermarest version) they are great (a little heavy for gram counter conscious maybe) but will inflate a pad within a minute ...only 20 quid off amazon ....truly love your reviews ....always down to earth, easy to watch and wise
im gonna go with this pad based on your recommendations. Ive had lots of issues with other pads and i'm really hoping this one works out for a few years at least!
Thats a great sleeping pad. I use the NeoAir All Season myself. It's a little heaver and a R of 4.9 instead of 5.7. But, It's also about $50-60 less expensive. I've never had a problem with the sound, nor have people that slept in the same tent (although I normally use a bivy). But, I don't usually go car camping, so I'm tired at the end of the day of hiking. Also, I do find I focus on outside noise. especially when doing solo adventures.
Great vid mate. I own this sleeping pad in the large an the noise isn't a issue. How ever watching you clasping the pad mad me giggle as it's the exact same way as I do. How ever in a hilleberg soulo it's not as plane sailing. Great vid as always
I bought one of these but it failed on my first trip: the internal baffles started popping. This was in the middle of a 4 night trip in the Scottish Highlands, by the end it looked like a beachball at one end. It's an undeniably warm and light pad, but the manufacturing quality just isn't up to scratch.
That is funny that Suzie steals that pad from you! Here in CO the Wolfpack is growing. By that I mean the people who howl at 8 pm to show their support to first responders.
I use a NeoAir, whatever the mid warmth one is. As I'm 5'6" I use a women's one as it's shorter and warmer so I have slightly more free space in my hike tent. I've wondered if I should have got the Sea2Summit one as it's thicker so potentially more comfortable and I'm an older guy. It probably doesn't get much below -10C here, the coldest temperature ever recorded in Australia is -23C at Charlott Pass in 1983. Not likely to ever venture into that. Hmm, mine doesn't have that inflation bag, I didn't know Thermarest had those, though I have seen S2S has them. I always put a heavier duty space blankets, on the ground under the tent floor, both for puncture protection and for warmth. That seems to add quite a lot to any airbed. Even warm on a completely uninsulated matt one time when it snowed during the night.
Great review, very helpful as well. I am thinking of buying one of these for myself so your review was helpful in making my decision. Many thanks. Regards shane.
I hear a lot of people mention the noise, but I've never found it a bother. My girlfriend sleeps on that pad and once you put a sleeping bag and a pillow on it the sound is negligible. Now the reason I moved away from Thermarest is their two-way valve which is not ideal. I think Exped's separate inflation and deflation flat valves are more practical and keeps the pad pretty much moisture and mold free. Thermarest's new Speed Valve doesn't address this issue and even looks like a possible failure point. The actual warmth of their pads on the other hand is admittedly supreme.
Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm Leaks out the WingLock Valve /// I got a new one and does the same! slow leak.. Test your Valve by using a bowl or pool or anything that you can get the Valve underwater, test closed and open and see if your mat does leak before you go on the trail.. I even pop the top off and i was surprised it does not seat down to the rubber gasket! This would be easy fix for them, they just need the inside of the cap to have the round plastic under the cap to set more into the Tube around the rubber seal.. wwjd
As a sleeping system, I d rather have one with lower R value, less noise, wider, less expensive(sts ultralight women large), paired with ONE three season sleeping bag, one closed form foldable pad for the winter which can also be used as butt pad. In that case I save money on sleeping bag and have a more suitable pad system. The store staff also told me that sts have much better service and warranty than thermarest. The online sleeping system finders are another example of comparison. A lot of times, to be frank, I feel some gears are too expensive for the owner to complain.
Luke , Can you do an updated UL air pad review? Im looking for a good solid piece of kit that UL and will be pairing it with a Quilt so needs a good R rateing...
Susie's XTherm - $150; R Value= 5.7 with the old but functional valve; bottom material 50D. Don't tell Susie the new XTherm cost $214.00; R Value=6.9, with a new easier to inflate WingLok valve; bottom material is 70D
You think that pad is expensive wages are the same in 1977 I bought a 3 bd 2 bath home with 1/2acre for $40,000 now days the house is $350.000 a new 1500 truck is $48,000 to 3500 $80,000. That's expensive
Thanks for the info. I am looking to upgrade my sleep pad (from a closed cell foam pad) and you have given me a few great points to consider. I never thought about the noise factor. Thermarest is a brand I trust as well. What other brands and/or models do you or your viewers suggest I look into?
It's perfect... the pad is 2.5" thick. I typically blow it up almost completely and then lay on my side. I lift my head and feet up to put alllll my weight on my hip and let out air until my hip just touches the ground. Then, when I lay my head and feet back on the pad, as in my normal sleeping position, my hip will rise about and inch off the ground. Now I have the pad as soft as it can be while keeping me off the ground.
+TheOutdoorGearReview - Hi there , you say the pad is good for summer .., but I am going from the USA to Terra Del Fuego (one year trip) .., I know this will be excellent for the cooler climes .., But will this be TOO HOT to use while in Tropical Central America , or will I be better of investing in the XLite model instead ?
Is it wise for someone to buy taller Mattress? I am 185 cm tall and i have no experience ever with such a product. Is better choice the Regular size (183cm) you think from experience? Thank you

I have had that same pad for 3 years now. I use it all year round and I love it
I'm wondering if it would be too hot for me in Georgia summers. Summer night lows are around 80 - 75. Would this be uncomfortably hot in your opinion?

I just bought one off of Amazon and they're still 260 fo the wide version. I'm replacing a 7 y/o scout thermarest.
yep my thermarest neoair venture is a must. I double it up with a z-lite pad underneath... extra cushion and puncture resistance.

well worth the price tag.
Great in depth review. Many thanks. I've just ordered one. Looking forward to trying it. All the best from the Isle of Wight, England. Regards, shane

Nice!
Late to the party, but don't those inflatables get tears and stuff all the time? Or are they pretty much vinyl bonded together?
Depends on the material really. The one Luke is reviewing is a 50 D fabric, which means it's pretty strong and rugged

This is a great pad but because of your issues, you may want a pad that is even thicker. Big Agnes has some good options with the Air Core. - Luke
