@@miksuko How does it work then? It will force the copyright responsibility on the platforms. The platforms need to make sure in that case that the videos won't contain any copyrighted material. TH-cam can't hire enough lawyers to go through all the millions of hours uploaded. This means that either all videos uploaded will be very few because they will be on a selected whitelist or an algorithm will judge and an algorithm can't decide on fair use/parody use/educational use/citation use. An algorithm will have to decide if something is fair use, which is actually a judge's job. The system will assume that you are guilty before it can decide that you are innocent.
Right now, Article 13 doesn't do much of anything because it has not enforcement with it. It asks EU member states to implement their own enforcement programs over the next two years. Until those laws are actually drawn up somewhere, we can't really will be like. In any case, it's super weird that the fear is that a law meant to take power away from companies like Google is feared by the people who are used by Google. Frankly, these laws are most likely not going to do much to TH-cam at all. They are more likely to go after things like Google Translate, which scours the internet and steals translations that people worked hard to make.
I think if TH-cam had a "View Previous Versions" button, it could work well. That way, nothing would truly be erased or hidden, and you could get the full context of what was changed and why.
Yeah, but the previous version of annotations on TH-cam was terrible. It didn't work with a lot of devices, including mobile and TV. It was overused by a lot of people, adding to annoyance. I agree though. They should have updated the annotation system rather than outright deleting it.
If they had it where only the uploaded of the video could add annotations it could work better. Make it similar to the “i” icon so it doesn’t flood the whole screen, make it compatible with mobile and tv, and bam. Perfect

Considering the fact TH-cam removed annotations and now is taking away viewer polls, I think they aren't super in interested in quality of life features that don't directly make them money (It's probably expensive server-wise to keep up those features, I just mourn them)
This is, in my opinion, the correct solution. Leave all the old videos viewable, but hidden (tho the ability to remove/blur/redact as needed). you'd have to click the little button in the bottom right (next to share and save) to see the different versions. That, and likely a policy of not fundamentally changing the content itself, but that would require moderating, which means this would have to be limited to verified channels. The same should apply for twitter and comments in general. Add the ability to edit, but keep the history. (I edited this reply to add this line for example.)

Entity Entertainment: exactly, had to scroll through quite a few comments before I found someone who pointed out the obvious. If you can just upload a new video, on the same URL, and keep the same title/stats/..., then it would be way too easy to just replace a video where you do something really nasty by a cleaned up version, and nobody would know (especially if you cull the comments and monitor them for as long as the average Internet warrior's attention span). Fupicat: I don't think having an edit list would work. Wikipedia has it. Who even looks at it? Hell, people can't even be arsed to read the bloody descriptions on YT. How many times haven't you seen people ask "where can I buy that?" or "what product did you use to do XYZ?" when the description is full of affiliate links to all the products used in the video? Furthermore, we're not talking about simple edits (cut a section, changed narration, added small section for clarity); we're talking about replacing an entire video. Which is how it would work, due to the fact that videos are edited locally before uploading. If that video happens to be 10 minutes long, and the replacement also, then you'd have to watch 20 minutes of video to see what changed. And you might still miss things. You, me, we might check a video's edit history (although honestly I doubt even I could be bothered), but most folks won't.

These are the times I miss annotations, which was the perfect solution for fixing mistakes until TH-cam axed it. EDIT: You can also edit comments and pins so that's a thing that works, but ultimately hurts the integrity of the original comment. (Since nobody knows what you originally said)
There is a logistical issue with that though. TH-cam would have to keep al those different versions of those videos up somewhere. I don't how much extra video storage that would cost them but maybe they wouldn't consider it worthwhile

Plus, some people will already replace their videos by re uploading and deleting. Deleting a TH-cam video doesn't actually delete it. Every video ever uploaded to TH-cam is still on TH-cam. When you delete a video it just becomes inaccessible to the public.

I don’t know. There are some people... who don’t like “know it alls,” and are fundamentally annoyed by the idea of people being curious and interested in various topics and able to pull out facts and figures at a moment’s notice. And because most of them realize saying, “I think it’s annoying that you like knowledge so much,” isn’t a good look, they try to pivot to find anything to latch onto to have a semblance of a fig leaf over their dislike of the person they’re attacking. This guy found a mistake Austin made and laid into him probably not because of how intensely he feels about ink mixes, but because Austin’s lifelong learner kind of mindset bugs the crap out of him and this is a credible error he can jump up and down on. Most people seem mildly interested with random information, but it’s not an interest of theirs, or they don’t hate it. Some people, like me, are really into minutia, factoids. But there’s a group who are just.... almost offended by it. Anyone who relishes information that much is seen to be a try hard, someone fronting, because they can’t reeeallly be that smart. When all the person is trying to do is relay information, not make a statement of intelligence. It’s really weird, and it always takes me aback when I run into it. I enjoy talking to people about random topics I find interesting, and the conversations that come up because of it are usually well worth the time and fun to me. But people who kind of... keep engaging you and eventually explode because of how indignant they are because of your newly acquired know it all status, they are definitely people to watch out for. It’s a bit startling when they go off. It’s not enough to say you have very different opinions on what a good conversation is, or that we choose to have very different hobbies. They have to just... lay into you and list the reasons why you’re actually a joke and imposter and a try hard and just like their mother, who uses knowledge to make other people feel small, etc. They are dead set on making their problem into your problem. I hate that happened to Austin, but with his channel being this big, I’m surprised I’ve not seen more people hating on him about it. “Stop trying to sound like you know everything,” and the like. I’m glad it’s as positive as it is; a lot of times this kind of content can get hit by people who just... fundamentally dislike the lifelong learner attitude and kind of hate watch. I’m glad he’s not letting them get him down. It should remain their problem and not his.
I don't know about the ink thing, but the heartstone video was pretty bad. I don't even know much about the game, yet i still noticed lots of wrong information in the video which weren't just "mistakes", they were actual fake facts made to make the game seem bad. Then i read the comments and i guess that video just shouldn't be made at all. I just hope not every video from this guy is as fake as that one.

He's a high profile content creator, and as such he can speak with fairness about the general creator's experience - a correction/update loop would be a big problem, not because of your own decision, but because that option itself creates certain expectations from your audience. As a Graphic Designer, adding Cyan to the black to make the black to Rich Black to make the blacker and pop out more for print but that's less common now and it really depends on the print company and machine they are using. Some want to add 10% to the black of CMY but some have other way to make it more black. But the general rule you don't want to go over 300% of CMYK but that has change to with digital which I haven't don't too much anymore because most of my work is digital.
I would personally love a video replacement option, not for myself but for you guys. I feel like the best way to address this is with a few caveats- 1) The person attempting to change the upload has a certain amount of subscribers - ensuring no viral video or one off success gets edited later down the line. 2) A time constraint for the edited clip. Something like ~15s in either direction. This ensures the video is at least similar in length to the previous video, long enough to add some text to correct edits but not long enough to add a random sponsor 3) An algorithm that ensures a large portion of the new video is similar/has the exact same or close frames for ~80% of the video. Of course, this limits the ability of a creator to edit larger mistakes, but I feel like at that point they aren’t doing an adequate job with quality control - given the subscriber rule above, we can assume that YT is most of their profession, and videos shouldn’t be haphazardly thrown together. Anyway those are just some thoughts on how to maybe implement a video replacement system that addresses some of the concerns of the video. I love your work btw :)
I think the re-upload feature could break the system by using the metrics and connections the algorithm has made about a video and reapplying it to whatever video you want at the time, maybe something easier quality or you want a video to hit a new demographic. So TH-cam wouldn't be able to trust it's own system to know if something was accurate and if people wanted to watch it or not. That's the biggest issue I can see off the top of my head.
Elton John and the Jonas Brothers TH-cam pages also managed to get their videos replaced with remasterized 4k version of their videos from years ago. Examples: Elton John I'm still standing, Jonas Brothers SOS, Burning Up...
What if TH-cam keep a backlog of the original video, such as a show original video button. That way abuse can be caught in a very provable way. Also add terms against adding sponsors post video upload

The thing is that TH-cam *used* to have a feature to modify videos with clarifications or corrections: annotations. Sure, it wasn't perfect, and people had a tendency to misuse them, but it's a whole lot better than relying on someone to look through the description or comments to find the video's errata.

Couple options. A few other TH-camrs do a correction/update video every couple videos to address things they've discovered were wrong or something like that. Generally it's pretty informal and doesn't require a whole lot of editing like a full feature. Might be an option going forward, but doesn't address non-subscribers just stopping by and watching one (possibly erroneous) video. Another would be to start keeping postbins or something similar in regards to incorrect information or alterations to the information contained in a video. Adding a simple disclaimer to the beginning or end of the video directing people to such a thing would help. It would be easier to format, and seem more formal of an response than a pinned TH-cam comment. I am however, strongly against being able to replace videos. I don't think comparing a video of substantial length to edited social media comments is fair.
Annotations used to be the popular way to fix errata, but they're gone. Cards can do something similar, I guess, but they are not always as obvious. One other issue with the idea of replacing videos is that it could remove the context of some of the comments - if you make a mistake and the discussion in the comments turns into a civil discussion of the incorrect details (hey, it could happen!), replacing the video deprives later arrivals of the context. I think you've already got the right balance - if it's not a huge mistake that ruins the whole video, leave it there and leave a pinned comment and/or notes in the description - anyone who really cares should read that. Anyone who doesn't bother can just be ignored.

Another example of "TH-cam allowed replacing a video", TH-cam Rewind 2013 originally included a music mix using Psy's Gentleman but a few days later, they replaced the video in the same upload, editing out the song due to some rights issues. So not only Apple in the past year, TH-cam has had this functionality for at least their own videos since 2013.

I saw a video once where someone pointed out that Google had uploaded a video back when they had the old logo, but then when they updated to the current logo they replaced the video with the new logo. I suck at explaining things, but basically the video was uploaded in like 2011, and it originally had the logo they had at the time, but now that 2011 video has the current logo. So they do have a way to do it (like you said with the Apple video).
They do allow some companies and artists to replace videos, Aha’s Take On Me video was recently replaced with a 4K video version, as was Robert Palmer’s Addicted To Love. You might say same video, mostly yes but it’s a different video file they’re uploading to the same URL.
You could've mentioned that CapitainSparklez swapped the TNT song *in place* when it got copyright problems, and then changed that back to the original later. I was quite confused when I looked up the video and noticed I had left a thumbs down, until I remembered I downvoted the changed version. Not only Apple.
Just have some sort of filter that determines how close the replacement video is to the original, and if it is within, say, 95%, then allow the replacement. (this would avoid tacking ads on at the end since most people just want to fix a few minor things that wouldn't change the overall video that much anyways)
Forget audience expectations. Forget integrity. Forget technical limitations. What about the ability to call a project done? If the "Upload" button isn't a finish button, I can't ever let that go. It's never truly "finished", and the slew of comments would eventually break through my wish to get on with life. Not that I've finished a video in years or an actual video...ever. Leave all the old videos viewable, but hidden (tho the ability to remove/blur/redact as needed). you'd have to click the little button in the bottom right (next to share and save) to see the different versions. That, and likely a policy of not fundamentally changing the content itself, but that would require moderating, which means this would have to be limited to verified channels.
The same should apply for twitter and comments in general. Add the ability to edit, but keep the history. (I edited this reply to add this line for example.)

It's not like you could see the previous version of a comment, so even if they added that they wouldn't add it.
I believe a correction with a pinned comment is the best solution since nobody reads descriptions anymore and they are more likely to look in the comment section.

Entity Entertainment: exactly, had to scroll through quite a few comments before I found someone who pointed out the obvious. If you can just upload a new video, on the same URL, and keep the same title/stats/..., then it would be way too easy to just replace a video where you do something really nasty by a cleaned up version, and nobody would know (especially if you cull the comments and monitor them for as long as the average Internet warrior's attention span).
Fupicat: I don't think having an edit list would work. Wikipedia has it. Who even looks at it? Hell, people can't even be arsed to read the bloody descriptions on YT. How many times haven't you seen people ask "where can I buy that?" or "what product did you use to do XYZ?" when the description is full of affiliate links to all the products used in the video? Furthermore, we're not talking about simple edits (cut a section, changed narration, added small section for clarity); we're talking about replacing an entire video. Which is how it would work, due to the fact that videos are edited locally before uploading. If that video happens to be 10 minutes long, and the replacement also, then you'd have to watch 20 minutes of video to see what changed. And you might still miss things. You, me, we might check a video's edit history (although honestly I doubt even I could be bothered), but most folks won't.

These are the times I miss annotations, which was the perfect solution for fixing mistakes until TH-cam axed it.
EDIT: You can also edit comments and pins so that's a thing that works, but ultimately hurts the integrity of the original comment. (Since nobody knows what you originally said)

Plus, some people will already replace their videos by re uploading and deleting. Deleting a TH-cam video doesn't actually delete it. Every video ever uploaded to TH-cam is still on TH-cam. When you delete a video it just becomes inaccessible to the public.

I don’t know. There are some people... who don’t like “know it alls,” and are fundamentally annoyed by the idea of people being curious and interested in various topics and able to pull out facts and figures at a moment’s notice. And because most of them realize saying, “I think it’s annoying that you like knowledge so much,” isn’t a good look, they try to pivot to find anything to latch onto to have a semblance of a fig leaf over their dislike of the person they’re attacking. This guy found a mistake Austin made and laid into him probably not because of how intensely he feels about ink mixes, but because Austin’s lifelong learner kind of mindset bugs the crap out of him and this is a credible error he can jump up and down on.
Most people seem mildly interested with random information, but it’s not an interest of theirs, or they don’t hate it. Some people, like me, are really into minutia, factoids. But there’s a group who are just.... almost offended by it. Anyone who relishes information that much is seen to be a try hard, someone fronting, because they can’t reeeallly be that smart. When all the person is trying to do is relay information, not make a statement of intelligence. It’s really weird, and it always takes me aback when I run into it. I enjoy talking to people about random topics I find interesting, and the conversations that come up because of it are usually well worth the time and fun to me. But people who kind of... keep engaging you and eventually explode because of how indignant they are because of your newly acquired know it all status, they are definitely people to watch out for. It’s a bit startling when they go off. It’s not enough to say you have very different opinions on what a good conversation is, or that we choose to have very different hobbies. They have to just... lay into you and list the reasons why you’re actually a joke and imposter and a try hard and just like their mother, who uses knowledge to make other people feel small, etc. They are dead set on making their problem into your problem.
I hate that happened to Austin, but with his channel being this big, I’m surprised I’ve not seen more people hating on him about it. “Stop trying to sound like you know everything,” and the like. I’m glad it’s as positive as it is; a lot of times this kind of content can get hit by people who just... fundamentally dislike the lifelong learner attitude and kind of hate watch. I’m glad he’s not letting them get him down. It should remain their problem and not his.

I don't know about the ink thing, but the heartstone video was pretty bad. I don't even know much about the game, yet i still noticed lots of wrong information in the video which weren't just "mistakes", they were actual fake facts made to make the game seem bad.
Then i read the comments and i guess that video just shouldn't be made at all. I just hope not every video from this guy is as fake as that one.

Dai Because the common usage of “irony” isn’t really correct, I’d not call it irony, but the coincidence of the video about reuploads being reuploaded created a state of cognitive dissonance for that OP, resulting in a feeling of humor. Thus, posting a joke. Humor is subjective, so it’s no matter that you may not have found it funny. However in that case, you don’t have to post your confusion or disapproval. That was entirely up to you. Hopefully over time, we will all make better choices.

He's a high profile content creator, and as such he can speak with fairness about the general creator's experience - a correction/update loop would be a big problem, not because of your own decision, but because that option itself creates certain expectations from your audience.

Why would somebody care so much that cyan makes black blacker?
As a Graphic Designer, adding Cyan to the black to make the black to Rich Black to make the blacker and pop out more for print but that's less common now and it really depends on the print company and machine they are using. Some want to add 10% to the black of CMY but some have other way to make it more black. But the general rule you don't want to go over 300% of CMYK but that has change to with digital which I haven't don't too much anymore because most of my work is digital.

I would personally love a video replacement option, not for myself but for you guys. I feel like the best way to address this is with a few caveats-
1) The person attempting to change the upload has a certain amount of subscribers - ensuring no viral video or one off success gets edited later down the line.
2) A time constraint for the edited clip. Something like ~15s in either direction. This ensures the video is at least similar in length to the previous video, long enough to add some text to correct edits but not long enough to add a random sponsor
3) An algorithm that ensures a large portion of the new video is similar/has the exact same or close frames for ~80% of the video. Of course, this limits the ability of a creator to edit larger mistakes, but I feel like at that point they aren’t doing an adequate job with quality control - given the subscriber rule above, we can assume that YT is most of their profession, and videos shouldn’t be haphazardly thrown together.
Anyway those are just some thoughts on how to maybe implement a video replacement system that addresses some of the concerns of the video.

I think the re-upload feature could break the system by using the metrics and connections the algorithm has made about a video and reapplying it to whatever video you want at the time, maybe something easier quality or you want a video to hit a new demographic. So TH-cam wouldn't be able to trust it's own system to know if something was accurate and if people wanted to watch it or not. That's the biggest issue I can see off the top of my head.
Elton John and the Jonas Brothers TH-cam pages also managed to get their videos replaced with remasterized 4k version of their videos from years ago. Examples: Elton John I'm still standing, Jonas Brothers SOS, Burning Up...
What if TH-cam keep a backlog of the original video, such as a show original video button. That way abuse can be caught in a very provable way.
Also add terms against adding sponsors post video upload

The thing is that TH-cam *used* to have a feature to modify videos with clarifications or corrections: annotations. Sure, it wasn't perfect, and people had a tendency to misuse them, but it's a whole lot better than relying on someone to look through the description or comments to find the video's errata.

Couple options.
A few other TH-camrs do a correction/update video every couple videos to address things they've discovered were wrong or something like that. Generally it's pretty informal and doesn't require a whole lot of editing like a full feature. Might be an option going forward, but doesn't address non-subscribers just stopping by and watching one (possibly erroneous) video.
Another would be to start keeping postbins or something similar in regards to incorrect information or alterations to the information contained in a video. Adding a simple disclaimer to the beginning or end of the video directing people to such a thing would help. It would be easier to format, and seem more formal of an response than a pinned TH-cam comment.
I am however, strongly against being able to replace videos. I don't think comparing a video of substantial length to edited social media comments is fair.
Annotations used to be the popular way to fix errata, but they're gone. Cards can do something similar, I guess, but they are not always as obvious.
One other issue with the idea of replacing videos is that it could remove the context of some of the comments - if you make a mistake and the discussion in the comments turns into a civil discussion of the incorrect details (hey, it could happen!), replacing the video deprives later arrivals of the context.
I think you've already got the right balance - if it's not a huge mistake that ruins the whole video, leave it there and leave a pinned comment and/or notes in the description - anyone who really cares should read that. Anyone who doesn't bother can just be ignored.
I never know what Austin will talk about next but I'm always excited about it nonetheless

Another example of "TH-cam allowed replacing a video", TH-cam Rewind 2013 originally included a music mix using Psy's Gentleman but a few days later, they replaced the video in the same upload, editing out the song due to some rights issues. So not only Apple in the past year, TH-cam has had this functionality for at least their own videos since 2013.

I saw a video once where someone pointed out that Google had uploaded a video back when they had the old logo, but then when they updated to the current logo they replaced the video with the new logo. I suck at explaining things, but basically the video was uploaded in like 2011, and it originally had the logo they had at the time, but now that 2011 video has the current logo. So they do have a way to do it (like you said with the Apple video).

They do allow some companies and artists to replace videos, Aha’s Take On Me video was recently replaced with a 4K video version, as was Robert Palmer’s Addicted To Love. You might say same video, mostly yes but it’s a different video file they’re uploading to the same URL.
You could've mentioned that CapitainSparklez swapped the TNT song *in place* when it got copyright problems, and then changed that back to the original later. I was quite confused when I looked up the video and noticed I had left a thumbs down, until I remembered I downvoted the changed version.

Just have some sort of filter that determines how close the replacement video is to the original, and if it is within, say, 95%, then allow the replacement. (this would avoid tacking ads on at the end since most people just want to fix a few minor things that wouldn't change the overall video that much anyways)
Forget audience expectations. Forget integrity. Forget technical limitations. What about the ability to call a project done? If the "Upload" button isn't a finish button, I can't ever let that go. It's never truly "finished", and the slew of comments would eventually break through my wish to get on with life.
