I don't think this makes you look like you have problems. I think it makes you look like a perfectly well adjusted, down to earth, man. Seeing you describe your relationship with tools, and in fact, the people that gifted them to you, is quite simply, delightful. Here you have a man, relating his tool stories, and unabashedly, missing loved friends. The world could do with a few more like you, Scott. Thank you for sharing your stories, and being a genuine man.
    Your friend, Jeff.

Thanks for putting my thoughts into words. I couldn't have said it better. This video is a beautiful hommage to those mentors who gifted him tools and so much more. If this was to be seen as ramblings from "a man with real problems" as he said, then we'd have become a truly irredeemable society. And i don't believe that for a bit.

I agree wholeheartedly! I had a lump in my throat watching this video, thinking of the tools that I have had handed down to me by my father and both grandfathers. They occupy a special place in my collection and my heart, and every time i use them, I am reminded of the person who's hand held them before mine. I will someday pass them on to my sons as well.

I had a little cry watching this. I am a man who earns his living using these tools. It's heartening to hear of others who closely identify the humanity , the memory , and the sweat of heritage that passed from a previous generation to one following. Sadly this probably stops here and goes no further.

Some tools that don’t work as good as some new stuff but I’m used to them and through the years , they just feel right. My tools will be passed to my son when the time comes. Tools do have souls.

I'm not much of a DIY, but I have been adding tools to my garage lately; a power drill, an orbital sander, chain saw, and a circular saw is next on my wish list. What I loved about this video is your connection to people the tools bring you. My father gave me his old pick, hoe, axe, shovel, sickle, machete, and a set of wrenches. Every time i touch them, use them, I think about how special that these physical objects instantly bring memories of my Dad. He was a had worker and an inspiration to me. He was someone who grew up on a sugar cane plantation on Hawaii island, with an eight grade education, he joined the plantation workforce. He went into active duty during WW2, enjoyed a career in the Army until he retired after 20+ years, and then worked in Civil Service until he retired. He and my mother also helped my two brothers and myself get four year college degrees. M intend to give these tool to my children and hopefully the will understand how special the tools connect to three generations.

I respect you. You are pragmatic in that you recognize these are only tools. But you also acknowledge that these items help you accomplish the work you need to do (to support your family) and they facilitate your ability to craft and express your art. To value the history, quality, and legacy of these tools, tells me that you are an exceptional and thoughtful craftsman, and this world needs more skillful artisans who wish to create fine works. Thank you for sharing your viewpoint, and for inspiring other future builders.

I don’t visit the channel enough but as a craftsman myself, I am humbled every single time I watch the channel. I’ve always been envious of you generational fellas. On the contrary, this video makes you look like a kind and thoughtful man who appreciates more than just the face value of things. I can relate, I was fortunate enough to inherit my grandfather's tools and giant Mac box in which they live and they are priceless to me. Every time I am lucky enough to need one of them, I think of the greatest man I have ever known and many memories. His tools are primarily mechanic's, metal worker's, and pipe fitter's tools with some other odds and ends. Classic precision measuring tools many decades old, calipers, dial indicators, etc. are so beautiful and so well made. Aside from his tools, I have sentimental values assigned to most of my other tools. Tools are such a unique and dynamic object with stories to tell. Great video Sir!

I knew a man once like you who was a skilled auto mechanic. Bob has moved on into eternity but the information stored in his brain concerning automobile mechanics was coveted by me and I used to joke with him to leave me his brain when he died. This man grew up in Detroit and worked in automotive plants, worked in automobile dealerships as a mechanic, owned his own service station, worked as a pit mechanic on the race car circuit and at the end of his life, repaired single moms and widows’ cars for no charge in his driveway. That’s where he taught me. I was the muscle his old frame had lost and I soaked up all I could. I thank God for men like you & Bob.
He did leave me with an appreciation for working honestly with one’s hands, a job well done and a collection of Model A and Model T tools. Perhaps one day I could have the privilege of meeting you too.

I want folks to understand the importance of not only learning the remarkable skills that Scott is blessed with; but for me, more. importantly; the rich & deep values that Scott brings forth. I have such little tolerance for folks who even as older people, don't understand the importance of being "good".We have the ability to do "goodness".We, especially with what the world seems to be experiencing, have the ability to spread sunlight, not darkness which seems to surround us. I watched the video re: the Jordan Green/Green home. Both men featured. are beautiful men.I actually cried knowing the intense integrity in both men. Let's all emulate them & hopefully make our world more bright.

I got shop full of tools for my company, shipping containers filled to the ceiling, tool trailers jammed... and in watching this I thought to myself everything I have was bought for either at auction or retail, no real sentimental value to anything. And then you pulled out that Square, I have one exactly like yours, its at least 80 years old most of the numbers and lines are faint faint from wear. Shes completely useless, cant use it for anything its so worn down, but my grandfather bought it new and I will never part with her.
Great videos, you're as wholesome and genuine as they come.

The tools that mean the most to came from my grandfather or my father-in-law. Everything else can be replaced. I admired and loved both of these gentlemen. From the two axes from my grandfather to the Work bench and tool box from my father-in-law. And all the other small tools, files, planes, etc. They mean the world to me and I think of them every time I use one of their tools they passed on to me. Thank you Old Timers. I still love you both.

Great video from a real person with a admirable personality. I lost all my tools like you are showing here with there individual personal attachments by a contractor who took advantage of my mother older mind and bending Canadian law. That being said my number one tool from 1 to 10 and much more is all of the knowledge my FATHER took the time to teach me....... In my every day of working and teaching others I have so many times said to myself and out loud at times Thanks DAD ! Like he is still here watching me by my side.... A lot of my friends in my life were much older then me and took the time to teach me so many things and I too miss them.....

This video shows how much you appreciate your mentors and their good influence in your life. It shows your appreciation for the history of people working with both wood and metal. It shows how much you value hard work and fine craftsmanship. It also emphasizes the value you place on family and friends. This man has made a truly inspiring video that shows his love for life. I don’t see any problems with that. Society needs more teachers like him. Thank you sir.

I'm so glad you mentioned always to put a plane down on its side. That brought a big smile to my face, I was watching your video by myself and grinned like an idiot. I have seen so many people, even in teaching videos, putting them face down like its the most natural thing and every time I cringe, it almost hurts. I did my apprenticeship as a shop carpenter 44 years ago, in France. I was lucky to learn with good people. The first 6 months, you weren't allowed to use the machines and there were few power tools available. So basically everything you did was with hand tools. You weren't very productive, for sure, but they didn't care, they gave you jobs where it didn't matter so much and they just wanted you to learn properly. And the first thing they drilled into me was, you never, ever, put a plane flat down on its face, not ever, or else. Same thing with wood chisels. They were tough but they were like gold, I still dream about my old teacher.

When I move to the US, I wanted to build myself a little shop which could never do in Germany so i looked around on craigslist for used tools because most of the time you do not have a lot of money after immigrating to a country on the other side of the earth. I was slightly puzzled by a very old hand saw for 50$, and did some research. Turns out old Disston saws are worth a lot of money. When going to get an Axe and some stuff I saw a box of saws and bought 3 of them 10 bucks each. I didn't do too much research other wise i might have gotten better ones, but I started restoring them. First one turned out to be a Warranted Superior, which is not very special but it had a beautiful stamp on the blade with a steam train with 999 on the coal wagon. I estimate it to be from around late 1880. I would love to let someone who knows the history better judge it. But anyway it will remain my favorite tool after putting hours of blood sweat and tears in it, problem is I gave it to my sister because i thought she as carpenter would appreciate it more.

@121bham, No I don't think it is a stupid thing to say. I've been there and done that [not downed tools and been late late for dinner] and have paid in part by doing so - by losing relationships and possibly valuable moments with my children. "To know what is most valuable or important.." I think is what Wire Tamer was trying to imply.
Anyway it struck a note with me when I saw it. Made me think what I have, or may have, lost through my [probably misguided] single-minded selfishness.

"What is your favourite tool?" is actually a ridiculous question. A "favourite" tool is the one best suited to the task at hand. My block plane is my "favourite" tool for its intended purpose. It is not my "favourite" tool to drive nails. (Canadian spelling: favourite)

That said, if I were to select a measuring tool as my favourite, it would be my steel Vernier caliper (not one of the cheap plastic ones now available). Named after Pierre Vernier, the French engineer who invented it almost 400 years ago, a Vernier caliper is a piece of genius. We learned their theory and use in high-school shop class. Today, they are a mystery to many tradespeople, although their utter simplicity is their greatest attribute. No batteries to wear out. No mechanical intricacies to foul or damage. It allows me, with unaided eye, to measure within 1/128" - more than enough for any work I do.

+Ade Larsen: An oddly mean-spirited comment, if you are suggesting (on what evidence?) that I am a "butcher" (ie: a clumsy, unskilled craftsperson). I own a vintage "Vemco" drafting machine ("Detailer 3500") and use it regularly. Among my drafting instruments are several mechanical pencils, assorted squares, scales, compasses, templates, French curves... I know how to use these drawing tools, and I know how to build the things I draw. My favourite tool is a pencil.

    • @adelarsen9776
      @adelarsen9776 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dear Robert,
I was simply referring to a butcher. You know ? they cut up meat and sell it at the butchers shop. Butchers use pencils.
It was a totally harmless comment. I was simply drawing attention to a trade which uses pencils all the time - butchers.
Ever watched a butcher ? he has 6 knives and a pencil.
Totally harmless sir, you missed It as it flew over your head :-)
I am sure you are a competent drafter and tradesman :-)
