This channel is an insane amount of free knowledge. It really shows that with the smallest amount of diligence u can find life changing amounts of free information online. I'm 34 and damn if I had these videos when I was 16 my life would've been different. I hope young kids nowadays learn how to appreciate this tyoe of content. Thank you

I love the series. I watch it with my Dad and it reminds him of my Grandfather. Major difference is Grandpa was a bit of a drunk and a real rough framer great with stairs. So its fun to watch the right way things are done and hear about past experiences my dad went through on the jobsite as a kid with Gramps. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and giving me a lil something to share with my Dad.

Person 1: I wish you lived near me!
      Person 2: Your home sucks!
It's completely unnecessary to be so uncivil and rude, Matty. From what I've seen of Scott in these videos, he'd never be so unmannered as to insult somebody's home, out of the blue, in casual conversation. You shouldn't either.
It's not a joke, it's not banter, there's no "sense of humor" at play. It's just rude and discourteous to your host and his other guests here.

Rod Fitzsimmons Frey he was making an observation that one country has different rules about construction than the other and is a better work environment. Why does that offend you, it may be true? Should people be forced to work in countries regardless of how difficult it's made by politicians and bureaucrats? No need to be offended.

    • @iamjimgroth
      @iamjimgroth 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Matty Ice Maybe that's not very relevant. It's not like I suggested he actually moved here. I just wished he already lived here.
But, since you brought it up I can tell you an example of what we get for our taxes. A healthy and very well educated workforce. The are tons of other benefits as well, but if you really would like to learn about this I think a TH-cam content section might not be the best forum. Either way, I will do my best to answer any questions on the subject.

Can't agree with you more, worked with my grandfather 50 plus years ago, he always made sure the job site was cleaner when he left than when he got there. That has stuck with me all these years. Also had to clean all the tools before they went back on the truck. At the time I'm sure I griped about it but it didn't take me long to learn the wisdom of his ways.

Also worth mentioning-- if you manage to spray your skin with a pressure washer you need to go to the emergency room. High pressure water injection is no joke, and it can cause major injuries even if they aren't immediately apparent.

Does not matter if the wand is 3'. You can spray yourself in the leg, or spray your buddy, or spray your own hand if your fiddling with the nozzle with your hand on the trigger. Power washers and airless paint sprayer can inject liquid, and it can cause huge damage.

Clean job site separates the professionals from the wannabes. Spraying form oil on outside of forms is unusual though, as is using a pressure washer prior to stripping (we'd hose down forms before concrete set up - that's the easiest time to clean forms and aids in curing). Never allow concrete trucks/pumps to dump in one large pile - make them use a shovel to spread it around - or use blade/bucket of piece of equipment to spread thinly. Excess concrete can make a nice roadbase material if you separate the concrete into mostly aggregate. Otherwise you end up with a pile of hardened concrete you then need to break up and dispose of - as is shown in the video.
Typically, forms are stripped and most of the excess concrete falls away during that process (washing down forms right after the pour is finished dramatically lessens the amount of cleaning necessary).. When we stacked forms, that's when inside faces were scraped and oiled in preparation of the next job. In this situation, where you were borrowing the forms (likely w/a friendly-contractor price), made sense to be very careful and considerate.

A tidy workplace is a safe workplace. I firmly believe the adage. Concrete can be messy and sometimes challenging to clean up. Get on it right away, it pays off in the long run. I've been on jobs where a homeowner/client has been surprised at how i often use a broom or vacuum to tidy up. Nothing worse than twisting an ankle on an off-cut hiding in sawdust. Same thing for tripping over a lump of solid concrete. Keeping things tidy means you get a look at the whole site and can spot potential hazards. Additionally, if you tidy as you go, the end clean-up is simple. Clients appreciate it.

I remember all the incredible messes I used to make when I first started driving concrete trucks. On big jobsites there would be an area set aside or not and we would reverse the drum and spray it out to our hearts content. Then a law got passed which to tell the truth wasn't too popular but was based on the idea that the process of making the portland that goes into the concrete, releases chromium into the mix and if you wash that chromium out onto the ground, it can seep into the ground water. Now I use a self contained washout system that has a bucket that hangs on the end of my chute with a hose that runs to a trash pump and the pump sends it into the drum of the miver truck. Back at the plant, we have a weir that separates the fines from the water and we can reuse the water for rinsing out at the end of the day. Frankly, I love the way it is now. I can rinse off my chutes and do a wash down pretty much anywhere I want to. No messes no pissed off customers. Plus if it rains, I can use the hose and trash pump with the hose to the drum disconected as a vacuum to get water out of flooded footings.

In all the years I ran framing and remodeling crews, I was first on the job walking it, seeing if there were scheduling problems, or possible safety issues while thinking through that days work. At the end of the day, I always picked up the drops and swept the area we were working in. Often found small tools and usable hardware in a pile of sawdust. Yessir, even doing forms and concrete work, as my dear mother used to say, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.”

Two colleagues, later good friends, and I, were the service crew for a home builder... Took care of whatever little things occured after a year of use. One did the preliminary check, made a list and passed it on to us other 2. One brick layer/tile guy, and me - the carpenter.
The general motto was that the only way the homeowner should be able to tell that we'd been there, was that whatever was on the list, was fixed. And so the the tile guy was out on a minor repair, set up work station outside to limit the amount of dust inside the house to a minimum. He finished the job, started packing up his van and cleaning on his way out of the house. Last stop was the outside workstation, and not to leave any marks on the pavers, he ran them over with the shop vac. A woman walking her dog saw this and stopped to look at the end of the driveway... staring basically. He sees this out of the corner of his eye, whips around and starts vacuuming the lawn as well. The woman shook her head and disappeared in a hurry... in disbelief!

Pressure washers sure can make for some 'fun' workplace accidents. Especially if you get some of the higher capacity industrial units that put the little home use ones to shame. Have seen more than a few broken noses from new guys who 'know what they're doing' getting their hands on them.
They can also move a lot of material around in a hurry. If you're standing there shouting at someone while holding the trigger on one, you can do 'fun and interesting' things, like ripping through part of your own boot, wearing a hole in wood, or making very interesting patterns in dirt.

Jovan Bergh Nothing about job site or pressure washing is sanitary... relates to health, not concrete or cleanliness. From French sanitaire, from Latin sanitas(“health”)

In order to be sanitary, it must be clean correct ?? So I believe the usage is correct, if not I do not think many who observe this video will raise a fuss over it !!!!

Chris Nelson Not necessarily, cleaning just means removing mess/clutter. As he said sanitary refers to health, so something can be cleaned but not sanitized (i.e rinsed but still have harmful bacterium attached), and vise versa.
