I just recently watched spirited away in theaters with one of my friends. Spirited Away is my favorite Studio Ghibli film and it was so nice to see it in theaters with one of my really good friends.
@@NicoMartok So, true story, the first time I saw that episode (when it released or shortly thereafter), I was just a young'un (around 11 or 12); it was nighttime and storming, so it was pitch-black outside, with the intermittent claps of thunder. I was the only one in the house at the time. After watching that segment, I needed to go to the basement to grab something out of the freezer down there. The basement light was an old circular fluorescent light with a weak starter, so it would: a) flicker a lot, and b) not always light up. When I tried to go downstairs, it was one of the times when the light didn't want to light up; I was freaking terrified to go downstairs. I went up to my bedroom to grab the brightest flashlight I had, and I was still scared to go downstairs. Holy shit, that episode was so damn unsettling for 11-year-old me.
I'm surprised the Rape/murder scene from Sword art online Alicization or SAO season 3 if you prefer wasn't on here. That episode had so much graphic imagery, that we got a warning before the episode started. Then again they probably had to avoid it to avoid getting demonitized.
I think that one just falls under graphic rather than scary. Cause don't even pretend you weren't sitting there going "Ah shit this is happening, where's Kirito when they need him. Oh hey Kirito! Kill his ass!"
@@kaimagnus5760 there's a few things to consider though. First being the warning. Which is practically never done so at the start of the episode you're thinking "Oh god shit's about to go down" second the build up to it is definitely scary with things like that storm and the ominous background music. And while the attempted rape is disturbing, the death of lord fuck wad(I can't remember his name right now so that's what i'm calling him). Is equally horrific. We see both of his hands cut off with blood spewing everywhere including the victims while he begs for his life and does this wierd glitchy thing before bleeding to death. And remember even though he's a digital entity, he's still a fluctlight like Eugeo and everyone else. So Kirito willingly killed the closest thing to a sentient being in the series. It's pretty dang dark.
@@dustinvance243 Fair points. I'd just come off of watching Goblin Slayer when I saw that episode so I was probably desensitized on top of seeing it coming.
Yeah, much agreed; that episode was intense. I think SAO ran into some controversy or something over it, reason for the warning. But honestly, I think the horror of it really made it work. Like, it made me wish they hadn't already played the 'rape card' twice earlier in the series, because when you take it on its own, it really worked well for *that* scene. Showing that even in this perfect world where everyone automatically follows the law, people can still be bad, and it goes to prove just how human the fluctlights really are. But for me, at least, it was also unsettling because you were rooting for Kirito to obliterate this guy but then you remember that teaching the Fluctlights how to murder was exactly what Rath wanted... OH YEAH And let's not forget Eugeo overcoming his code and his right eye blowing out. Epic, but yeah, that was a thing
The most horrifying scene to me in MHA was when the 5 who went to rescue Bakugo got scared shitless by All for one. Their faces shook me so much to see them so terrified.
I was pretty young when I watched Spirited Away with my older sister(they introduced me to Studio Ghibli) and all I felt was "creeepyyyy!". I didn't know how to process stuff like sometimes scary and sometimes not so scary cartoons.
Reads title : Wonder where Madoka Magica will be in the the top there Watches and see it in horonable mentions : NANI???? See the top three and agrees.
That Cell scene.... My gawd, I was 9 when I saw that the first time, my little brother was 7. We were actually not allowed to watch Dragon Ball Z, our mother had deemed it too violent. So we would sneak watch it before school with the volume low while listening for our mom's alarm clock. I'll never forget that morning, we were watching DBZ as usual when THAT happened. In all it's uncensored horrific detail. I guess YTV didn't mind traumatizing kids. LOL My brother and I literally ran away from the TV screaming and crying. Which of course woke our mom up. So we ended up in trouble, along with an "I told you so!" from mom. We even had nightmares afterwards, but we still kept sneaking DBZ every morning. Although after that whenever Cell used his tail we would turn the TV off out of fright.
I can't bring myself to rewatch the Mad Pierrot episode. Seriously, that disturbed me as a kid. The Cell draining the rich guy scene still haunts me to this day, too.
Cell killing a rich guy like that is possibly more terrifying than any death from Doctor Who. At least, in Doctor Who, there are some deaths that can be forgotten about because time travel was involved.
Good thing that when Viz Media acquired the Dubbing rights to Sailor Moon R and S as well as Sailor Moon in general all of the censored scenes you mentioned were uncensored and shown the way they were meant to be seen.
There are two scenes from Baccano that are fairly terrifying: 1. When Claire kills Russo. 2. When Dallas gets locked into a barrel & thrown into the Hudson River to continually drown for all eternity
The cell scene while I understand why you have it on here that is part of his charm and why he is my favorite DBZ villian. Cell wasnt super strong at the start so he relied on fear and sneaking around to get to his targets to absorb them to gain power
It also cemented Cell as a monster that couldn't be reasoned with and had to be destroyed at all costs. Goku gave Frieza a chance, Piccalo and Vegeta both became good guys, and Buu got reincarnated. But Cell stands out as the one enemy Goku never even tried to see the good in.
I also like how they set up Cell with that news report of the missing people in Ginger Town and then something off-camera kills the news crew. Reminds me of Aliens, when the marines first encounter the xenomorphs and all you see through their cameras are them losing their shit/getting killed off and yet you can't see onscreen what exactly is killing them.
@@WarmLusamine One of Frieza's transformations was inspired by the Xenomorphs, his 3rd form shared way too many similarities to them for it to be coincidence.
Yep, same, that scene from episode 65 where Magne died was just about as terrifying as I thought it would be and it's just going to get better :D But I do agree with that mall scene being pretty scary though. Just...in a different way. It's kind of different categories of horror, I think: teetering off a cliff where the bad thing *might* happen, seeing in terrifying detail the bad thing *actually* happen, or seeing something that mostly happens off-screen but still being thoroughly chilled because you're *imagining* what just happened. I knew they weren't going to kill Izuku, but the fact that Shigaraki was so unstable made my heart freeze anyways
Question. How can everyone remembers what happened to Nina and Alexander and regard that as the most disturbing moment in FMA, but forget Envy's true form, and the time father tried to create humans. I guess the chimera thing happened so early on in the series that people were desensitized to what came next.
that was the only one on this list I HAD to skip. everything else on the list I've either seen already or they didn't bother me that much. but that poor kid at number 3. :(
I agree with you. The battle with Sabrina was really a surreal mindfuck. The little girl/doll, the ghost pokemons and everything. It was like a child version of Silent Hill, imo.
As soon as you was talking about Toonami I figured it was that DBZ scene I remember when I bought the VHS set and it was uncut, and being horrified as a kid but that was one of the things that made him an awesome villain
Yeah, Fruit Basket screwed us all. We knew there were abuses and that their was a reason for them to be so broken, but hell we did not expect that... Myiazaki just knows how to scare us in a blink of an eye. No face? The lord of the forest and the boars? The depression scene with Howls? Hahahahaha... in the blink of an eye, anything that was cute can turn creepy. For My hero Academia, well, I kind of had the intuision that the autor wanted to show the things getting worse and worse, so I wasn't that shocked. And I still like Stain and I whish he become an ally sometime. You know, If whished you had put the begining of chimera arc in HxH. Sure the show was a bit wierd and dark before, but in two or three episodes, the mood of the story switched to survival horror ... Oh yeah, Akira was so creepy and disturbing, especially the hallucinations scenes, and his lost of control was horrible. He killed the girl he liked. I so remember how Gaara scared me to shit the first time I saw it. OH hell I remember I did in my pants when Cell first appeared on the show. I so wish I never saw that.

What´s about the whole ending of End of Evangelion ? That was very disturbing, especially the Scene where Asuka gets eaten by the EVA series. But I agree with the rest. Happy Helloween🎃
i remember watching season 0. I mean it was based on the manga and it's gonna get dark but that scene from episode 1 wasn't in the manga at all so yeah I wasn't expecting that 1.
What was so horrible about that scene with Imperfect Cell? All I saw was some old, rich dude being teleported to another dimension. Like when Goku got that giant hole blown out his chest. He went to another dimension.
OOooohhhh bring it on! 10. Seeing how the original SMS season was my least fav out of the 5 arcs, I forgot about this scene since I only watched S all the way through once. Now if there was one Sailor Moon scene that freaked me out, it was actually in the 3rd season of Crystal with Mistress 9 trying to destroy Hotaru's body and those eyes ug! Yeah my fellow Moonie pals and I were all freaking out lol. 9. OMG yes, that was so freaky even with the foreshadowing part Hatori gives earlier in the season. 8. To be honest, I found Yubaba more freaky then No Face, especially when in a temper. 7. Omg, yeah I personally think the 2nd one is more scarier. 6. The girl getting squished had me closing my eyes. Heck I couldn't watch that part even now. 5. So glad Gara changed his tune, but in reality I found his 'death' in the next saga to be more horrifying. 4. Egad! Yeah that's trauma inducing. 3. *Gaps* Wait I've heard about that scene and this was a non-horror anime? 2. Boy that villain is like a combo of the Penguin and Joker. 1. Yeah I had no idea about this scene until years later. FREAKY!! For me the scariest moment in a non-horror anime happens within the movie, Barefoot Gen, and that's the atomic bomb scene. OMG for me nothing is scarier then reality and the idea that events that occur during that part, actually happened IRL is horrifying!
The friggin straw hat disappearances scarred me. Just the immediate removal of existence. Their inability to fight back. The vain attempts of still trying and desperately trying to hold onto one another. It was the full package of feels.
Listen, *LISTEN* My parents took me to the cinema to see Spirited Away when I was four, and I didn't make it past the first ten or so minutes. I just recently watched spirited away in theaters with one of my friends. Spirited Away is my favorite Studio Ghibli film and it was so nice to see it in theaters with one of my really good friends.
A couple of these were just "ahhhh I'll let em live"
And then
"SIKE YOU THOUGHT"
Daughter Rachel: Dang it! You Made Me Laugh a Little Hard! That Was Great!
I can’t get over the mall scene in MHA, it was amazing
Oh the villain arc blows that out of the water
He was going to hurt the precious bean Deku!
Oh read the “My Villain Academia” arc in the manga then.
Introduction of AFO anyone?
i cant get over the overhaul scene with blood.
Courage the Cowardly Dog is the scariest anime.
CHANGE MY MIND.
NOT SCIENTIFICALLY POSSIBLE!
Agree, some episodes scarred me for life. But here we're talking only about Japanese productions so...

I think I’m more concerned about how the cell scene didn’t phase me as a child than by the scene itself.
Same, I don't remember being that scared. Disturbed or disgusted, maybe, but...
The scene with Tomura is one of my favourites, just cause of the implications that the villain is becoming a better villain because of the hero
Cell: Human slurpies give me such a brainfreeze!
I won’t lie, that fate: zero one made me jump out of my chair...
The most horrifying scene to me in MHA was when the 5 who went to rescue Bakugo got scared shitless by All for one. Their faces shook me so much to see them so terrified.
curse you,No-Face! I was so traumatized when i first saw that scene!
oh yeah and that ancient magus bride scene too...
I was pretty young when I watched Spirited Away with my older sister(they introduced me to Studio Ghibli) and all I felt was "creeepyyyy!". I didn't know how to process stuff like sometimes scary and sometimes not so scary cartoons.
Interesting choices in BNHA scenes. I definitely almost crapped myself at AFO's entrance. Thought he straight up committed Jeanocide.
I hate you for that pun. Have the damn thumb up.
When I got to that part in the manga, I thought he straight up killed everyone!
Reads title : Wonder where Madoka Magica will be in the the top there
Watches and see it in horonable mentions : NANI????
See the top three and agrees.
Anthony McGuire probably because madoka magica is a horror anime
When I saw Shikigrikia I was like I know what scene it is in the mall with him and deku
How did you spell his name THIS wrong?
@@silverscreen842 I’m sorry for having a learning disorder
@@lazy_genuisvalt1607 Ah, carry on then.
@@silverscreen842 ok you too
Oh gosh...just wait until they reveal his past. That puts these scenes to shame.
12:12 that moment when even a murderer just gets shocked with how brutal someones being murdered
I really love how you are dressed up as raphtalia.
Same
I can't bring myself to rewatch the Mad Pierrot episode.
HxH 2011 with the Chimera Ants swooping up a village
PunkRock Loser90 and the Gon transformation. That was straight up scary
Good thing that when Viz Media acquired the Dubbing rights to Sailor Moon R and S as well as Sailor Moon in general all of the censored scenes you mentioned were uncensored and shown the way they were meant to be seen.

@@OnDavidsBrain Well I AM pretty disturbing! Remember that time when I drank that guy? THAT was f*cking weird.
You wanna see suck this guy
Wasn’t Imperfect Cell inspired by the Xenomorphs?
@@WarmLusamine One of Frieza's transformations was inspired by the Xenomorphs, his 3rd form shared way too many similarities to them for it to be coincidence.
A fun scary list for the fun scary time of the year ^^ Great job as always ^^
I was so scared of Cell when I saw him in the 2014 Dragon Ball Z Kai
The studio actually ordered him to be changed because he was TOO scary.
When I heard my hero academia I was thinking of the scene with overhaul
Same here
I was thinking of Moonfish eating a severed arm.
Yep, same, that scene from episode 65 where Magne died was just about as terrifying as I thought it would be and it's just going to get better :D
But I do agree with that mall scene being pretty scary though.
I knew they weren't going to kill Izuku, but the fact that Shigaraki was so unstable made my heart freeze anyways
i LOVE these lists, keeps introducing me to new animes. i can only imagine how awesome a top 10 Tournament Arc list would be ;)
the d reaper from digimon tamers, where it uses jerri's voice is so disconcerting/creepy
Question. How can everyone remembers what happened to Nina and Alexander and regard that as the most disturbing moment in FMA, but forget Envy's true form, and the time father tried to create humans. I guess the chimera thing happened so early on in the series that people were desensitized to what came next.
When we used to watch DBZ Kai on CW that Cell scene freaked my son out so bad we stopped watching for a while.
Honestly number three messed me up the most that was... that was just mortifying 😢😢😢
that was the only one on this list I HAD to skip. everything else on the list I've either seen already or they didn't bother me that much. but that poor kid at number 3. :(
Number 3 scared me so bad I literally cried, poor boy
"Hope this doesn't give you nightmare!" Robin says while signing. Hell the kids scene is enough for me to have them for the next year!!
"have a snickers, your not yourself..." LOL
Using non scary anime to give me nightmares for halloween. Irony is in the form of a great list.
2 scenes I didn't see on here that I would like to mention
1. Ash's battle with Sabrina from Pokemon
2 King Boom Boo possessing Amy Rose in Sonic X
I agree with you. The battle with Sabrina was really a surreal mindfuck. The little girl/doll, the ghost pokemons and everything. It was like a child version of Silent Hill, imo.
Fruits basket: Actually, Kyo turned in a giant rabbit demon. Look at him! That is not a cat!
Is it just me or does Kyo's demon form looked like that cockroach alien from Men in Black?
As soon as you was talking about Toonami I figured it was that DBZ scene I remember when I bought the VHS set and it was uncut, and being horrified as a kid but that was one of the things that made him an awesome villain
who else thought the stain speech was more epic than terrifying

Seriously Nagisa mother, that scene definitely freaked me out
Ikr the fact that she looks like a titan, adds a cherry on top.
I’m surprised the nuke scene from Barefoot Gen didn’t get added to the list or honorable mention.
Same here, but maybe they haven't seen it yet?
Same. That still haunts me to this day.
Heck Watchmojo had that scene as number one on their list.
that wasn't supposed to be scary, just horrific and dramatic.
jekblom123 Still scary though.
Wasnt there a girl eaten alive in this ark? I only heard of it and thought about this Anime after reading the Title.
@@Sunaki1000 , well, in HxH everytime there is a death, you think "they so didn't deserved this..." and yup, some ladies gets horrifying deaths...

I'm actually surprised the Sabrina Gym Battle episode didn't make the list. Her chilling attitude, the creepy doll, Misty and Brock getting turned into dolls, it was CRAZY
The lasagna scene from 91 Days and The End of Evangelion. Nuff said
*Number 1:* Lesson Zero (MLP)
*_Magic Of Friendship:_*_ I fear no man, but that thing... it scares me._
The scene from fruits basket is much worse in the remake.
@SoulReaper 85 They actually show him transforming, it's not just a puff of smoke and-oh GOD, it's slow and drawn out, we see it, we see everything grow, and change proportions, it looks torturous. He's making sounds of pain the entire time, and just thinking about that transformation scene makes me shudder
What´s about the whole ending of End of Evangelion ?
That was very disturbing, especially the Scene where Asuka gets eaten by the EVA series.
But I agree with the rest. Happy Helloween🎃
Tri4me you meant End of Evangelion.
I mean End of Evangelion. Sorry I fix this.
But Evangelion is meant to be a messed up anime so doesn't count
That anime is a psychological horror.
Same with Puella Magi.
While Psycho-Pass in itself is pretty dark, the pharmacy scene from season 2 really left a mark.
i remember watching season 0. I mean it was based on the manga and it's gonna get dark but that scene from episode 1 wasn't in the manga at all so yeah I wasn't expecting that 1.
To me the most terrifying was that boy from Fate Zero. The screams sold that scene
What was so horrible about that scene with Imperfect Cell? All I saw was some old, rich dude being teleported to another dimension. Like when Goku got that giant hole blown out his chest. He went to another dimension.
It was a horrifying sight but it was also a great one to show how terrifying of an enemy Cell was
OOooohhhh bring it on!
Barefoot Gen. STILL traumatized. Couldn't even do five minutes into Barefoot Gen 2. Just horrifying. Moreso because it's based on reality.
The funny thing is that, that's one of my favorite moments in DBZ. And I actually wished that thay'd show more of it.

Fun fact:
This scene was both the first time I ever saw Garra, and the moment I decided he was my favorite Naruto character.
I found Rem torturing Subaru more disturbing, especially considering how their interactions were before and after...
Robin: I have my face on a pillow, it’s the closest thing to a body pillow..for now.
Me: Fishy Boopkins and Lamar Williams would be proud.
Fun fact: No-Face's mask inspired the mask of Darth Nihilus from Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2 the Sith Lords.
I could have lived my life very happily without seeing ANY of these scenes. Thanks for the nightmare fuel. 😨
That No-Face CosPlay is amazing.
When Cory got locked in the cage with the bear is the scariest Anime scene ever.
Change my mind.
Some of those scenes were etched into my repressed memories when I first saw them. You only reminded me of them.
Even though it counts as a Horror series, episode 10 of Made in Abyss was really disturbing to watch
The friggin straw hat disappearances scarred me. Just the immediate removal of existence. Their inability to fight back. The vain attempts of still trying and desperately trying to hold onto one another. It was the full package of feels.
Listen, *LISTEN*
My parents took me to the cinema to see Spirited Away when I was four, and I didn't make it past the first ten or so minutes. I literally *screamed* my head off when I saw the mum and dad were turned into pigs. It was so bad my parents had to take me and my brother home.
Then, years later, I caught a bit of the Noface part and noped out again.
I only watched the film all the way through this year, at the age of *23* and let me tell you, I was shaking beforehand.
"So Piccolo what brings you to my neighborhood"
