This is really good stuff, my rule of thumb for safe yak fishing in NZ is wind under 7kts and swell .3m, I've been out in 25kts with 1.5m swells, but it's no fun to fish in those conditions, I now choose my battles carefully and don't go out if the average wind speed forecast is over 7kts.
Great notes and I agree completely. Can never be too careful on a yak. I fish on my own a lot and these things are really important.
Another great video. I know wind direction where I live is important. If its North or North East stay home. However if I go to St Georges Basin which is a large body of water forget any wind over 5 knots the waves get too high. In the end you have to know your own area by trial and hopefully not error.

Nice I have a kyack but yet to paddle and fish in the bay yet ! I have seen a few yakers tip while fishing around the bay :O
Yeah ive actually rescued about 10 kayakers in my time who have tipped. Either they bought kayaks that were not very stable or they were in bad weather. It can get pretty scary out there when you tip.
I also know a very simple wind forecast application - Cyclono

Very helpful vid Alan! i have never taken my kayak out to the ocean for the sole reason that i never really knew how to read wind and waves haha. ive owned a kayak for about 3/4 months now, and now with the current stage 4 lockdown, ive only been able to head out like 4 times and only in nearby lakes. Looking forward to heading out once the lockdown is over. i think i still need some equipments for my yak though...

@@fishingmad im still yet to buy myself an esky/crate for storage, fish finder, some rod straps and anchor system haha. I basically only have an empty kayak and a life jacket. A bit worried about going out to sea by myself, so ive been practising in lakes so i get used to the stability of my kayak, tempted to even build me outriggers for the ocean just for extra stability.
Its great that you taking it cautiously. Buying the accessories can be a fun process. If your Melb based your always welcome to join us when we can go out next. That way your with others to build up your confidence.

i am loseing my mind in this lockdown NO FISHING FOR 6 WEEKS😭
I agree 100% only been a week, but already feels like a lifetime. At the rate things are going they prob wont let us fish after 6 weeks anyways.
Far out that's a scary maiden voyage... Kayaking can turn deadly very quickly on open water, and we lose people almost every year on port phillip bay, mostly due to inexperience.
To add to your comments, would recommend everyone has either a marine radio or PLB. If you flip and cant reboard, you need to be able to call for help.
Lightning is also very dangerous, because it can arrive quicker than you can paddle to shore. I use an app called Lightning Pro, and have the alarm set to notify of strikes within a set diameter.
You might consider doing a quick vid on boat ramp etiquette for kayakers. Stage 3 restrictions imply you need to launch from the closest point possible. For me this means the dreaded boat ramp, and apparently there's unwritten rules that other kayakers may not be aware of.

Excellent points you have raised there. When i started I didn't have any help and i was mainly kayak fishing on my own. I got caught out in a storm and lightning and it was really scary. I've never paddled back into shore so quick in my life. I wrote an article last week about the benefits of EPIRBs and PLBs. I'm planning to do another video soon to do a deeper dive on tools such as these that can save your life. I really appreciate the suggestion and the comment. Some very good and valid points that I will take on board.

Are we still allowed to go kayak fishing in stage 3? Does the launch point have to be within a certain distance?

"You should use the parks and public spaces which are closest to your home. This includes walking, hiking, bike riding, surfing, kayaking or yoga in the park."
"recreational activities should be undertaken at the closest available locations to your home."

Note: This does not currently apply to those in Stage 4 Melbourne, but I'm banking as things improve the same logic will be applied.
