Why is the dark side inherently evil? It’s a lot like a drug. As Yoda has stated, it offers quick results but often leads to unforeseen consequences. You become sloppy and angrier. You come to depend on the dark side. “Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny”. It’s the very definition of imbalance within yourself.
@@Xehanort10 So, no spoilers for anyone else, but you are correct it should never be just black and white, and I think they kind of brought this out with certain bald Jedi Master, who walked on the very fine line, and had a unusual colored lighsaber.....
I like the wider framing if the Dark/Light dichotomy as being oriented around power. The reason most Sith are evil is because of their desire for power ('There is no peace, there is passion; through passion, I gain strength; through strength, I gain power; through power, I gain victory; through victory, my chains are broken'). The lust for power that is inherent to the Dark Side is what ends up making most Sith focus on anger, fear, etc as the fuel for their force power, as they are, as Yoda points out, the 'easy path'. There have been Dark Side users who have used love, for example, as the source of their passion and power. It is ultimately framed as one of the deep ironies of the Sith, though. They desire nothing more than the power to break the chains which bind them... but the ultimate chains - mortality - can only be broken through the peace and serenity of the light side... which takes more work and, ironically, more power through self discipline for you to achieve SPOILERS FOR 7,8, 9, AND THE LEGENDS CONTINUITY: The obvious caveat being the ways that Palpatine cheats death repeatedly via cloning. But note the difference: the means by which a Dark Side user escaped death were artificial, but the ways in which Jedi have escaped death have been virtue if their Light Side alignment and the power of the Force itself
I never thought about your observation that many kids want to change their parents. That made me cry after 40 years of seeing this movie. What an astounding revelation.
Humans always want to change others, cause of ego. Everything believes they know what's right which only breeds conflict. When the truth is, nobody knows what's right as right and wrong don't exist.
Many kids want to change their parents, the thing is that parents have many years of earned wisdom and knowledge compared to ignorant children. Parents should not change their ways based on what children think it’s right and wrong.
@@thereisnopandemic way to completely misinterpret what someone said. They are obviously talking about abusive parents who behaved in uncool hurtful ways. The children in question wish that their parents had been more ideal and had not hurt them in the ways that they did. Case in point, Vader. Luke wishes he were a good guy, that he had not fallen to the dark side, and wants to get him to see that he can still be good. Idealized. Vader's fear and anger and hate and falling to the dark side because of attachment... are not earned wisdom in any sense. they are poor choices born out of attachment and immaturity and greed, as Yoda himself said "attachment leads to jealousy, the shadow of greed, that is." This person isn't talking about immature infants who want mommy and daddy to give them more ice cream, it's about children of people who were dysfunctional and abusive that the children wish they could only see the light and that they COULD have made more informed less poor choices, particularly if the child themself can make them themselves. My mother is sometimes very afraid, of ordinary things. her fear taught me as a child that I should be afraid of these same things too. later in life, I discovered that she was wrong, that her fear was anything but rational. I did the things that scare her, (such as "asking for help when I need it," which scares her.) I DO wish I could "change" her by getting her to realize that she is good enough to ask for help and that no one will attack or hurt her (her fear) if she asks for help. I cannot change her and it's disappointing. You can't blame me or anyone else similar for wanting other people to be happy if they could just stop stopping themselves from it or having the largely irrational hangups that they have. She even said "there are so many kids who want to change their parents FOR THE BETTER."
I saw this in theaters when I was 11 years old. When the Emperor was electrocuting Luke and Vader was just standing there trying to decide what to do there were grown men in the audience standing up and SCREAMING at the screen for him to HELP HIM! HELP YOUR SON! And when he did and Vader dropped him off the edge everyone went absolutely insane. People were crying. The only thing I've ever seen that comes close to that feeling was when Captain America picks up Thor's Hammer.
@@SmilingLawnmower-xf8suHaha, I’m Australian as well although I’m only 14. Despite my age, I have been to the cinema plenty of times and I thought the “cinema etiquette” over here was common across most other countries but I guess not! 😅
One of the best lines of dialogue made by Lucas in the entire series: "It is too late for me, my son." That one sentence, for the first time, reveals a Vader who's vulnerable, who is showing regrets, who wants to be redeemed, but his guilt and self-hatred are still too powerful to overcome. It takes an act of self-sacrifice by Luke to show his father the way back, but that moment, I feel, is the actual turning point in the film on Anakin's redemption.
"I won't leave you here, I've got to save you." "You already...have, Luke". So much is said in those two lines; and they hit all the harder with your observation that so many kids want their parents to change for the better in real life ❤❤
Well Darth Vader enjoyed killing the high ranking officers of the Empire for almost no reason at all, so obviously his dream had to be killing the highest of them all, the Emperor, so his collection would be more complete. 😉 He just used his son as a diversion... and that's why he says "NO! NO!".... meaning "NO! NO! I'm not losing this perfect occasion!!!"🤣🤣🤣
@@lewisfromspain2915 my favorite bit is, Vader doesn't kill any officers on screen after Luke took a dive in cloud city. Luke would rather die than join the monster his father had become... and that changed him.
The main thing (IMO) to know about the force comes from the first film. When Luke asks Ben "It controls your actions?" and Ben says "Partially, but it also obeys your commands." Once you go down the dark path, it can be controlling. "The power of the dark side" is just as much about the compulsion as it is the strength.
So Vader's suit is essentially an iron lung keeping him alive. It breathes for him. He is only about 30% human at this point, he suffered horrific injuries I will not spoil here. It also had a built in vulnerability to force lightning that the Emperor casts. Hence why he died after killing the emperor, he got zapped and it destroyed his suits cybernetics. Please watch the prequels Meg. The sequels can be ignored though =P
I'm super excited for your reactions to the prequel trilogy, because a lot of your questions and problems with the Jedi are very evident and a focal point of that trilogy. Can't wait for more.
It was better the original, and it made more sense to show Vader with his real age. And it was a lack of respect for the original actor and the original trilogy. If you want to see Anakin you already have the shitty movies that they did after.
@@MandatoryFruit He looked like the Anakin that had just died in the Hangar. I prefer Shaw. Only after they've begun to use Hayden in the series that it makes more sense.
When you talked about the importance of Vader acknowledging that Luke was right because many want to change their parents for better but can't..it really gave me a new perspective even though i have seen this movie a billion times but this was not something i thought about before. This is why i love your reactions and i can't wait gor you to watch the prequels and hear your thoughts ❤
Jedi is plural. Pass on what you have learned. Think deeper. Anakin was the Chosen One. He was redeemed in the Force and Luke. Had he lived. He would have been prosecuted.
Jedi is singular and plural. Makes the title so perfect. Return of the Jedi, as in Luke is bouncing back, better than ever. Return of the Jedi Order, Luke will rebuild, the Sith are defeating. Return of the Jedi Anakin, Vader is vanquished, Anakin comes back to the light. Title works on so many levels.
@@jasonkiefer1894 George Lucas explains in interview promoting the special editions that the story of the saga is about Anakin, and in addition goes on to explain his return & redemption at the end of episode VI return of the Jedi, even according to the official Starwars site biography of Luke Skywalker, the film "Return of the Jedi" ends with the return of Anakin Skywalker. It follows that the 'Jedi' mentioned in the title is Anakin
Somehow out of the hundred times I've seen this movie I never put 2 and 2 together that 3PO's "I have decided that we shall stay here" was him impersonating the deity again that's actually hilarious
I always considered the line to be funny because it represented C3PO attempting to assert his own autonomy and dignity in the face of always being insulted and bossed around by Han Solo.
I always understood the line to be funny because it represented an attempt by C3PO to assert his own autonomy and dignity in the face of Han Solo always insulting him and bossing him around.
I always interpret the Jedi like monks with too much power. In order to use that power for good, they have to remove themselves from anything that could turn them evil: Attachments and negative emotions. It's not a choice to be "emotionless' it's a necessity in order to serve the greater good.
The problem is these particular monks don’t shut themselves off from the galaxy (like on Earth), they have to interact with it? And you can’t truly interact with various people and feel no feelings of attachment to them whatsoever so ever. Also being far too detached from others means that they also became out of touch with galaxy, that they didn’t adapt to the times.
Firstly, what a wholesome, sweet reaction to the ending. I always cry at the end too lol. 2. Until the Emperor told him, Vader didn't even know his children existed. If you rewatch the scene in Ep. V, the Emperor says something to the effect of 'he is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker'. Then Vader asks how is this possible? (I can't remember the exact quotes, so don't at me, lol) So, you're ascribing a lot of loving parental emotions to Vader based on a false impression. Not to say that Vader didn't care for Luke, because obviously he did.
Also that whole conversation between the Emperor and Vader in Episode V was changed in the special editions. It was much less obvious before Lucas made all his awful changes.
@@acdchook Why is it awful to tie things together better? This happens in revisions all the time. Let an artist change their work as they see fit. It's not up to you. The new Emperor scene is MUCH better than the original.
Actually, Vader knew before the Emperor told him. Even before it was confirmed in the Marvel comics that take place between ANH and ESB, the dialogue in the earlier part of ESB shows Vader knows about "Skywalker" and he's obsessed with finding him. We learn in the comics that he found out the Rebel who destroyed the Death Star was named Luke Skywalker. He learns from Boba Fett.
even in the original comics from 1980 Vader found out it was Luke before Empire. He pretends not to know when confronted by the Emperor. But it's when Luke lets himself fall from Cloud City that Vader feels the light again. He's inspired that his son has the courage to stand against the dark side in a way that he didn't have the strength to. And on Endor Luke feels the conflict building within him until ultimately the light prevails. That's the point, as Darth Vader, Anakin is in total darkness and all it takes is the smallest spark of (a new) hope from Luke to bring the light that saves him.
When Vader asks the Emperor, "How is that possible?" (regarding the fact that Anakin has a surviving child), Vader is intentionally playing dumb. Vader had already learned about Luke's existence during events that occurred between Episodes IV and V (see, for example, the first Darth Vader comic book series published circa 2015). He intentionally kept this knowledge to himself. The Emperor, who has spies everywhere, learned about Luke without Vader having ever told him. If you listen carefully to the Emperor's intonation during his dialogue in Episode V when he and Vader are communicating via hologram, you can read between the lines and realize that the Emperor is essentially saying, "Cut the crap, Vader - - you already know what I am talking about here regarding Luke being Anakin's surviving child."
Somebody smarter than me, noticed that usually the hero wins. But in THIS saga, the good guy HAS TO LOSE to force a choice onto the villain: be good or be bad. We are defined by our actions, not our intentions.
I loved this reaction! I'm so happy you finished the Original Trilogy, and I'm excited for your reactions to the Prequel Trilogy. I would be a liar if I didn't say that I cried alongside you by the end. I hope you're feeling better 😂
HOLY SHIT, I've never thought of that! Anakin's last move on Mustafar, the failed frontflip as the parallel to Luke's backflip away from aggression. Now, here it isn't the deciding moment, but it's still such an elegant way to show the core difference between them.
You have such a tender, loving heart. You really care for your fellow people, and you invested so much into this. Your reaction here really touched my heart. And I wept with you. What a wonderful reaction! ❤
1:32 lol! Real-world reason: George Lucas wanted to give Luke a lightsaber color that stood out better against the blue skies of Tatooine. Canonical reason: Luke used a different colored kyber crystal than the one used in his father’s lightsaber. Personally, I prefer the green lightsaber over the blue one 😅
That's not the canonical reason anymore. That's Legends. The canonical reason is that Luke's personal connection to the Force at the point he built the saber and connected with the crystal dictated the color.
I prefer EU canon to Disney canon, but there is a fan theory about this that I prefer. Luke used notes and schematics from Obi-wan’s hut to build his lightsaber, which is why it’s similar design, and he found an old crystal there and used it. The same crystal from Qui-Gon Jin’s saber that Obi-wan kept.
Whenever Caleb comes into the stream during these Star Wars reactions I really appreciate the HARD WORK he's doing NOT saying/spoiling all the things that the other movies go into detail about!
Wow. Hey, I don't know what your situation was, but you've hinted at things. I'm sorry for what you must have gone through to react to this the way you did with the parental aspect. I just wanted to say I really love the emotional intelligence you share with us here. It's clear you had to work on a lot of things to get here....Lot of people would become bitter through that kind of childhood but you've gone in the other direction and it's just beautiful to see. Thank you for taking us on this journey with you :)
As someone who's been a fan of this series for decades, your point about the successful/unsuccesful flip has absolutely blown my mind. Without spoiling anything, you can't even imagine just how utterly right you are about that one. Lucas is a genius. The prequel reactions really can't come soon enough!
I love that you continue to see the doubt and goodness in Vader. David Prowse did an amazing job of conveying it even behind a mask. Vader was holding back the whole time! And yes, the final harp playing the imperial march as a swan song to Anakin is so beautiful
Call it what you will, redemption arc, face turn--In this trilogy, we met Vader as a broken man stomping through the galaxy wracked with pain like a dog that's been kicked for decades. And, after a road of trials, Anakin comes back... 😭
In the first 2 movies, Luke's lightsaber that use to be his father's, the handle looks much like the handle of Vader's lightsaber. In this movie, the handle of Luke's new lightsaber resembles the handle of Obi Wan's lightsaber.
I really appreciated your insight on the father-son relationship and how we wish we could change our parents 🙏 Also, if you thought this was a tearjerker….holyyyyy shit, prepare yourself for Revenge of The Sith 😱😬
9:45 George Lucas did say that Ewoks vs Empire was his Representation of the Vietnam War basically Ewoks (Vietcong) being severly underestimated by the Empire(USA) and ending up winning their fight
Yeah, it’s far more U.S vs Vietcong influenced than Nazi influenced. They took very obvious cues from fascist uniforms that are akin to the Nazis of course. But the politics reflect the period.
Light Saber color meanings. Blue - loyalty, stability, truth, justice. Green - growth, safety, harmony. Red - power, anger, hatred. Purple - nobility and wisdom.
I think you'll like the prequels--some people hate them, but I think they do a good job explaining Anakin's backstory, where the emperor comes from & what made the republic bedome the Empire. I'll wait for the notifications. Have a nice day.
Your insights and takes are so interesting, I've been watching star wars for nearly 30 years, and you had such amazing insight into the characters motivations. Thank you.
Meg, your emotions are not unreasonable. This trilogy is why Star Wars fans are the most passionate (sometimes problematically) fans in the world. These stories just carry so much weight, and emotion than most other franchises/stories in the entire world. I'm excited to see what you think of the prequels, all your questions will be answered ❤
Why is Luke's lightsaber green? - As Caleb said you will learn about lightsabers, how the Jedis use it (honestly not THAT complicated) - I think you can get more answeres to these questiuons in the tv shows like Clone Wars or Rebels, for ex.: How/when do the younglings construct teir first lightsaber, or learn more about Boba Fett, or how the Force works throughout the galaxy, more about the different species in the galaxy - The 6 movies are mostly about the story of the Skywalker family. The prequles tell you why, the when and the how, like - why did Anakin turn, how did the Jedis lose, or why did they hide Luke and Leia.
According to George Lucas the blue lightsaber was less noticeable in the blue skies of many scenes, so it was made green for that reason. The mythology of light saber colors was explained later as Victorszakas lets us know above.
Why is it green? Because it is not every other color, therefore, it can only be green. Why is it green? Because blue is the opposer of red, and the color of the Jedi Guardians. The color of the duelist. Green is the Jedi Counselors, more prone to negotiation than confrontation. The color switch is Luke going from being ready to fight Vader to trying to talk to Vader and bring him around. Why is it green? Green was prettier in the brightly lit desert scenes.
Well the reason its green is because in the lore of star wars its the kyber Crystal in the hilt and how intuned with the force they are. like the blue sabers or those who are more combat focused while green like lukes are those more intuned with the force and less combat.
And also because it would have been harder to see the blue blade since it would have been the same color as the sky during the fight on jabba's sail barge
You're already tapping into why the version of the Jedi Order led by Yoda and Obi-Wan is seen as flawed in many ways, and why it was prone to fall. By this point, the Jedi had become far too sure of themselves and set in their dogmatic view that any form of emotional attachments were bad. You're right -- it was Luke's defiance of their instruction to just ingore his feelings and kill his dad that led to the outcome that ended up saving everything.
::spoiler alert:: I liked the funeral pyre as I considered it essentially the ascension of Anakin's soul and the final destruction of Darth Vader as Anakin leaves it behind. And looking back on this film after seeing the prequels, it is a nice touch in retrospect that Anakin died saving his family.
I've grown up with these movies and love them and watched them so many times but your viewpoints on it helped me discover new aspects of it I never considered before! You're SO right that using the world "feelings" is so radical in this, especially with a son talking with his father. And you're SO right that the focus on the parent-child relationship is so important here, otherwise it'd just be a war movie about blowing up a space station but the REAL story turned on Luke trying to get his father to change for the better. Thank you so much for reacting to these movies and letting us be a part of that journey!
The first movie came out when I was ten or eleven, and over the decades I began to suspect that the impact they made on me was due to my own age. It's good to see that they pack a punch for a new generation.
Ya know I’ve been watching these movies ever since I can remember, and I have never felt the impact and breadth of emotion of this ending, until I saw it through your eyes. So thank you for that. I imagine your reaction is the one that George Lucas intended for this movie to produce.
I first saw Star Wars in the theater in 1979 (I think). I was around 5-6 years old. It was the first movie theater experience I ever had, and it ended up affecting me profoundly and permanently. I loved The Empire Strikes Back and I remember as a 10-year-old lining up with my family to see Return of the Jedi on opening night - the first movie that my family and I ever did this for. My brother and I collected action figures - which I continued to do as an adult - and I read nearly all of the EU books (the ones for adults anyway). I've seen every Star Wars movie in the theater - most of them more than once - and every episode of Clone Wars, live-action Star Wars, and a lot of Rebels. I've also seen many people react to these movies on TH-cam, because I love sharing the experience of someone seeing them for the first time... All of that being said, I really enjoyed watching your reactions to the Original Trilogy (OT), and in particular, your connection with Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader despite knowing the full history of the character. In many ways it's impossible to go into these movies completely unaware of the "I am your father" line or that there are movies that tell the back story of Anakin or even scenes from different memes, so I was interested to see you discovering parts of the story that it's really hard for an adult in today's world not to have some knowledge about even if they've never seen the movies. I look forward to your continued journey. One thing I will add. While I certainly have my favorites among the OT as well and some Star Wars movies and show that I DON'T particularly enjoy, I would give you a word of warning: Don't let internet fanboys rob you of the pleasure of watching a Star Wars movie. There are definitely some that are better than others and there are some that I personally wish were done differently, but the reality is that how you view these movies has a lot to do with when you first saw them, which ones were your introduction, and how jaded you are. There are good scenes and moments in all of them (and some cringey ones too), but by and large they are a good time, and the worst one of them is still pretty fun. None of them are profound cinema (except maybe the first one, for its time), but they all have some great special effects, cool aliens, and big action set pieces.
The part where you said Luke changed his father and how special that was - really hit home. My sons have helped me change for the better and I’ve told them when I’m wrong/they were right. And they both tell me how much that means to them ❤
Your reactions to this trilogy have been wonderful. I even teared up a bit myself in sympathy. 40 years (a few years more for the other two) and these movies still have their magic.
If you’re curious about why Luke’s new lightsaber is green, it’s because the kyber crystal that powers the blade chooses the Jedi. Not the other way around.
Meg really nailed the redemption arc, and added a fascinating perspective on parenting that I hadn't heard before, that was sad but also really insightful and true for many millions of kids. I'm really glad I watched all these videos. Great understanding, and great perception, Meg. Can't wait to watch the rest.
George Lucas didn't have the best closest relationship with his super hardcore conservative father. Not hard at all to see him tap into that for this story.
I didn't know that. That explains quite a lot actually. He seems to have issues with authority, look what you said about Disney. He called them white slavers! I think he's always put the money up for his films himself no? After his success with Star Wars. With mixed results obviously. @@MeanMrMustard1
I used to be Darth Vader.....I was not a good person and I missed about 11 years of my kids life. But I did come back into their lives (10 years ago). I still carry that pain, but at least I am here for them and I always will. My father died when I was 8, so he never had a chance to be in my life, and my mom always put other before me, and was never there for me (she died of cancer in 2019, and never apologized). So the final scene when Vader saves Luke and when he looks at him with his own eyes, and when you see the good Anakin it really gets to me in the heart on a personal level. All those parents out there....its NEVER too late!!!!
I think Obi Wan and Yoda didn't have that connection to Vader as Luke had, so they couldn't see that there was still hope for him. To them he was lost to the dark side.
I think obi wan absolutely had that connection to anakin but I think because he'd seen what anakin did when he fell to the darkside and what he'd become after their final battle he just didnt want to listen to those feelings.
@@justarandomveryintelligent8934 It's the classic conflict between the weariness of the old, who have seen too many bad times and want to prepare the young for disappointment, and the idealism of the young, who want to show the old that they're right to be idealistic.
All of the subtle interaction between Anakin/Vader and Luke was gold. And Luke was proven right about Anakin. Not the Emperor, not Yoda, not Obi-Wan...
Boy, if you are crying now then I believe we are in for a ride. You are gonna learn that there is only one individual who can help you to know the subtleties of the Force. And that's my favourite character in Star Wars.
When the director asked how Anakin could be a Jedi again when he had committed all those horrible thing, Lucas looked at him and asked "is that not what you're religion is all about?" the Director paused. thought a moment and said "I get it now" Lucas nodded and said, it's important for kids to know it's never too late to change your course"
IMO, when Vader said in Empire Strikes Back that he wanted Luke to help him overthrow the Emperor, he was probably just being manipulative. That's what Sith do.
No, it's in every Sith's nature to try to overthrow their master, take a new apprentice, and then their apprentice will try to do the same thing. The cycle continues. It's basically survival of the fittest. The Emperor wants to do the same thing. He never intended Luke to join the dark side as a third Sith Lord. He wanted to get rid of Vader and replace him with a new, stronger apprentice. The reason Vader doesn't immediately ask Luke to team up with him here is because Luke had already rejected his offer to join him, and Vader can sense that Luke has become a powerful Jedi (the Sith's mortal enemies). Vader expects him to kill the Emperor and Vader (which is what a typical Jedi would try to do, and what Yoda and Kenobi were training Luke for). Vader's loyalty and fear of the Emperor is still very strong.
_"I don't understand what Obi-Wan and Yoda wanted"_ You're not far off with your preceding analysis. But basically they wanted to use Luke as an emotionless weapon, in order to preserve freedom and love for the rest of the galaxy. It was not, you might say, a very light-side way to go about things, but at that point, they believed it was all they had. They may have been on the right side of things, spiritually and politically, but they were still highly flawed creatures.
People keep missing this. Count Dooku cut off one of Anakin's arms. In ROTS, Obi Wan cut off his other arm and both his legs when Anakin tried that jump at the end of their fight.
The original idea was to have the final battle take place on the Wookie homeworld of Kashyyyk, but since Chewie is shown to be tech-savvy Lucas came up with the Ewoks for the primitive vs. advanced technology battle. Lightsaber colors are based on their focusing crystals which are tied to the user's stance in the Force. The Dark Side corrupts you. So while the Emperor is canonically only in his 60s he looks like a dehydrated corpse because of his use of the Dark Side. The most controversial edit: having Vader say "No" before turning on the Emperor. The original ending was just the Rebels celebration on Endor. For the 1997 Special Edition they changed the song and added shots of Tatooine, Cloud City, and the galactic capital planet Coruscant. The planet Naboo was added in the 2004 Special Edition because of its importance in the Prequels. Anakin's Force Ghost represents him before he fell to the Dark Side.
In my opinion the only thing that would have Vader’s death scene even better is I Lucas added a line like “ Luke, I wish you could have known your mother. So strong, so caring, so beautiful. I loved her.” Something like that showing after all that time that Luke’s mom was still in his heart.
The BEST reaction to this movie I've ever seen. You get it. I have the same reaction to the same parts and noone understands why an adult man like me could cry about this. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being and showing your authentic reaction.
Not spoiling any future videos so I won't go into details, but all of the additional star wars material (other movies, clone wars tv show etc) have made the final showdown with Luke and Vader so much more emotionally affecting for me. Skywalkers been through it.
Qui Gon Gin was Anakin's teacher before Obi Wan. Qui Gon was like a father. Obi wan was like a brother. I feel Qui Gon would have been able to keep Anakin on the Light side. When Qui Gon Passed, Palpatine became like a father figure and used Anakin's love for his wife by telling him he could save her.
Nice seeing you enjoying Star wars Meg😊, but if you think the death of vader and his return to who he was emotional wait till you get to the prequel stuff the clone war tv mostly are more emotional but some parts of the prequel movies are emotional too.
I've learned a lot watching your videos, not only about the films themselves but what STAR WARS meant to all of us who saw it in the theater time and again when it first came out. I believe that the series is the pinnacle of film making. You are so insightful and emotional, and your reaction to the unmasking of Annakin makes me think that this scene would elicit the same emotions from the Greeks or Elizabethans as their most cherished performances.
So a little thing about the lightsaber colors and why Luke’s new saber is green: Blue traditionally signifies a Jedi’s skill or proficiency in saber combat. Green sabers usually signify a proficiency in the Force and are used by many Jedi Masters. In this film, the green saber shows Luke’s growth from a farmboy to a fully fledged Jedi Knight/Master. 😊💚
I saw the very first show in May 1983 of Return of the Jedi and to say the least, it was an experience I will never forget the rest of my life. The part near the end when the Emperor in his rage was slowly killing Luke with the force lightning was so terrifying and how the camera kept panning back and forth between Luke, Vader and the Emperor literally had people yelling and gasping in horror. Then at the instant Vader grabbed the Emperor and threw him into the core shaft the packed theater went absolutely crazy with shouts of joy and applause and cheers. I am so grateful to have been a part of that generation privileged to have seen this gretat film!!
The prequels get a bit of stick, but they will make things clearer about how Anakin was turned & how Luke was able to turn him back - can't wait to see you watch them! I too was emotional at the end when we saw Anakins redemption & brief bond with his son in his dying moments - but was also somewhat torn about it all: it may have been (mostly) under the evil manipulation of the Emperor, but let's not forget - as Vader, Anakin has done some pretty terrible things!!
Originally Leigh was not Luke's sister. His sister was supposed to be someone we never meet in the original trilogy. She was to be introduced in the sequels. Luke was supposed to receive news that she had been discovered by the Sith and turned to the dark side. The sequels would be about Luke trying to rescue his sister from the dark side. But George Lucas had such a difficult and frustrating time during the preproduction of ROTJ that he decided he wanted to be done with the entire franchise, so he changed the story to make Leigh the sister instead.
Vader going "no...nooo!" was not in the original movie, it was added later and kinda ruined a perfect moment. Vader looking between Luke and the Emperor, we never knew is internal thought, Anakin turns and fucks the Emperors day up... it was so much better.
She clearly loved the decisiveness and agency behind the line, to a point where she even repeated it to her partner afterwards. See, that's the thing with you OT-purists: No one else shares your nostalgic obsessions. No one else sees these movies as "ruined." It's literally just you.
In the older non CGI version there's a scene at the end where you briefly see storm trooper helmets alongside human skulls at the Ewok camp while they're celebrating. Those cute mofos eat people!
💜💜 Meg, great reaction! The prequels are absolutely amazing movies, trust me! Buy more tissues, you'll need them! Star Wars 1-6 is actually the breathtaking tragedy of Anakin Skywalker! An amazing story of love and suffering!
I've been a huge fan of SW for years, into the extended universe books, etc. and I think the best way to describe the movies is truly the story of a dysfunctional family
The in-Canon reason as to why Luke’s saber is green is (particularly) because its focusing crystal is synthetic. Before Disney mucked up the lore, the scene where Luke built his new saber was included in the novel _Shadows of the Empire._ In the true lore, the Sith (the group of Force-users to whom Vader and the Emperor belong) forged synthetic crystals, as natural red crystals tend to be unstable. Not having access to natural crystals, Luke discovered the method for forging a crystal and set to work. But whereas the Sith poured all their anger and hatred into their crystals, Luke poured his goodness and understanding and will to find alternative solutions into his crystal. These are the attributes of Jedi Consular; warrior sages whose traditional saber color is green. This is also a cue that Luke is more willing to seek other solutions than straightforward violence to defeat Vader and the Emperor.
@@Xehanort10 You would certainly like Kyle Katarn's take in Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy. Also, those are some of the best Star Wars games ever made.
@@Xehanort10 So, no spoilers for anyone else, but you are correct it should never be just black and white, and I think they kind of brought this out with certain bald Jedi Master, who walked on the very fine line, and had a unusual colored lighsaber.....
This is why I don’t like it when other characters in games or what not use the dark side but face no consequences (ahem jedi survivor)
It’s more the sith that are evil, not the dark side itself.
The sith abuse and twist the force for their own selfish desires and power.
They desire nothing more than the power to break the chains which bind them... but the ultimate chains - mortality - can only be broken through the peace and serenity of the light side... which takes more work and, ironically, more power through self discipline for you to achieve
SPOILERS FOR 7,8, 9, AND THE LEGENDS CONTINUITY:
The obvious caveat being the ways that Palpatine cheats death repeatedly via cloning.
Idealized.
Vader's fear and anger and hate and falling to the dark side because of attachment... are not earned wisdom in any sense. they are poor choices born out of attachment and immaturity and greed, as Yoda himself said "attachment leads to jealousy, the shadow of greed, that is."
This person isn't talking about immature infants who want mommy and daddy to give them more ice cream, it's about children of people who were dysfunctional and abusive that the children wish they could only see the light and that they COULD have made more informed less poor choices, particularly if the child themself can make them themselves.
You said it.
@@mariebourgot4949 I mean, look at this person's username, they're probably one of those "children are the property of their parents" types.

You can’t see through his mask, but that slow walk to the railing, the deeper and longer breath, tells you exactly what he’s feeling.
"I won't leave you here, I've got to save you."
"You already...have, Luke".
So much is said in those two lines; and they hit all the harder with your observation that so many kids want their parents to change for the better in real life ❤❤
This was my favorite of the original trilogy. Anakin's redemption and Luke's faith in his father is very heartwarming.
NO! I'm not losing this perfect occasion!!!"🤣🤣🤣
real chads stan episode 6
@@lewisfromspain2915 my favorite bit is, Vader doesn't kill any officers on screen after Luke took a dive in cloud city. Luke would rather die than join the monster his father had become... and that changed him.
same here.
Really? When it comes to the actual film making, this is easily the worst of the three.
I still get teary-eyed when Vader tells Luke, "You were right... you were right about me." 😭
The main thing (IMO) to know about the force comes from the first film. When Luke asks Ben "It controls your actions?" and Ben says "Partially, but it also obeys your commands." Once you go down the dark path, it can be controlling. "The power of the dark side" is just as much about the compulsion as it is the strength.
It seems dark side Force-users call it "the power of the dark side," while the Jedi say "seduced by the dark side."

That part where we see Anakin with Obi-Wan and Yoda looking back at Luke will always make me cry.
It was better the original, and it made more sense to show Vader with his real age. And it was a lack of respect for the original actor and the original trilogy. If you want to see Anakin you already have the shitty movies that they did after.

fun fact, the title of this episode refers to the return and redemption of a Jedi long thought dead … Anakin Skywalker - Return of the Jedi.

George Lucas explains in interview promoting the special editions that the story of the saga is about Anakin, and in addition goes on to explain his return & redemption at the end of episode VI return of the Jedi, even according to the official Starwars site biography of Luke Skywalker, the film "Return of the Jedi" ends with the return of Anakin Skywalker.
It follows that the 'Jedi' mentioned in the title is Anakin
Vader is like ‘son shut up before he tells me off again’ 😂
Pls. So true 🤣🤣🤣
Somehow out of the hundred times I've seen this movie I never put 2 and 2 together that 3PO's "I have decided that we shall stay here" was him impersonating the deity again that's actually hilarious
Who does 3PO think he is, HAL 9000?
This is a great interpretation.
exactly! glad to see someone else who agrees!

@@Progger11 Lucas>Disney Always
Agreed, and I think green is a better color to clash with red
I prefer EU canon to Disney canon, but there is a fan theory about this that I prefer. Luke used notes and schematics from Obi-wan’s hut to build his lightsaber, which is why it’s similar design, and he found an old crystal there and used it. The same crystal from Qui-Gon Jin’s saber that Obi-wan kept.
Whenever Caleb comes into the stream during these Star Wars reactions I really appreciate the HARD WORK he's doing NOT saying/spoiling all the things that the other movies go into detail about!

- As Caleb said you will learn about lightsabers, how the Jedis use it (honestly not THAT complicated)
- I think you can get more answeres to these questiuons in the tv shows like Clone Wars or Rebels,
for ex.: How/when do the younglings construct teir first lightsaber, or learn more about Boba Fett, or how the Force works throughout the galaxy, more about the different species in the galaxy
- The 6 movies are mostly about the story of the Skywalker family. The prequles tell you why, the when and the how, like - why did Anakin turn, how did the Jedis lose, or why did they hide Luke and Leia.
So true Iearned more about the Jedi watching the Clone Wars and Rebels 2 awesome shows Mage should watch
According to George Lucas the blue lightsaber was less noticeable in the blue skies of many scenes, so it was made green for that reason. The mythology of light saber colors was explained later as Victorszakas lets us know above.
In Star wars Rebels, Kanan and Ezra are a special father and son duo
We totally need a meme counter for the prequels
23:19 I love Hans’s expressions in the scene because you can tell he was thinking the same thing
30:08 Caleb has the Joaquín Phoenix “Joker” laugh, and I’m here for it.

"I don't wanna cryyyyy... WELL THATS TOO DAMN BAD!!!" ... I'm dying 🤣🤣🤣
::spoiler alert::
I liked the funeral pyre as I considered it essentially the ascension of Anakin's soul and the final destruction of Darth Vader as Anakin leaves it behind. And looking back on this film after seeing the prequels, it is a nice touch in retrospect that Anakin died saving his family.
Luke was trained by Yoda, not Obie won. Luke never knew his mother, no memory of her at all.
Green symbolizes strength in the force and will use a lightsaber as a last resort.
I love that Solo’s crew on Endor is in all camouflage gear, but they brought along a gleaming gold droid.

Ya know I’ve been watching these movies ever since I can remember, and I have never felt the impact and breadth of emotion of this ending, until I saw it through your eyes. So thank you for that. I imagine your reaction is the one that George Lucas intended for this movie to produce.
YOu are the first one who made me actually cried...watching the end
It's green cuz the color of the saber would blend with the color of the sky at the beginning of the movie, lol
"Fuck this fucking movie!" -Meg 🤣🤣🤣
The part where you said Luke changed his father and how special that was - really hit home. My sons have helped me change for the better and I’ve told them when I’m wrong/they were right. And they both tell me how much that means to them ❤
"Oh my god, you can't just ask people (lightsabers) why they're green."

Your reactions to this trilogy have been wonderful. I even teared up a bit myself in sympathy.

That's true.@@Rocket1377
Obi-Wan taught Luke the high ground 😎
_"I don't understand what Obi-Wan and Yoda wanted"_
You're not far off with your preceding analysis.
"F this f'ing movie"... And we all know that was quite the compliment. Haha!
Oh I didnt know george lucas felt that way during the preproduction
It made more sense for Leia to be his sister anyway
Vader going "no...nooo!" was not in the original movie, it was added later and kinda ruined a perfect moment. Vader looking between Luke and the Emperor, we never knew is internal thought, Anakin turns and fucks the Emperors day up... it was so much better.
Yeah that's rather unfortunate.
Lol. No
I've been a huge fan of SW for years, into the extended universe books, etc. and I think the best way to describe the movies is truly the story of a dysfunctional family
