@@ChilliChump Rather like a simple closed system within a larger reservoir of nutrients within a buried greenhouse storage system? Not a bad name tho, vermiponics: the simple, automated, effective way to manage worm temperature.
I think it would be great to insulate that shed if you can do it cheaply (or free). Then you're covered for summer and winter. I have my worms outside and they took a big hit last winter.
@chilichump I head you say you add Amazon boxes to your worm bins, you might want to double check but lots of Amazon boxes are sprayed with a pesticide so pests don’t get into the packages, my friends dog got a very bad rash around his mouth from shredding old Amazon boxes. Just something to look into 👍👍
I shred my Amazon boxes for work bedding and general composting and have no problems. The issue is the tape and heat labels that are used...those are no bueno. I remove all of those before I shred the boxes.
While they make good vermi-compost, it seem like a hellova faff. I use Bokashi bins and hot compost. The Bokashi allows all waste used and is very easy. I look forward to your comparison.
I started a tower and a container bin last year purely down to seeing what you are doing on your channel. Mine seem to be doing ok, they are outside and I have added the odd freezer block every now and again, that way you can avoid the extra water if its not needed. Every few days I wash them off and put them (with clean hands & gloves) in a ziplock bag and re-freeze them. Can I ask, how much coffee grounds do you think would be too much for a kilo of worms over a week?
For a kilo of worms, I would say around a kilo of used coffee grounds a week will be fine. I let mint sit in a bucket for a couple days before putting them in with the worms, that way they have dried out a bit.
Shaun, I will be honest the worms always give me the "willies". However, for some reason I am magnetized to these videos. This was awesome! Thank you for sharing my friend. v/r Shane
They are so satisfying to use for vermicomposting! Especially when they create little happy worm "balls". The do that when I throw in sweet corn cobs....they love those things!
Lovely to see Shaun - on a side note, I finally ran out of your Nyami and BB sauces this week so it's high time you get some more ready! I've still got a bit of the SoL left but I only use a dash of that at a time lol
My prep kitchen is almost ready my friend! We still have stock of Nyami, and Killer Cajun spice. But will be stocking up on old favourites again soon...as well as some new ones! 🔥
didn't know you kept the vermi. very nice. after being a worm farmer for 8+ yr I have to say there's better manure out there. worms are great to keep waste down.
We've had some crazy frost lately in SA and its killed off everything, one of these days i need to make a dedicated bin for vermicompost since the horse manure is so full of seeds and nonsense
Is there a specific kind of worm that would do best? Every time it rains I have hundreds of night crawlers on my driveway. I used to sell them to fishermen but since I started growing peppers it seems efficient to start some worm bins. I'm pretty new to this so any first hand information would be welcomed. Thanks in advance.
Why not just put venting turbines on top of the roof to vent the shed and you can put an intake on the bottom of the shed and keep cooler outside air in there? Slight easier than trying to use ice cubes!
Venting turbines are cheap. Made of galvanize tin. And you’re very handy. And when not needed, they can either be covered from the outside or blocked from the inside.
Hi Andy, I do. Have a look here: th-cam.com/video/vY39MOh5pPc/w-d-xo.html There are more worm videos in this playlist too: th-cam.com/play/PLuQ_ySnkV1el2rmGJ1kJlXyG3Ln0HvHlr.html
Love the idea, hate the creepy crawlies!! Seeing as you had an aphid infestation on a few plants, have you thought of making your own terrarium to propagate your own ladybird army? I'd love to try it but they're so rare here after the soaking wet spring in UK/IRE.....plus I don't wanna be That guy that the cops are called on cos a 40yr old is running around the blackberry and elderberry bushes in the park shouting GOTCHA when he gets something in his jam jar :-/ Plus I don't know what ladybirds do in winter when there's no greenfly or aphids around.....hibernate/migrate/netflix and chill? Who knows? Not me anyway!
Would love to breed ladybugs! At the new place I am rather lucky though, never seen so many of them. This year's aphid issue is more down to circumstance. My whole season has been challenging to say the least, due to the move and everything else associated with that! Next year should be a different story completely!
Have you started vermicomposting yet? How are your worms doing?
My worms are doing very good. The warmth is very well for them and they are well fed.
Are you feeding only from your kitchen scraps? You must have a good amount of worms by now!
Kitchen scraps and fruits from our trees.
Looking at starting my composting this year :)
My worms are doing horrible right now
have had mine for 3 years, thank god it doesn't get that warm here. Have to put them inside in winter, that's it :)
Thats fortunate!

Now there is an idea! Kind of like aquaponics... Can call it vermiponics 😉

Great video mate. I gave my worm bin to my father but will be making a new one shortly as I miss the castings

Great video & very helpful! Thanks so much!
My pleasure, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I use none, found it's sloppy wet , cold and airless. Maybe compost it somewhere else first, that's what I just started doing.

Any thoughts of making a few airflow vents at the top of the shed?

Red wigglers or European Night Crawlers are ideal. So sounds like you have some good ones there!
Why not just put venting turbines on top of the roof to vent the shed and you can put an intake on the bottom of the shed and keep cooler outside air in there? Slight easier than trying to use ice cubes!
Because I need the shed to be warm for 95% of the rest of the year. Ice is a just an easier and cheaper solution
Venting turbines are cheap. Made of galvanize tin. And you’re very handy. And when not needed, they can either be covered from the outside or blocked from the inside.
How exactly do you use the vermicompost and do you use any other (liquid?) fertilizer?
The vermicompost is mixed in with my soil mix when I pot up my chillies.
Do you have a video on how to start your own vermicompost set-up?

@@ChilliChump excellent, thank you.
your thermometer is awesome, it has a frown face...
What would happen if you put your worms into your big compost bins? Would they grow there or just escape? 😃
They would probably cook! My large compost bins get over 60' celsius!
I haven’t seen any worms in my compost piles either. They get way too hot. 60-65 C is 140+ F. That’s hotter than Death Valley in summertime.
where are you based SA?
UK
