At first I didn't know it was a keyboard inside a piano body, and every time I saw a live performance and them jumping and dancing on it I'm like ..that can not be good for that piano lol.
An added layer is the repeated metaphor in so many TOP songs that Tyler's mind IS the car, seen in Ride, Tear in My Heart, Heavydirtysoul, just to name a few. So the "car radio" represents something to focus on, things to fill the silence, a distraction from the thoughts, and when that is gone the thoughts in his head just keep getting louder and louder until he's just yelling back with them (you can scream in your head and you can scream in your car, and no one will hear it) and then back down to pondering something great and well, at least he's still breathing... I love the play of lyrics, music, and metaphor in TOP songs, and both Tyler and Josh are amazing. Thanks for the vid!
These guys are monsters live too. these acoustic sets are fantastic but all of the stadium live versions are insane as well. Ive seen some great live acts their show holds up.
GIve this one a go in your free time. He is a solo magician!!! Twenty One Pilots' Tyler Joseph strips down their hits in this exclusive Storyteller Performance
I can relate so much to this song. I have an hour long commute to and from work each day. All I do is sit and think. Music has always been my escape, and what helps me decompress/cope. The masks are symbolic -- to be faceless, to escape from having to be ...I guess "typical." Twenty One Pilots are not typical, and the lyrics are always profound. My daughter introduced me to them, and I Love them!
Fun thing to know about Josh Dunn, the drummer. He's self taught, so to hear you talking about his skill is nice to hear. Tyler (the singer/pianist/lyricist/everything else) started the band with two other guys that eventually left. They were good, but when Josh joined with Tyler, some kind of magic sparked and these two are just...amazing. And even more so in liver performances.
you should check out Car radio performance for MTV Unplugged released this week, it was incredible and really different to the original!! Tyler (singer) actually did have his car radio stolen and he found without that distraction of music his mind went to some dark places! The mask kinda seems like it's a way for him to hide what he's feeling from other people.
I came in a bit later as a fan, so the first album I heard was Trench, and then it took awhile to go back through their catalogue. People often say that it's almost like certain songs were written as if they were personalized towards them. This is that song for me. I'd never considered that anyone else would have pull the steering wheel moments
I was afraid to let my son get his license after I heard that. He had been dealing with self harm, anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts, in and out of the hospital for a year trying to get a handle on it. I was so scared to let him drive. It only takes one really bad moment to make that decision and it's done. Terrified me. He's better now. He introduced me to TOP when he was about 15, he's 23 now. If you did have that moment, I'm glad you didn't act on it. "Stay alive, it gets better, I promise." -TJ 😉
@@asdband888 I'm glad you're son is better! I'm bipolar type 2, which is lifelong so when I get to low points that can make it harder to push myself back up to a more positive maintenance state. I surprised my therapist on our last visit when she asked me if I could think of any long term goals, my answer was my current goal is to hang in there until I get to a point where I'm able to start thinking of long term goals. She said I like that answer!
@@asdband888 I kinda get that holding him back could have been so much worse he would have eventually found a way around one way or another or ended it. I was like that once a long time ago my parents gave me freedom instead of restriction and if they had chosen the latter I'm not sure I'd be around today.
Man, having never heard that song before. I love how when the breakdown and melody come in at the end and fill the air, his thoughts (the lyrics) switch to chanting (whooooooooooooahahoo) as opposed to the profound stuff he was saying before. Did that signify him replacing the radio? And then afterwards hes screaming, is that his thoughts still there screaming to get out over the background music he's blocking them with?
You might want to go check out the official music video. It really does add to the song. These guys are very thought provoking if you want to take the time. If not, they make entertaining music on the surface too. Hope you enjoy!
They are masked up because in the time of Regionals at Best and Vessel, they would where a ski mask. It is their look and they’re my favorite band so I know a lot.
Watching them this weekend cant wait ,loved the fact you were enjoying ,especially the bit when you hat tipped the drummer he is so good ,thank glad you enjoyed made me happy
Josh Dunn, the guy on drums, is great at doing what he does. He excels at filling the space between the drawn-out piano notes and is good at replacing the electronic elements removed from the normal version.
I gotta say, I really didn't like that rendition of Car Radio. I'll give it another listen because sometimes it takes awhile for something to grow on me. I liked the Heathens parts though lol
I love watching people react to them because whether it’s your taste in music or not it usually makes the person go “woah” haha I hope you check out more of their stuff!
I think he's afraid of the copyright hit, but there are tons of people who have reacted to this video without any issues. I still get goosebumps every time I watch it
One of the most common suicidal ideations among people with depression is crashing your car. As one such person, I felt so seen when I first heard this song. The music video for it is also very good. Tyler has written a number of songs that engage with mental health issues. He's honest about his own struggles, and he makes good, meaningful music out of it. Guns for Hands is a good one about anxiety.
I felt the same with that line. I had never given it much thought that other people had this as an ideation. Thankfully mine are mostly fleeting, but it's usually the phrase "that light post looks good."
My son was self harming ( and had depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts) and I didn't know it. Guns for Hands hit me hard when I took him to the Emotional Roadshow. A lot of their songs did. I probably cried at least 3 or 4 times from actually HEARING the lyrics or the crowd cohesiveness or the overall vibe of being there in a crowd of people who have probably all been through similar things as me and my son (mine was depression and generally feeling lost). It was all amazing!
@@asdband888 Yep I usually cry at least a few times. I saw them last October, Tyler did Redecorate by himself on B stage. That song might be the most personal one for me, I have a hard time getting rid of stuff, mild hoarding tendencies but not like boxes piled up or anything. But I've thought multiple times...if I go, my family is going to have to deal with this mess. So I was crying a bit during the song, but then he added an outro that made me wish I had brought more tissues. He sang "It'll be ok, I said you're gonna be ok. You've made it this far, oh you've made it this far, I said you're gonna be ok." Yep, teared up on rewatching the video from the show. I'm seeing them at least once this fall, I'll be sure to bring more tissues lol.

I've seen them 4 times thus far, more to go. Nice reaction, Sir, Respect. But may I add, the pic you have up in from "Guns for Hands" not "Car Radio" "Guns for Hands" is how I first discovered Twenty One Pilots.
Addict With a Pen holds a great deal of personal meaning to me. Not so much the actual message of the song, but the relationship I had with my own father. Rather than viewing it as a lapse in faith I connect it to the lack of closure in my love/hate relationship my father and I had.
I sent this to them after annoying my family. Had about a 15 minute session without any music that kept me ok. Basically when I don’t have music I have to deal with this TBI. Although after July 17th, 2023 I’ll make enough money from music to be able to get myself a new house of my own in Milwaukee and one for my family in Texas!
love the content as usual. just felt like commenting this time because of the thumbnail photo you chose of twenty one pilots... I have a sketch of it tattooed on me. 🤣
I LOVE THESE GUYSSS! They wear masks to make themselves stick out in your mind. It's something you don't see often so it stands out more than just their music. Also their albums Blurryface and Trench are continuations of the same story. I recommend checking it out for an interesting story of a man battling his inner demons.
Actually, they wear masks so that it’s not about them, it’s about the music and you should form a relationship with it for yourself. The skeleton outfits are just a lark, IIRC they saw them somewhere, and thus was born “the skeleton clique”.
Oh man, you miss a lot of the meaning of these songs without watching the actual music videos. They are freaking WILD and have so much hidden meaning that will explain things like the masks and such. Huge Twenty One Pilots fan and found your channel from your reactions. Love them!

These guys are so good live; but with them having so much lore.. a LOT is lost without seeing their official videos that tell so much more.
Especially this video, shows how connected he is to his audience and the "fall" at the end....❤
i don’t necessarily agree but with this song, i definitely do.
I'm sorry, but if you need a music video to convey your story, then you have failed as a songwriter. This man hasn't. I disagree very much with this.
Most definitely!!!!!!
sadly true without the video this is just kinda eh
All albums and individual tracks tell a huge story. Incredible live!! “Trees” live in LA is amazing!
Also, this is baby Tyler and Josh.. they've grown soooo much :D The piano standing screaming makes SO much more sense in the official video ;)

YES, but the MuteMath Sessions.
Just to say this is the original one they have a more recent one now love this band

Congrats on the beginning of one of the greatest rabbit holes of a band ever. You can put on anything from them and you will love it!
The whole live from the Fox Theater is great. "Goner" is my absolute favorite. "Trees', and I just love that version of "Ride."
I love how much you complemented Josh (the drummer) he’s absolutely amazing and I’m glad you recognized it :))
