    Still sounds better than the Sub Phatty & Sub 37. Its s shame they went a tad digital with the interface, but this synth has an excellent tone to it.

    Awesome, I can think of many instruments and other applications for this. It seems to be unlimited. Definitely for the Sonic Artist or the highly creative person. Go Moog!

    With this, the monster will be complete! '59 Hammond B3 in a '36 A body (baby b) with removable original legs. Restored mechanically with 2 channel midi added to lower manual. Now the Slim phatty will be added along with mac mini running pianoteq and all played on the amazing restored hammond action! All of this in one "convenient" package. I cant freakin wait to get this project done!!

    White noise is very useful, you use it for percussion sounds when you don't want them to have their own fundamental as well as adding a little white noise to add a bit of high end sizzle to waveforms. It sounds great in small amounts here to make the waveform buzzier, phatter or a bit vintage sounding. It's because of its frequency content.

    Most wind and breath-sounding patches typically use a noise generator, it's useful for certain ambient effects (like waves crashing on a beach, perhaps).

  • @Hlecktro
    @Hlecktro 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Also the software costs 75 dollars, and it's a little janky. Turning knobs quickly lags out on my computer with the VST, and you have what seems like higher resolution control on the actual physical knobs. It can be nice for designing patches just, generally though, for example if you are wanting to sit down and make a small sound bank for yourself.

  • @MrEvanbooker
    @MrEvanbooker 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @sonicstate I noticed that quite a few times when switching parameters you had to turn the knob all the way back to where it was to affect a change. Is it anymore responsive now with new OS upgrades?

    is this synth fully sequenceable in a DAW via USB like the Minitaur, for sequencing notes and filter from a computer. Does it bring a software like the minitaur ??? great review

    no white noise as an oscillator source? I m sorry I just don t get why this is important.why would I want an oscillator to look like a white noise? we usually use saw, square.. etc as oscilator source since it is very dinstinctive.. a white noise would like crush everything instantly wouldn t it?
    Or did you mean the is no modulation possible on the white noise?
    Love your reviews you re the best really. I m probably just lost here I just didn t understand what you meant..

  • @sonicstate
    @sonicstate  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @MrEvanbooker You can set it to be several modes, I forget what they call them, I no longer have the unit here. But one is where you have to ravel through the programmed value to pick up any changes (which was what you saw there) there is another which just starts wherever the knob is and starts working and I think one other mode.

    it depends on what are you suggesting
    If you want to use your guitar as sound controller(MIDI) for this moog slim phatty then yes:
    but you might need another gear(something like sonuus G2M,google it)to transcode your guitar into MIDI signal before further connecting into this slim phatty

    I have a question though. I have 600 pounds for a synth. do you think it is better to buy a tetra or a nord lead rack (specially because they are polyphonic which is a feature I would love to see in moog products) or is it still better to you to buy a Slim Phatty because of its unique great analogu sound and filter..

  • @BarryWarne
    @BarryWarne 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can also link these. Meaning for a reasonable cost you can make a two-voice, four-voice .... eight-voice synthesizer. 8-voice Moog for ...say $8k ... not really that bad. Maybe Moog / Retailers will come out with a special 'bulk buy' purchase plan. Saving me pennies .... to me the Phatty line is the new Minimoog. The Voyager is closer to the IIIC series.

  • @jmb102093
    @jmb102093 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    sometimes when you use it in small amounts it can give a sound a little bit of grit. Its kind of like using a sub oscillator to beef up a sound white noise can add a little bit of a gritty sparkle to it. At least that's what i use it for. good question though

  • @Hlecktro
    @Hlecktro 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I bought my slim, I thought I was going to be using it to be sequenced through my DAW. It does that... definitely. But trust me, you want to be using this in a more live capacity. Tuning is annoying but, just like you would tune your guitar, it's not too hard to get used to tuning it a bit manually by ear.

    @myownservant That Arp that sells for 2k is 30 years old. A brand new one, made with the same parts, would not cost $2000.
    Oberheim just made a comeback... and they're selling their SEM for the same price as 30 years ago. Still using the same components.
    What's your opinion of the Andromeda and Prophet 08? How do they compare to the old polysynths?
    There are plenty of 100% analog products today, competatively priced and made by big companies and small ones.

  • @AlainHubert
    @AlainHubert 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Unfortunately, the filter on this thing has nothing to do with the real Moog filter found on the Voyager or the original Minimoog. It has a very different character to it. That's not a bad thing. It's just not the typical Moog 24 db/oct ladder filter behavior. This one is much more aggressive and distorts quite easily, even without the "feedback to filter" trick. If you absolutely want that Moog filter done right, than go for a Voyager or any old Moog synths. If not, then this is ok, I guess.

  • @ttoxique
    @ttoxique 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've only really needed noise sources for noise sweeps specifically, or to add some breathe to a supersaw-esque sound- which the Slim Phatty isn't going to generate anyways with two oscillators.
    I guess it could be useful for percussive elements, but the Phatty seems to already have that with it's melodic waves used creatively.
    But hey, more features would always be nice.

    I think the first pronunciation of 'Moog' that you used is correct! Two letter Os and then a consonant are never pronounced non-phonetically, I'm sure. If it were pronounced the second way, it would be spelled 'Mogue' or Mouge' or Mowg' to rhyme with 'rogue'.

    ohh all right I thought you were saying 'sound source' as a sound source that would modulate a destination. like a since wave source would change the destination pitch of a sound. I thought how can a white noise be usefull to modulate a pitch for example.
    But you meant sound source as basically 'A Sound'. You mean that there is actually no White noise Sound available in the module. Oh yes as you say.. that is a big omission

    ...cutoff and resonance on the same pot? ouch....
    I was about to go off, but just did some research after writing that first line and see the phattys have a "pot mapping" feature, enabling assignment to anything. I still think having a dedicated resonance would be WAY more handy, letting you leave the rest of the pots to their respective functions, but it'll do in a pinch I guess. Without that feature I would have immediately dismissed the phattys.

    God knows we'd all love a Moog synth, but given the philistines out there who would not know a real Moog sound from VST moog. What's the point in spending all that money? Maybe I'm wrong but only us older guys/gals get why they are great. Many good VSTs have infinitely more choice of sounds, especially for the modern tastes in productions. I know many of you want me burned at the stake, but honestly, are there enough fresh sounds to cater for the sonically hungry masses? (raise shields!)

    The Andromeda, when released, was criticized for not being 'analog' enough, but when it got discontinued prices went up 50% and now people are sad about it's passing. There's this 'what have you done for me' lately attitude, and frankly it annoys me.
